Follicular adenoma in ectopic thyroid. A case-report

Highlights • Ectopic thyroid is thyroidal tissue located far from its anatomic place. • A patient under our observation displayed left submandibular swelling. • The FNAC test report described a follicular adenoma. • Based on the FNAC diagnosis, we surgically removed the mass. • The post-operative follow-up was uneventful.

The role ofSphagnummosses in the methane cycling of a boreal mire

Peatlands are a major natural source of atmospheric methane (CH4). Emissions from Sphagnum-dominated mires are lower than those measured from other mire types. This observation may partly be due to methanotrophic (i.e., methane-consuming) bacteria associated with Sphagnum. Twenty-three of the 41 Sphagnum species in Finland can be found in the peatland at Lakkasuo. Heterogeneity of carbon loss and its temperature sensitivity in East-European subarctic tundra soils

Arctic peatlands store large stocks of organic carbon which are vulnerable to the climate change but their fate is uncertain. There is increasing evidence that a part of it will be lost as a result of faster microbial mineralization. We studied the vulnerability of 3500-5900 years old bare peat uplifted from permafrost layers by cryogenic processes to the surface of an arctic peat plateau. We aimed to find biotic and abiotic drivers of CLOSS from old peat and compare them with those of adjacent, young vegetated soils of the peat plateau and mineral tundra. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a clinical condition that has often been neglected. The clinical diagnosis of PAD may be made on the basis of an accurate history by using the WHO/Rose Questionnaire or the Edinburgh Questionnaire. Three isozymes of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) have been identified. Their cDNA- and protein structures as well as their genomic DNA structures have been described. NOS I (ncNOS, originally discovered in neurons) and NOS III (ecNOS, originally discovered in endothelial cells) are low output, Ca(2+)-activated enzymes whose physiological function is signal transduction. Intramuscular tramadol versus ketorolac in patients with orthopedic and traumatologic postoperative pain: a comparative multicenter trial

This 3-day, multicenter, open-label, randomized, controlled trial was undertaken to assess the postoperative analgesic effect and therapeutic safety of intramuscular tramadol compared with intramuscular ketorolac in 48 patients undergoing orthopedic surgery and having postoperative pain assessed as 75 mm or more on a 100-mm visual analogue scale. Tramadol (100 mg/2 mL ampules) was administered as needed to a maximum of 400 mg/d, and ketorolac (30 mg/1 mL ampules) was given as needed up to 90 mg/d. Structure of the phenylalanine hydroxylase gene in Drosophila melanogaster and evidence of alternative promoter usage.

The complete Drosophila melanogaster phenylalanine hydroxylase gene isolated from a genomic library was sequenced. Gene structure consisted of five exons covering a region of around 3 kb. Position of introns in the C-terminal domain was conserved with mammalian aromatic amino acid hydroxylase genes. Putative promoter sequences in the 5'UTR and intron 1 were identified. A novel transcript was detected differing from that previously reported by the inclusion of a part of the intron 1 sequence. It could be produced using an alternative promoter.
