Wall patterns influence the perception of interior space

The texture of an object’s surface influences its perceived spatial extent. For example, Hermann von Helmholtz reported that a square patch with black and white stripes appears elongated perpendicular to the stripes’ orientation. This time-honoured finding stands in contrast with more recent recommendations by interior-design experts who suggest that stripe wall patterns make rooms appear elongated in the direction parallel to the stripes’ orientation. Background The goal of the current study is to assess the difference in connective tissue adherence to laser microtextured versus machined titanium abutments. Material and Methods Six patients were selected and each of them received 2 implants, one combined with a laser treated abutment and one with a machined abutment. After three months, the abutments were retrieved together with their surrounding gingival tissue for histological analysis. Two-year clinical performance of a packable posterior composite with and without a flowable composite liner

The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical performance of a packable fine hybrid dental composite (Prodigy Condensable) and the influence of the additional application of a flowable resin composite (Revolution, SDS Kerr) layer on marginal integrity after 2 years in stress-bearing posterior cavities according to the Ryge criteria. In 50 patients (40.5+/-17.5 years of age), 116 class II fillings (metal matrix system, glass ionomer-cement-base in 36%, rubberdam isolation in 70%) were placed, with at least two restorations per patient. Studies on the subcellular pathophysiology of sublethal chronic cell injury.

Summary This paper summarizes some of the important subcellular events occurring after chronic sublethal cell injury. Chronic cell injury is defined as the result of injurious stimuli which permit cell survival though in altered steady states for protracted periods of time. The importance of ultrastructural and biochemical studies of these phenomena is emphasized. Among the phenomena discussed are alterations in lysosomes, cellular hypertrophy, fatty metamorphosis, alterations in microfilaments and microtubules, alterations in mechanisms of transcription and replication, disturbances in the cell surface and transport across the cell membrane, and alterations in intracellular transport.

Abstract A metabolic monocyte defect appears to correlate with non-responsiveness to hepatitis B vaccine in many patients on haemodialysis. This defect prevents production of interleukin-2 during T-cell activation after antigen contact. Receptors for interleukin-2 are, however, expressed in greater numbers than in healthy subjects or uraemic responders to hepatitis B vaccination. Visual Search for Grouped versus Ungrouped Icons in a Computer Interface

The paradigm of visual search was used to investigate how participants looked for a target file among distracter files in an icon-based computer interface. The purpose of these experiments was to study the effect of icons and spatial grouping on scanning speed. Does spatial grouping of identical icons increase the scanning speed? Do icons themselves speed up the search for a target file when compared with a condition in which the files are indicated with mere textual labels?
