A novel type of plasmonic light trapping structure is presented in this paper, composed of metal nanoparticles synthesized in colloidal solution and self-assembled in uniform long-range arrays using a wet-coating method. The high monodispersion in size and spherical shape of the gold colloids used in this work allows a precise match between their measured optical properties and electromagnetic simulations performed with Mie theory, and enables the full exploitation of their collective resonant plasmonic behavior for light-scattering applications. N-TiO2 Photocatalysts highly active under visible irradiation for NOX abatement and 2-propanol oxidation

N-doped TiO2 powders were prepared by two different sol-gel methods. Samples were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET specific surface area measurements (SSA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). XPS measurements revealed a signal at 400 eV assignable to nitrogen in the form of Ti-N-O. EPR signals are attributed to molecular NO trapped with cavities/defects possibly interacting with oxygen vacancies. The photocatalytic activity under UV and visible light was determined following the abatement of NOx and the photodegradation of 2-propanol in gas-solid systems. N…
Micromoulding of three-dimensional photonic crystals on silicon substrates

International audience; The growth of three-dimensional photonic crystals (PhCs) on patterned silicon substrates is reported. It is shown that deep trenches can be uniformly filled by a self-assembly of polymer microspheres, in a close-packed face-centred cubic lattice. The crystalline quality is compared for different channel widths. These observations are confirmed by optical reflectance measurements in the visible range, showing a bandwidth of enhanced reflection. The possibility to detach the PhC, i.e. to use the substrate as a mould, is also demonstrated. The potential of this approach for building PhC-based complex architectures is discussed.
Characterization and photoactivity of coupled ZnO-ZnWO4 catalysts prepared by a sol-gel method

Abstract ZnO–ZnWO4 nanocomposites were synthesized by a novel sol–gel method and characterized through X-ray diffraction, BET specific surface area analysis, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the samples was evaluated using the degradation of 4-nitrophenol under UV light as probe reaction. The ZnO/ZnWO4 molar ratio was varied in order to study its influence on the photoefficiency of the mixed samples. The ZnO–ZnWO4 nanocomposites showed higher photoactivity than ZnO and ZnWO4. Unmixing of human skin optical reflectance maps by Non-negative Matrix Factorization algorithm

International audience; We present in this paper the decomposition of human skin absorption spectra with a Non-negative Matrix Factorization method. In doing so, we are able to quantify the relative proportion of the main chromophores present in the epidermis and the dermis. We present experimental results showing that we obtain a good estimate of melanin and hemoglobin concentrations. Our approach has been validated by analyzing the human skin absorption spectra in areas of healthy skin and areas affected by melasma on eight patients.

The proposed observer is based on a well-known transformation of the partial differential equation describing the CSD to a set of ordinary differential equations (the method of moments). Influence of platinum on catalytic activity of polycrystalline WO3 employed for phenol photodegradation in aqueous suspension

Abstract A series of polycrystalline WO3 solids loaded with platinum (0.5; 1.0; 2.0 and 3.0 wt%) were prepared and characterised by X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, specific surface areas determination, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. XPS and X-ray results indicate that the samples loaded with Pt up to 1 wt% contained on the surface mainly Pt(2+) species, while those loaded with higher amounts contained Pt(0). Moreover, the samples were employed for a probe reaction, i.e. phenol photooxidation in aqueous suspension, and their photoactivity was compared with that of two TiO2 commercial samples, mainly in the anatase phase.
