De la literatura anglesa a la catalana : un canvi de circuit lector en el relat per a adolescents
2013
The article analyses the links between the stories written for teens in an English culture and their translation into Catalan. Our starting point is the analysis of three key stories in the history of reading, and we complete this analysis with the investigation of circuit readers in Catalan that deal with translations of the accounts. The main aim of this research is to analyse how do they adapt to a new and different society, what is the context where they operate and what changes do they produce into the target culture. The conclu- sions show to what extend these translated stories represent a model of liter - ary communication once they enter the Catalan circuit readers and how do they …
Tadeusz Różewicz po niemiecku. Świadectwa lektury
2019
The title of the study covers both instances of Tadeusz Różewicz’s literary output, which are present within the circle of the German language (the art of translation) and the forms of the presences of the German literature and culture in the author’s own texts, metatexts, self-commentaries. Still, the poet’s dialogical word, as contextual and inter-textual networking (“knots in the net”) which creates an open space for the literary-cultural discourses (the following are present here, among others: Goethe, Holderlin, Celan, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Heidegger), becomes a superior value that permeates the character of the “textual world” active here. At the same time, a look at translation as…
From Street into the World: Towards a Politicised Reading of Celebrity Humanitarianism
2011
Since John Street's article on celebrity politics in 2004, the integral role of celebrities in contemporary humanitarian politics has been increasingly acknowledged in the study of international relations. However, as argued in this article, this research has been limited to analysing appearances rather than examining the aesthetics of celebrity representations and their ‘thought worlds’ that contribute also to the structures, relations and processes of world politics. This article addresses this dearth of critical attention and proposes an approach to engage with celebrity humanitarian imaginaries politically by turning to critical humanitarianism and cultural and post-colonial studies. It…
ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profile: Polycipiviridae
2019
Polycipiviridae is a family of picorna-like viruses with non-segmented, linear, positive-sense RNA genomes of approximately 10–12 kb. Unusually for viruses within the order Picornavirales, their genomes are polycistronic, with four (or more) consecutive 5′-proximal open reading frames (ORFs) encoding structural (and possibly other) proteins and a long 3′ ORF encoding the replication polyprotein. Members of species within the family have all been detected in ants or via arthropod transcriptomic datasets. This is a summary of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) Report on the Polycipiviridae, which is available at www.ictv.global/report/polycipiviridae.
Performance evaluation of non volatile memories with a low cost and portable automatic test equipment
2017
This paper presents a versatile and portable test equipment, called portable ATE for research and development of non-volatile memories functionalities. The system is based on STM32-NUCLEO assembled with a custom designed daughter board, in order to host non-volatile memories test-chips, to manage the needed power supplies and generate suitable signals stimuli for correct operations. The system is controlled and programmed by a personal computer, via USB interface. In particular the system can perform: memory reading, writing and erasing, with settings flexibility on time and voltage levels; Electrical Stress Tests (Drain, Gate and Bulk Stress); Cycling Tests; debugging algorithms (erase or …
Effects of the Portuguese Graphogame on reading, spelling, and phonological awareness in second graders struggling to read
2020
The interest in computer-assisted interventions to promote literacy has increased over the years. In this study, we developed the Portuguese version of the GraphoGame Fluent and tested its effects on reading, spelling, and phonological awareness. Second graders struggling to read were randomly assigned to two groups: GraphoGame Fluent group (n = 15), which received a computer-assisted remedial reading intervention, or GraphoGame Math group (n = 15), which received a computer-assisted numeracy intervention. An additional, non-playing group, composed by second graders without reading difficulties, was formed (business-as-usual group, n = 15). Results showed clear benefits of GraphoGame on spe…
Frank H. Knight, pragmatism, and American institutionalism: A note
2009
This note deals with the debated question of whether, and to what extent, Frank Knight's epistemology was consistent with the general philosophy of American pragmatism. First, in accord with recent interpretations, I provide new evidence illustrating that Knight's views on science, knowledge and related philosophical topics present some important similarities with the pragmatic tradition. Second, I attempt to demonstrate that Knight's unsympathetic reading of Dewy and pragmatism was, to a relevant extent, a consequence of his aversion to the so-called scientific wing of American interwar institutionalism. © 2009 Taylor & Francis.
“She Isn’t Going to Give Up”: Women’s Resilience in Monica Ali’s Brick Lane – A Feminist Reading
2019
Abstract While Monica Ali’s novel Brick Lane is most often analyzed from the vantage points of postcolonialism as a text dealing primarily with the plight of the Bangladeshi immigrant community in London, it is difficult, if not downright impossible, to overlook the crucial role women and feminine resilience (in the face of not only patriarchy, but also racism, religion and social unrest) play in the novel. In actual fact, the story can much easier be read as the plight of women in their quest for self-determination and identity than as a novel about cultural clashes in the multicultural metropolis. The present essay sets out to prove that feminism is actually at the forefront of Ali’s nove…
L'irosa eloquenza delle strumae
2013
The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how Cicero in his in Vatinium employs the iconic power of the body of the accused, Vatinius, and its repulsive strumae as a logical tool to support his persuasion strategy, thereby creating an enthymeme based upon the premises provided by the features of the body. This way of reasoning rests upon a strongly oriented and often distorting reading of the physical characteristics of the body in accordance with the physiognomic and pathognomonic doctrines. As a result, the de-formities of Vatinius's body, instead of being used to commend Vatinius, become important elements in Cicero's strategy of belittling his opponent's authority.
