Treatment of psoriasis with the chimeric monoclonal antibody against tumor necrosis factor alpha, infliximab.
2002
Abstract Background: Psoriatic skin lesions in patients with Crohn's disease or psoriatic arthritis have shown improvement during infliximab treatment. Objective: The purpose of our study was to systematically assess the effects of infliximab in patients with psoriatic skin lesions. Methods: Eight patients with severe psoriasis were enrolled in an open-label clinical trial. Patients received infliximab, 5 mg/kg, intravenously at weeks 0, 2, and 6. The Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) was used to monitor disease activity at weeks 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 14. Week 10 was the end point of the treatment phase; week 14 was the follow-up end point. Pruritus was assessed on a scale of 0 to 3…
Immunosuppressive treatment of rippling muscles in patients with myasthenia gravis
2000
Rippling muscle disease is a rare autosomal dominant disorder that may occur sporadically. In this report two patients presenting with rippling muscles followed by myasthenia gravis are described. Our first patient developed rippling muscles about 1 month after infection with Yersinia enterocolitica. Two years later myasthenia gravis appeared. Our second patient had a 2-year history of asthma prior to the onset of rippling muscles which preceded the myasthenic symptoms by 4-8 weeks. Acetylcholine receptor and anti-skeletal muscle antibody titers were positive in both patients. In both patients the rippling phenomena worsened with pyridostigmine treatment but markedly improved after immunosu…
Intravascular ultrasound detected classification of coronary lesions as a predictor of dissections after balloon angioplasty.
1996
Dissection after balloon angioplasty of coronary arteries may give rise to an unfavourable early outcome. Compared with coronary angiography, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) allows more detailed characterisation of dissections. We investigated the incidence and type of dissections after balloon angioplasty in calcified coronary lesions. IVUS was performed in 43 patients with 48 lesions before and after percutaneous balloon angioplasty. Significant calcification was defined as an arc of more than 90 degrees with typical acoustic shadowing. Dissections were classified as type A when the media was not involved by the dissection and as type B when media involvement had occurred. In the group wi…
[Treatment of sensorineural hearing loss in acute viral otitis media with intratympanic dexamethasone and hyaluronic acid in comparison with intraven…
2006
Background: Intratympanic dexamethasone with hyaluronic acid has shown to be an effective treatment of the inner ear damage in sudden hearing loss and Meniere's disease. It is not known yet if the same applies to the toxic inner ear damage in acute viral otitis media. Patients: Retrospectively, 26 patients who suffered from acute viral otitis media with sensorineural hearing loss were examined with regard to the improvement of their inner ear hearing loss. Twelve patients were treated with intravenous therapy only, consisting of hydroxyethylstarch, pentoxifylline and prednisolone. Fourteen patients additionally received intratympanic injections, consisting of dexamethasone and hyaluronic ac…
5-Fluorouracil and folinic acid with or without CPT-11 in advanced colorectal cancer patients: A multicenter randomised phase II study of the Souther…
2000
The combination regimen CPT-11 plus bolus and infusion 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) with high-dose leucovorin (hybrid regimen LV5FU2) has been tested for activity and toxicity against advanced colorectal carcinoma in a randomised, multicenter phase II trial.A total of 102 chemotherapy-naïve patients were randomised in a 1:2 fashion to receive: leucovorin 100 mg/m2 administered as a two-hour infusion before 5-FU 400 mg/m2 as an intravenous bolus, and FU 600 mg/m2 as a 22-hour infusion immediately after 5-FU bolus injection repeated on days 1 and 2 (LV5FU2 regimen, arm A, 34 patients) or CPT-11 at 180 mg/m2 (150 mg/m2 for patients of ageor = 70 and75 years) only on day 1 immediately before LV5FU2 th…
Phase II study of continuous-infusion high-dose ifosfamide in advanced and/or metastatic pretreated soft tissue sarcomas.
1998
Summary Background Ifosfamide has important activity in pretreated soft tissue sarcomas (STS), and recent data support a clinically significant dose-response relationship for this agent. Administration by continuous infusion and hematopoietic support have rendered dose intensification regimens possible by reducing both hematologic and non-hematologic toxicities. The optimal dose and schedule of ifosfamide when given at high doses remain to be defined. In a previous phase I study, we demonstrated the feasibility of a continuous infusion (c.i.) high-dose ifosfamide (HDI) regimen in the ambulatory setting for patients with advanced solid tumors. The objective of the present phase II study was …
Outcome of orbital decompression for disfiguring proptosis in patients with Graves' orbitopathy using various surgical procedures
2009
Aim: To compare the outcome of various surgical approaches of orbital decompression in patients with Graves' orbitopathy (GO) receiving surgery for disfiguring proptosis.Method: Data forms and questionnaires from consecutive, euthyroid patients with inactive GO who had undergone orbital decompression for disfiguring proptosis in 11 European centres were analysed. Results: Eighteen different (combinations of) approaches were used, the swinging eyelid approach being the most popular followed by the coronal and transconjunctival approaches. The average proptosis reduction for all decompressions was 5.0 (SD 2.1) mm. After three-wall decompression the proptosis reduction was significantly greater…
Development of a Food-Based Diet Quality Score from a Short FFQ and Associations with Obesity Measures, Eating Styles and Nutrient Intakes in Finnish…
2019
We constructed a food-based diet quality score (DQS) and examined its association with obesity measures, eating styles and nutrient intakes. Participants were 3592 individuals (764 dizygotic [DZ] and 430 monozygotic [MZ] twin pairs) from the FinnTwin16 study. The DQS (0&ndash
Spectral transmission of the pig lens: Effect of ultraviolet A+B radiation
2014
Summary Objective To determine the spectral transmission curve of the crystalline lens of the pig. To analyse how this curve changes when the crystalline lens is irradiated with ultraviolet A + B radiation similar to that of the sun. To compare these results with literature data from the human crystalline lens. Procedures We used crystalline lenses of the common pig from a slaughterhouse, i.e. genetically similar pigs, fed with the same diet, and slaughtered at six months old. Spectral transmission was measured with a Perkin-Elmer Lambda 35 UV/VIS spectrometer. The lenses were irradiated using an Asahi Spectra Lax-C100 ultraviolet source, which made it possible to select the spectral emissi…
Metoclopramide and diphenhydramine in the treatment of hyperemesis gravidarum: effectiveness and predictors of rehospitalisation.
2007
Abstract Objectives Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is the second most common reason for hospitalisation during pregnancy. Since 2002, a new HG treatment protocol consisting of metoclopramide plus diphenhydramine was put in place at CHU Sainte-Justine, affiliated to University of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of this new HG protocol regarding length of hospitalisation for HG, rate of rehospitalisation, evolution of nausea and vomiting symptoms, and rate of adverse events. Study design A retrospective cohort study was conducted from 2002 to 2006 on the population of pregnant women diagnosed with HG, and treated at CHU Sainte-Justine wit…
