Modeling solid waste decomposition.

2004

The hydrolysis rate coefficients of sorted municipal waste were evaluated from the biochemical methane potential tests using non-linear regression. A distributed mathematical model of anaerobic digestion of rich (food) and lean (non-food) solid wastes with greatly different rates of polymer hydrolysis/acidogenesis was developed to describe the balance between the rates of hydrolysis/acidogenesis and methanogenesis. The model was calibrated using previously published experimental data [Biores. Technol. 52 (1995) 245] obtained upon various initial food waste loadings. Simulations of one- and two-stage digestion systems were carried out. The results showed that initial spatial separation of fo…

Reflexionsakustische Lagebestimmung von Trachealkanülen

1997

Non-invasive acoustic airway monitoring was evaluated in an experimental study. Recording amplitude and travel time of acoustic pulse response, an area-distance function of the cross sectional dimensions of the endotracheal tube and the adjacent airway was calculated to obtain an acoustic pattern of the airway. Measurements on models and excised human cadaver lungs were performed to discover whether displacement or obstruction of the artificial airway can be detected in the acoustic equivalent. Regression analysis revealed a close correlation between displacement of tracheostomy tubes and the shifting of the acoustic area-distance function (corr. coeff. 0.97-1). Dispersion analysis confirme…

Global-Local model for guided wave scattering problems with application to defect characterization in built-up composite structures

2020

Abstract Predicting scattering of elastic guided waves in multi-layered solid plates with geometrical and/or material discontinuities is of great interest to many fields, including ultrasonic-based Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and health monitoring of critical structural components (SHM). The problem is complicated by the multimode and dispersive behaviour of the guided waves. This paper describes a unified Global-Local (GL) approach that is computationally efficient in cases that can be very complex in terms of geometry and/or material properties. One example of this is a composite built-up structure. The proposed GL procedure discretizes the “local” region with the scattering discontinui…

Effetti dell'inquinamento sulla salute dell'uomo e dell'ambiente

2019

Synthesis and characterization of bi-functional photorefractive polymers

2001

Abstract A novel bi-functional photorefractive acrylate polymer with pendant carbazolyl groups and azo derivatives as side chains was synthesized, in which azo derivatives as electro-optic chromophores and carbazolyl as photoconductive moiety were covalently linked on the acrylate backbone. Photorefractive experiments showed that a high two-beam coupling gain coefficient of 93 cm −1 , diffraction efficiency of 12% and electro-optic coefficient of 26 pm/V were obtained. With increasing writing beam's intensity, the two-beam coupling enhanced gradually, and then reached saturation. Using the method of four-wave mixing, the photoisomerization grating was observed.

Extended X-ray emission in PKS 1718-649

2018

PKS 1718$-$649 is one of the closest and most comprehensively studied candidates of a young active galactic nucleus (AGN) that is still embedded in its optical host galaxy. The compact radio structure, with a maximal extent of a few parsecs, makes it a member of the group of compact symmetric objects (CSO). Its environment imposes a turnover of the radio synchrotron spectrum towards lower frequencies, also classifying PKS 1718$-$649 as gigahertz-peaked radio spectrum (GPS) source. Its close proximity has allowed the first detection of extended X-ray emission in a GPS/CSO source with Chandra that is for the most part unrelated to nuclear feedback. However, not much is known about the nature …

An architecture for autonomous agents exploiting conceptual representations

1998

An architecture for autonomous agents is proposed that integrates the functional and the behavioral approaches to robotics. The integration is based on the introduction of a conceptual level, linking together a subconceptual, behavioral, level, and a linguistic level, encompassing symbolic representation and data processing. The proposed architecture is described with reference to an experimental setup, in which the robot task is that of building a significant description of its working environment. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Contra la patologización intensiva en términos de derechos humanos: Activismo gordo en Argentina

2020

This work addresses the way in which Argentine Fat Activism has developed, in recent years, the demand for depathologization of fatness, taking elements from critical discourses on the health of fat people to frame them in a perspective typical of the Human Rights. First, the contemporary fat body is described in terms of stigma and discrimination, especially in the health field. Then, they refer to a series of critical positions on the pathologization and medicalization of fatness from the biomedical perspective, Fat Studies and Fat Activism. Lastly, a series of interventions that the Argentine activist collective Taller Hacer la Vista Gorda produced between 2017 and 2020 were considered, …

Red cell sorbitol concentration in relation to short- and medium-term variation of plasma glucose.

1989

To evaluate the time course of changes in red cell sorbitol (RCS) concentration in relation to variations of plasma glucose levels, RCS was determined in 7 normal subjects during i.v. glucose infusion (IVGTT); in 6 hyperglycemic insulin-dependent diabetic subjects while glycemia was normalized with Biostator GC 115 and in 4 diabetic patients in previously poor metabolic control, in whom normal glycemia was obtained in 8–10 days by intensive insulin therapy. During IVGTT, plasma glucose levels increased with significant differences from baseline at 5, 10, 16, 25, 60, 100 and 160 min and returned to basal levels after 3h; RCS concentration showed small and insignificant increases. During i.v.…
