The effect of β-mercaptoethanol on lactate dehydrogenase from rat brain

1963

Abstract Catalytic studies on lactate dehydrogenase from rat brain in the presence of β-mercaptoethanol have been performed. It has been found that pyruvate reduction and lactate dehydrogenation were differently affected by the addition of the sulfhydryl compound to the reaction mixture. The effect of β-mercaptoethanol on the catalyzed reaction has been shown to be dependent on the hydrogen ion concentration. When lactate dehydrogenation is measured, β-mercaptoethanol causes a net enhancement of the reaction rate at the more acidic pH values.

Erythrocyte agglutinins in the blood of certain Ascidians

1975

Plasma from Ciona intestinalis, Phallusia mamillata and Ascidia malaca possess hemagglutinin for a variety of erythrocytes. Results obtained by physical and chemical treatments suggest that hemagglutinin for Phallusia mamillata and Ascidia malaca may be a protein or a protein-like substance.

Non-neuronal acetylcholine, a locally acting molecule, widely distributed in biological systems: expression and function in humans.

1998

Acetylcholine acts as a neurotransmitter in the central and peripheral nervous systems in humans. However, recent experiments demonstrate a widespread expression of the cholinergic system in non-neuronal cells in humans. The synthesizing enzyme choline acetyltransferase, the signalling molecule acetylcholine, and the respective receptors (nicotinic or muscarinic) are expressed in epithelial cells (human airways, alimentary tract, epidermis). Acetylcholine is also found in mesothelial, endothelial, glial, and circulating blood cells (platelets, mononuclear cells), as well as in alveolar macrophages. The existence of non-neuronal acetylcholine explains the widespread expression of muscarinic …

Long-term effects of lercanidipine on the lipoprotein and apolipoprotein profile of patients with mild-to-moderate essential hypertension

1999

Abstract The goal of this multicenter, randomized, double-masked, parallel- group study was to assess the effects of lercanidipine versus those of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) on the lipoprotein and apolipoprotein profile of patients with mild-to-moderate essential hypertension. After a 2-week washout period, 52 patients (age range, 18 to 70 years) were randomly allocated to receive lercanidipine 10 mg (n = 26) or HCTZ 12.5 mg (n = 26) once a day for 24 weeks. In nonresponding patients, the dose was increased to 20 or 30 mg of lercanidipine once a day and to 25 or 37.5 mg of HCTZ once a day, after 4 and 8 weeks, respectively. To assess long-term effects, patients receiving lercanidipine enter…

Serotonin transporter gene polymorphism (5-HTTLPR) and emotional response to auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia

2005

The serotonin transporter (5-HTT) has a crucial function in the regulation of serotonin (5-HT) reuptake in presynaptic neurons. 5-HT is a major modulator of emotional behaviour and circadian rhythms. In addition to its neurotransmitter role, it is also an important regulator of morphogenetic activities during early brain development as well as during adult neurogenesis and plasticity (Murphy et al., 2001).

Polymorphic and regular localized activity structures in a two-dimensional two-component reaction–diffusion lattice with complex threshold excitation

2010

Abstract Space–time dynamics of the system modeling collective behaviour of electrically coupled nonlinear units is investigated. The dynamics of a local cell is described by the FitzHugh–Nagumo system with complex threshold excitation. It is shown that such a system supports formation of two distinct kinds of stable two-dimensional spatially localized moving structures without any external stabilizing actions. These are regular and polymorphic structures. The regular structures preserve their shape and velocity under propagation while the shape and velocity as well as other integral characteristics of polymorphic structures show rather complex temporal behaviour. Both kinds of structures r…

In situ XAFS study of phase transitions and hydrogen intercalation in WO3-MoO3 system

1995

Abstract The WO 3 -MoO 3 system has several reconstructive and displacive phase transitions which can be induced by temperature and/or by change of stoichiometry or valence state of metal ions under hydrogen intercalation. We have studied in situ the local electronic and structural changes arising in WO 3 -MoO 3 system with hydrogen intercalation and temperature. In situ XAFS measurements at the Mo K and W L 3 edges in H y Mo x W 1− x O 3 compounds, performed at different hydrogen intercalation level and temperatures (from RT to 500°C), allowed us to determine the rearrangement in the first and second coordination shells of Mo and W cations during phase transitions. It was found that hydrog…

Tradition and rewrite: "El maestro de danzar", from Lope to Calderón

2018

DNA-binding and in vitro cytotoxic activity of platinum(II) complexes of curcumin and caffeine

2019

Abstract Three Pt(II) complexes containing the natural ligands curcumin and caffeine, namely [Pt(curc)(PPh3)2]Cl (1), [PtCl(curc)(DMSO)] (2) (curc = deprotonated curcumin) and trans-[Pt(caffeine)Cl2(DMSO)] (3), were synthesized and fully characterized. The data obtained suggest that, for both 1 and 2, the anion of curcumin is coordinated to the platinum ion via the oxygen atoms of the β-diketonate moiety. Spectroscopic features reveal that in 2 and 3, a DMSO molecule is S-bonded to the metal centre. For 3, all data indicate a square-planar geometry formed by a 9-N bonded caffeine, two trans chloride anions and a DMSO. The three complexes undergo changes in solution upon incubation for 24 h;…
