Forced Compliance, Double Forced Compliance and Experimental Dynamics in Social Representations

2007

The present article deals with changes in the subjects’ social representation of a topic (i.e. how they think about “studying at a school”) due to their single or double forced compliance in a counter-attitudinal direction. The single forced compliance was manipulated in two ways, first by having the subjects write an essay (Study 1), and second by having them hold a speech (Study 2). The double forced compliance consisted of having the subject write an essay plus hold a speech (Study 3). The changes in social representation were assessed at two levels, first at the level of the subjects’ responses to a questionnaire (some items of which had central and other items had peripherical meanings…

Bringing the child's procedural rights before the ECtHR through interpretative tools : access to justice, participation and representation

2020

The legal framework governing proceedings before the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) neither guarantees access to justice for children nor is it a child-sensitive procedure. Indeed, it does not allow for a direct hearing for children, nor does it provide them with an independent representative in cases of potential or actual conflict of interests. However, the Court has recently proved more conscious of such loopholes, and there is a trend towards the overcoming of such issues. The present contribution analyses this trend and justifies it by resorting to the interpretative reference to different international conventions, to the procedural rules of other international courts and trib…

Measuring Distraction at the Levels of Tactical and Strategic Control: The Limits of Capacity-Based Measures for Revealing Unsafe Visual Sampling Mod…

2011

The control theory of driving suggests that driver distraction can be analyzed as a breakdown of control at three levels. Common approach for analyzing distraction experimentally is to utilize capacity-based measures to assess distraction at the level of operational control. Three driving simulation experiments with 61 participants were organized to evaluate which kind of measures could be used to analyze drivers' tactical visual sampling models and the related effects of distraction while searching textual information on in-car display. The effects of two different text types were evaluated. The utilized capacity-based measures seemed to be insufficient for revealing participants' tactical…

The inhibitory effect of long-term associative representation on working memory

2020

Studies on how long-term memory affects working memory (WM) have found that long-term memory can enhance WM processing. However, these studies only use item memory as the representation of long-term memory. In addition to item memory, associative memory is also an essential part of long-term memory. The associative memory and item memory involve different cognitive mechanisms and brain areas. The purpose of the present study was to investigate how associative memory affects WM processing. Before the WM task, participants were asked to store 16 pairs of dissimilar pictures into long-term memory. The participants would obtain the associative memory of these pairs of pictures in the long-term …

From alternative representations to prospective visions. The administrative subdivisions in Palermo (Italy)

2016

Alternative representations of the city are not only a useful analysis tool, but they also provide elements of a conceived new version of lived space that can contribute to ameliorate the spatial justice of the city. This is even truer for intra-local spaces that are the reference scale for many public participation policies, grass-root projects and activists. In this paper, we present the case of Palermo where the administrative subdivisions of the urban space have been imposed – because of legislation about administrative decentralisation – on the historical and perceived ones. Alternative mapping shows intra-local spaces as places of identity definition and civic engagement. In our paper…

Didáctica de las ciencias experimentales y sociales

2005

ABSTARCT: Thi…

Differential memory persistence of odor mixture and components in newborn rabbits: competition between the whole and its parts

2014

Interacting with the mother during the daily nursing, newborn rabbits experience her body odour cues. In particular, the mammary pheromone (MP) contained in rabbit milk triggers the typical behaviour which helps to localize and seize the nipples. It also promotes the very rapid appetitive learning of simple or complex stimuli (odorants or mixtures) through associative conditioning. We previously showed that 24h after MP-induced conditioning to odorants A (ethyl isobutyrate) or B (ethyl maltol), newborn rabbits perceive the AB mixture in a weak configural way, i.e. they perceive the odour of the AB configuration in addition to the odours of the elements. Moreover, after conditioning to the m…

Growing a Project-Based Translation Pedagogy: A Fractal Perspective

2012

PICTURES, GESTURES AND DISCOURSES: A CASE STUDY WITH KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS DISCOVERING LEGO BRICKS

The awareness of the importance to look, through a mathematical lens, to the children drawings, gestures and discourses, considering them as diagnostic tools for the mathematics competences, stays at the base of this contribution. It discusses a didactic experience conducted in a Kindergarten (students 5 or 6 years old) in which we asked children to represent and discus a Lego block with a drawing and speech, observed from different prospective. The discussed results seem to us interesting both for researchers in Mathematics Education and for Kindergarten teachers who want to deepen the role of drawing and gestures as an expressive and diagnostic forms to analyze students’ knowledge, abilit…

Semantic publishing as a tool in smart, self-protective critical infrastructure

2016

Semantic publishing as a semantic representation of publications makes articles machine-readable. It involves linking an article with another articles and external sources. Also, data provided along with the publication can be made machine-readable, which allows visualizing the data in different ways according to a reader’s needs. This kind of semantic technology deployed on physics domain can serve for improving interoperability in critical infrastructure as far as it includes such facilities as atomic power stations, atomic plants and local experimental atomic devices, experimental fusion reactors and demonstration fusion reactors among others. Having shared terminology and data represent…
