Computational Experiments with the Roots of Fibonacci-like Polynomials as a Window to Mathematics Research
2022
Fibonacci-like polynomials, the roots of which are responsible for a cyclic behavior of orbits of a second-order two-parametric difference equation, are considered. Using Maple and Wolfram Alpha, the location of the largest and the smallest roots responsible for the cycles of period p among the roots responsible for the cycles of periods 2kp (period-doubling) and kp (period-multiplying) has been determined. These purely computational results of experimental mathematics, made possible by the use of modern digital tools, can be used as a motivation for confirmation through not-yet-developed methods of formal mathematics. peerReviewed
Diagenesis of speleothems and its effect on the accuracy of 230 Th/U-ages
2014
Abstract Speleothems can be precisely dated by U-series disequilibrium methods. One basic assumption of the 230Th/U-dating method is that the system remains closed and U and Th isotopes are neither lost nor added after deposition. For stalagmites, this requirement is usually fulfilled due to their protected environment in caves. However, undersaturated drip water may lead to diagenesis of speleothem CaCO3 and altered 230Th/U-ages. Here we present a detailed petrographic investigation using thin sections and 230Th/U-ages of a stalagmite from the Riesenberghohle, northern Germany, which grew during Marine Isotope Stages 5e, c and a. The occurrence of a mosaic fabric in large parts of the stal…
The growth of Finnish software companies in 2008-2011 : empirical investigation of financial ratios as the determinants of growth
2014
The purpose of this study is to examine the relation of growth and the financial ratios of a company. The theoretical portion of the study focuses on the concept of growth in entrepreneurship theory. The empirical portion consists of examination of the financial ratios of 162 Finnish software companies in 2008-2011 by means of quantitative analysis methods. Statistical analysis methods, including analysis of variance, correlation and regression analysis, are used in the analysis. The objective of the study is to reveal how growth affects the financial ratios of a company and which ratios can be used to predict growth. The effects of companies’ age, geographical location and industrial class…
3He/4He Ratio in Olivines from Linosa, Ustica, and Pantelleria Islands (Southern Italy)
2011
We report helium isotope data for 0.03–1Ma olivine-bearing basaltic hawaiites from three volcanoes of the southern Italy magmatic province (Ustica, Pantelleria, and Linosa Islands). Homogenous 3He/4He ratios (range: 7.3–7.6 Ra) for the three islands, and their similarity with the ratio of modern volcanic gases on Pantelleria, indicate a common magmatic end-member. In particular, Ustica (7.6 ± 0.2Ra) clearly differs from the nearby Aeolian Islands Arc volcanism, despite its location on the Tyrrhenian side of the plate boundary. Although limited in size, our data set complements the large existing database for helium isotope in southern Italy and adds further constraints upon the spatial exte…
Real estate surfaces appraisal
2014
In the appraisal of the market value of the properties are applied two important surface indexes: the market surface ratio of the secondary surfaces and the ratio of the site value to total value (allocation method). The measure of both these indexes can be revealed difficult: the data collection of the surface trade ratio in the market can get different results and in practice often the valuer refolds on the fixed coefficients brought in the handbooks and in the circulars of the public administration; the appraisal of the ratio of the site, especially in the central zones and for ancient buildings, where besides the incidence is higher, is developed extrapolating the ratios from the periph…
Lead isotopes in biological matrices to identify potential sources of contamination: the case study of Sulcis-Iglesiente district (SW Sardinia, Italy)
2017
The Sulcis-Iglesiente district has been, until recently, one of the most important Italian polymetallic mining areas for the extraction of lead. Located close to the town of Iglesias, the San Giorgio area constitutes a dramatic example of an area affected by intense mine pollution. Epidemiological studies regarding the mining areas of Sardinia have indicated the Sulcis-Iglesiente as a typical example of how dispersion of metal can affect human health. We have chosen this peculiar area to evaluate whether a supposed prolonged and continuous exposure to high lead concentration can be detected by means of a bio-monitoring procedure that uses the analysis of human scalp hair and the measurement…
The impact of financial crises on co-movements between commodity futures and equity prices : evidence from crude oil and gold markets
2017
Omaisuusluokkien välisillä korrelaatioilla on tärkeä rooli sijoitussalkun hajautusta ajatellen. Omaisuuslajien suojauksen kannalta erityisen tärkeää on tutkia, miten eri omaisuusluokat korreloivat kriisiperiodien aikana.
Global validation of the WSES Sepsis Severity Score for patients with complicated intra-abdominal infections : a prospective multicentre study (WISS …
2015
BACKGROUND: To validate a new practical Sepsis Severity Score for patients with complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAIs) including the clinical conditions at the admission (severe sepsis/septic shock), the origin of the cIAIs, the delay in source control, the setting of acquisition and any risk factors such as age and immunosuppression. ----- METHODS: The WISS study (WSES cIAIs Score Study) is a multicenter observational study underwent in 132 medical institutions worldwide during a four-month study period (October 2014-February 2015). Four thousand five hundred thirty-three patients with a mean age of 51.2 years (range 18-99) were enrolled in the WISS study. ----- RESULTS: Univariate…
Comparison of conventional hamstring/quadriceps ratio between genders in level-matched soccer players
2017
Abstract Objectives The main goal of our study is to compare the hamstring/quadriceps ( H / Q ) ratio at different knee angles between level-matched male and female soccer players and to determine whether differences in the H / Q ratio exist between the dominant and the non-dominant leg. Methods A cross-sectional study design was used to compare an isometric H / Q ratio and functional isokinetic ratio (between hamstring in eccentric contraction and quadriceps in concentric contraction) between males ( n = 14) and females ( n = 14). These ratios were studied at two different speeds of movement (60° s −1 and 180° s −1 ) and in five different positions (40°, 50°, 60°, 70° and 80° degrees of …
Hypovitaminosis D and orthostatic hypotension: A systematic review and meta-analysis
2016
Objectives: Orthostatic hypotension is a common condition among older adults and is associated with a range of deleterious outcomes. Recently, interest has developed in hypovitaminosis D (defined as low 25 hydroxiyVitamin D levels) as a potential risk factor for orthostatic hypotension. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis examining the association of orthostatic hypotension between study participants with and without hypovitaminosis D, including the adjustment of potential confounders (age, sex, BMI, renal function, comorbidities, seasonality, use of antihypertensive medications, and supplementation with cholecalciferol). Methods: A systematic literature search of major elect…
