12 dicembre 1942. Bombe su Solunto. Storia di un fatto dimenticato

2022

This contribution presents the traces on the ground and the archive documentation of a bombardment that took place in Solunto the night of 12 December 1942. The starting point of this research was a photograph preserved in the archives of the Regional Archaeological Museum Antonio Salinas which documents the restoration of a Solunto cistern following the bombing of the Allies. The site, in fact, was hit by a bomb which caused damage to the large masonry cistern placed near the Casa delle Maschere, at the highest point of the site. Archive research has allowed us to reconstruct the dynamics of the facts and revealed the commitment of the Superintendents to the Antiquities of Western Sicily, …

Sickness Absence at Work and Supporting Being Present At Work, Among Employees Working Different Shifts in the Forest Industry

2015

Objective: Shift work has negative effects on employee overall health, including sleep disorder, depressive symptoms, and cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The association between shift work and the prevalence of sickness absence has been less studied. This study investigated sickness absence among employees working different work shift schedules in the forest industry. Method: This descriptive cross-sectional study used employee (N=636) data from forest industry sick-leave registers. The study population (n=280; women n=90 and men=189) worked five different shifts. Each of the five shifts was analyzed separately for sickness absence rate and the results were compared using independent…

Identification and characterization of onchoastacin, an astacin-like metalloproteinase from the filaria Onchocerca volvulus

2007

Abstract The tissue-invasive nematode Onchocerca volvulus causes skin and eye pathology in human onchocerciasis. While the adult females reside sessile in subcutaneous nodules, the microfilariae are abundantly released from the nodules, males and juvenile worms migrate through the host tissue. Matrix-degrading metallo- and serine proteinases have been detected in excretory-secretory worm products that may be essential for migration of the mobile stages. In this study, a 1713 bp long cDNA encoding for a putative proteinase of O. volvulus has been isolated. The predicted protein sequence includes a signal peptide indicating secretion to the extracellular space, a propeptide, an astacin-like p…

A Simple Entropic-Driving Separation Procedure of Low-Size Silver Clusters, Through Interaction with DNA

2021

Abstract Synthesis and purification of metal clusters without strong binding agents by wet chemical methods are very attractive for their potential applications in many research areas. However, especially challenging is the separation of uncharged clusters with only a few number of atoms, which renders the usual techniques very difficult to apply. Herein, we report the first efficient separation of Ag2 and Ag3 clusters using the different entropic driving forces when such clusters interact with DNA, into which Ag3 selectively intercalates. After sequential dialysis of the samples and denaturalizing the DNA‐Ag3 complex, pure Ag2 can be found in the dialysate after extensive dialysis. Free Ag…

Ag2 and Ag3 clusters: synthesis, characterization, and interaction with DNA.

2015

Subnanometric samples, containing exclusively Ag2 and Ag3 clusters, were synthesized for the first time by kinetic control using an electrochemical technique without the use of surfactants or capping agents. By combination of thermodynamic and kinetic measurements and theoretical calculations, we show herein that Ag3 clusters interact with DNA through intercalation, inducing significant structural distortion to the DNA. The lifetime of Ag3 clusters in the intercalated position is two to three orders of magnitude longer than for classical organic intercalators, such as ethidium bromide or proflavine. Bentonites with grafted aminogroups: Synthesis, protolytic properties and assessing Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) adsorption capacity

2019

Abstract Bentonites with grafted methylaminopropyl (NHCH3-Bent), aminopropyl (NH2-Bent), ethylenediaminopropyl (En-Bent) and diethylenetriaminopropyl (Dien-Bent) groups were synthesized by silylation procedure. The successful covalent grafting of silylating agents on the bentonite was confirmed by 29Si NMR, FTIR and thermal analysis. The effects of polar (ethanol) and non-polar (dioxane) solvents on grafting process were compared. The samples prepared in ethanol showed the increase of d001 value from initial 1.44 nm to 1.63–2.05 nm proportionally to the loading amount of grafted silane. However, an almost constant value of d001 (1.96–2.10 nm) was observed for all samples obtained in dioxane…

A proof of bistability for the dual futile cycle

2014

Abstract The multiple futile cycle is an important building block in networks of chemical reactions arising in molecular biology. A typical process which it describes is the addition of n phosphate groups to a protein. It can be modelled by a system of ordinary differential equations depending on parameters. The special case n = 2 is called the dual futile cycle. The main result of this paper is a proof that there are parameter values for which the system of ODE describing the dual futile cycle has two distinct stable stationary solutions. The proof is based on bifurcation theory and geometric singular perturbation theory. An important entity built of three coupled multiple futile cycles is…

OPENSIRACUSA.

XI-X cal BC.
