Aspartate aminotransferase and carbohydrate metabolism of rat brain

1969

Effects of streptozotocin and dietary fructose on delta-6 desaturation in spontaneously hypertensive rat liver.

2004

We have investigated the effects of hypertension associated with diabetes mellitus on polyunsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis. For this purpose, two rat models for these pathologies have been established: a type 1 diabetic hypertensive model obtained by streptozotocin injection to spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR), followed or not by insulin treatment (experiment 1); a type 2 diabetic hypertensive model by feeding SHR with a fructose enriched diet (experiment 2). Liver gene expression of delta-6 desaturase (D6D), microsomal D6D activities and fatty acid composition of total lipids were estimated. In experiment 1, an increase of linoleic acid (18:2 n-6) level was observed in the streptozo…

Low vitamin K1 intake in haemodialysis patients

2017

Background & aims Vitamin K acts as a coenzyme in the γ-carboxylation of vitamin K-dependent proteins, including coagulation factors, osteocalcin, matrix Gla protein (MGP), and the growth arrest-specific 6 (GAS6) protein. Osteocalcin is a key factor for bone matrix formation. MGP is a local inhibitor of soft tissue calcification. GAS6 activity prevents the apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells. Few data on vitamin K intake in chronic kidney disease patients and no data in patients on a Mediterranean diet are available. In the present study, we evaluate the dietary intake of vitamin K1 in a cohort of patients undergoing haemodialysis. Methods In this multi-centre controlled observati…

In vivo versus augmented reality exposure in the treatment of small animal phobia: A randomized controlled trial

2016

Although in vivo exposure is the treatment of choice for specific phobias, some acceptability problems have been associated with it. Virtual Reality exposure has been shown to be as effective as in vivo exposure, and it is widely accepted for the treatment of specific phobias, but only preliminary data are available in the literature about the efficacy of Augmented Reality. The purpose of the present study was to examine the efficacy and acceptance of two treatment conditions for specific phobias in which the exposure component was applied in different ways: In vivo exposure (N = 31) versus an Augmented Reality system (N = 32) in a randomized controlled trial. “One-session treatment” guidel…

Nitrate, sulphate and chloride contents in public drinking water supplies in Sicily, Italy.

2012

Water samples collected from public drinking water supplies in Sicily were analysed for electric conductivity and for their chloride, sulphate and nitrate contents. The samples were collected as uniformly as possible from throughout the Sicilian territory, with an average sampling density of about one sample for every 7,600 inhabitants. Chloride contents that ranged from 5.53 to 1,302 mg/l were correlated strongly with electric conductivity, a parameter used as a proxy for water salinity. The highest values are attributable to seawater contamination along the coasts of the island. High chloride and sulphate values attributable to evaporitic rock dissolution were found in the central part of…

Marine molecular biology : An emerging field of biological sciences

2007

An appreciation of the potential applications of molecular biology is of growing importance in many areas of life sciences, including marine biology. During the past two decades, the development of sophisticated molecular technologies and instruments for biomedical research has resulted in significant advances in the biological sciences. However, the value of molecular techniques for addressing problems in marine biology has only recently begun to be cherished. It has been proven that the exploitation of molecular biological techniques will allow difficult research questions about marine organisms and ocean processes to be addressed. Marine molecular biology is a discipline, which strives t…

PRICE CONVERGENCE IN THE EUROPEAN CAR MARKET

2008

International audience; This paper examines price convergence in the European Union car market over the period 1995-2005. We find that there is a clear evidence of price convergence among the EU15 countries, but not before 1999. Moreover, countries of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) started convergence previously to the EU15 as a whole. Finally, exchange rate changes have significantly contributed to price dispersion over time across countries. The results provide significant evidence that trade liberalization and the EMU have enhanced the process of regional integration in the European automobile industry, even though there is room for further measures to promote integration.

Effects of Masking on Open-Circuit Voltage and Fill Factor in Solar Cells

2019

Guidelines for the correct measurement protocol of novel photovoltaic technologies such as perovskites are becoming more frequent in literature. This because, as will be confirmed in this perspective, it is not straightforward to correctly measure the efficiency parameters of these and many other novel solar cells. This is particularly the case for small area research devices which are prone to overestimate the short circuit current density, due to edge effects of various types. To reduce the inaccuracy of current density determination, the common recommended practice is to utilize masks with well‐defined apertures, often smaller than the device active area. Herein we show both experimental…

Enhanced thermoelectric properties of lightly Nb doped SrTiO3 thin films

2021

Novel thermoelectric materials developed for operation at room temperature must have similar or better performance along with being as ecofriendly as those commercially used, e.g., BiTe, in terms of their toxicity and cost. In this work, we present an in-depth study of the thermoelectric properties of epitaxial Nb-doped strontium titanate (SrTiNbO) thin films as a function of (i) doping concentration, (ii) film thickness and (iii) substrate type. The excellent crystal quality was confirmed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The thermoelectric properties were measured by the three-omega method (thermal conductivity) and van der Pauw method (el…
