Education specialist in the developed world will also find this guide to be an invaluable tool for analyzing priorities and arriving at cost-effective solutions. The out-growth of training workshops held at the World Bank, this book and CD-ROM present relevant policy problems and engage the user in a search for effective education-service delivery o…
Economic analysis and energy valorisation of by-products of the wine supply chain: the case of the 'Mamertino wine PDO'
2018
The paper reports the analysis of biomass derived from maintenance of a vineyard, to assess its potential as an alternative energy source, instead of the usual disposal of the wine supply chainâs residuals. The site studied is within the province of Messina, Sicily, in the area of Mamertino wine PDO, a wine of superior quality. The analysis suggests that use of this kind of biomass may allow a fossil fuel such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to be replaced by a wine wood chip biomass boiler, thus meeting economic and environmental criteria by reason of recycling for sustainability.

Poly(phosphonate)s via Olefin Metathesis: Adjusting Hydrophobicity and Morphology
2014
Olefin metathesis step-growth (acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET)) and chain-growth (ring-opening metathesis) polymerization was used to prepare linear poly(phosphonate)s with variable hydrophilicity. The first phosphonate monomer, i.e., di(undec-10-en-1-yl) methylphosphonate, for ADMET polymerization was developed, and potentially degradable and biocompatible, unsaturated poly(phosphonate)s were prepared with molecular weights up to 23 000 g mol–1 with molecular weight dispersities Đ < 2. These polymers were studied with respect to their interaction with a calcium phosphate bone substitute material from an aqueous nanoparticle dispersion that was prepared by a solvent evaporation miniemulsio…
Synthesis and characterization of amphiphilic comb-polymers via ring-opening metathesis polymerization of exo,exo-5,6-bis(alkoxymethyl)-7-oxabicyclo[…
1994
A number of exo,exo-5,6-bis(alkoxymethyl)-7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-enes (exo,exo-5,6-bis(alkoxymethyl)-7-oxanorbornenes) with long alkyl chains were prepared by reduction of the Diels-Alder adduct of furan and maleic anhydride, followed by alkylation with a series of different n-alkylbromides. These monomers were polymerized via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) catalyzed by ruthenium trichloride in ethanolic solution. Contrary to a helical conformation as it was predicted by a previous molecular model study the poly(7-oxanorbornenes) adopt a coil conformation in solution. In bulk the materials show side chain crystallization.
Heptanuclear hydroxo-bridged copper cluster of the dicubane-like type: structural and magnetic characterisations of [Cu7(OH)6Cl2(pn)6(H2O)2](C(CN)3)4…
2002
A new polynuclear copper(II) complex [Cu7(OH)6Cl2- (pn)6(H2O)2](C(CN)3)4Cl2 with hydroxo-bridging ligands has been prepared; the centrosymmetric cluster cation can be described as two Cu4O3Cl distorted cubane units sharing one copper cation. Imaging pore space in tight gas sandstone reservoir: insights from broad ion beam cross-sectioning
2010
Monetization of tight gas reservoirs, which contain significant gas reserves world-wide, represents a challenge for the entire oil and gas industry. The development of new technologies to enhance tight gas reservoir productivity is strongly dependent on an improved understanding of the rock properties and especially the pore framework. Numerous methods are now available to characterize sandstone cores. However, the pore space characterization at pore scale remains difficult due to the fine pore size and delicate sample preparation, and has thus been mostly indirectly inferred until now. Here we propose a new method of ultra high-resolution petrography combining high resolution SEM and argon…
Synthèse de nouveaux agents bimodaux hydrosolubles pour l'IRM, l'imagerie nucléaire, l'imagerie biphotonique et la génération de second harmonique
2015
The goal of my PhD studies was to synthesize new compounds for possible medical imaging applications. The first part of my thesis focused on the synthesis of heteroleptic ligands to achieve the chelation of two different metals aimed at addressing two types of medical imaging. We first synthesized porphyrins, which are well-known for the chelation of numerous transition metals. We focused on copper, whose copper-64 isotope is a β+ emitter usable in Positron Emission Tomography (PET). These porphyrins have been coupled with a DOTA derivative. This molecule, metallated with gadolinium, is well-known in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Our compounds display encouraging relaxivities for MRI ap…

Teacher Shortages, Teacher Contracts and their Impacton Education in Africa
2007
Primary school enrolment rates are very low in francophone Africa. In order to enhance education supply, manycountries have launched large teacher recruitment programmes in recent years, whereby teachers are no longer engaged on civil servant positions, but on the basis of (fixed-term) contracts typically implying considerably lower salaries and a sharply reduced duration of professional training. While this policy has led to a boost of primary enrolment, there is a concern about a loss in the quality of education. In this paper we analyse the impact on educational quality, by estimating nonparametrically the quantile treatment effects for Niger, Togo and Mali, based on very informative dat…
