Unshared binding sites for Bacillus thuringiensis Cry3Aa and Cry3Ca proteins in the weevil Cylas puncticollis (Brentidae)

Bacillus thuringiensis Cry3Aa and Cry3Ca proteins have been reported to be toxic against the African sweetpotato pest Cylas puncticollis. In the present work, the binding sites of these proteins in C. puncticollis brush border vesicles suggest the occurrence of different binding sites, but only one of them is shared. Our results suggest that pest resistance mediated by alteration of the shared Cry-receptor binding site might not render both Cry proteins ineffective.

The Measurement of Large Strains Using Electrical Resistance Strain Gages

It is well known that in the range of large strains, the electrical resistance strain gages have a nonlinear behavior, that is the variation of electrical resistance is a nonlinear function of the strain applied to the strain gage, which means that the gage factor K is not constant. Also, the Wheatstone bridge has a nonlinear behavior at large strains. Usually the two nonlinearities have opposite effects, therefore the overall nonlinearity decreases. This article presents an overview of the behavior of strain gages subject to large strains and of the corrections to account for nonlinearities of both the strain gage and the Wheatstone bridge.

Glucagon like peptide-2 (GLP-2) is a gastrointestinal hormone released in response to dietary nutrients, which acts through a specific receptor, the GLP-2 receptor (GLP-2R). The physiological effects of GLP-2 are multiple, involving also the intestinal adaptation to high fat diet (HFD). Pituitary resistance to thyroid hormone action with preserved circadian rhythm of thyrotropin in a postmenopausal woman.

We assessed the 24-h behavior of circulating TSH and the dopaminergic control on TSH release in a postmenopausal woman, who had elevated levels of serum thyroid hormones and an inappropriately high concentration of serum TSH, indicating pituitary resistance to thyroid hormone action. The patient was found to have a daily profile of serum TSH similar to that of normal subjects, except for the persistently elevated 24 h levels, suggesting that alterations in thyroid hormone negative feedback control did not affect substantially circadian TSH rhythm. Role of glutathione in Thiobencarb resistance in the European eel Anguilla anguilla.

Glutathione-dependent defense against xenobiotic toxicity is a multifaceted phenomenon that has been well characterized in mammals. In the present study, eels of species Anguilla anguilla were exposed to 15 ppm of the herbicide thiobencarb (S-4-chlorobenzyl diethylthiocarbamate) for 96 h. Eels exposed to the pesticide were grouped in 24-h intervals according to their time of death, while surviving intoxicated eels constituted another group (live animals). Heart in Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is a common endocrine disorder that produces important clinical consequences on the cardiovascular system. In overt hyperthyroidism the increase in left ventricular performance is predominantly sustained by an increased preload with enhanced left ventricular diastolic function and reduced systemic vascular resistance. The pattern of cardiovascular abnormalities is similar in subclinical and overt hypothyroidism, suggesting that a lesser degree of thyroid hormone deficiency may also affect the cardiovascular system. Untreated overt and subclinical hypothyroidism can lead to an increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), heart failure (HF), and cardiovascular mortality.
