Preliminary data on the occurrence of alien macroalgae in the vermetid reef along the coasts of Favignana Island (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea)

2017

Intertidal vermetid reefs are highly diverse systems that provide numerous habitats for animal and vegetal species, leading to an increase of intertidal biodiversity. These habitats, particularly vulnerable to environmental changes and human activities, are now experiencing high mortality in several areas of the Mediterranean Sea. Since alien macroalgae are nowadays considered one of the most serious threats to biodiversity and natural ecosystem functioning, we provide a first baseline assessment of the occurrence of alien species in the vermetid reef along the coasts of the Island of Favignana (Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area). Surveyes carried out in 2015 revealed the only presence of…

Interaction between filaggrin mutations and neonatal cat exposure in atopic dermatitis

2020

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a prevalent inflammatory skin disease. Loss-of-function mutations in filaggrin gene (FLG) represent the strongest genetic risk factors for AD, being strongly associated with early disease onset and persistence into adulthood.1 The epidermis of individuals with mutations in FLG is fundamentally different from normal skin being characterized by increased penetration of allergens.2 Recent birth cohort studies showed a significant interaction between cat ownership at birth and mutations in FLG (R501X, 2282del4) on the development of early-onset AD.3 This finding was replicated for the 2282del4 FLG mutation in a Dutch cohort study, and extended to further associate with…

Effects of Parietaria judaica pollen extract on human microvascular endothelial cells

2008

Abstract Pollinosis from Parietaria judaica is one of the main causes of allergy in the Mediterranean area. The present study is designed to assess if P. judaica pollens contain bioactive compounds able to elicit a functional response in endothelial cells. We have demonstrated that addition of pollen extract to human lung microvascular endothelial cells (HMVEC-L) induces a modification of cell morphology, actin cytoskeletal rearrangements and an increase in endothelial cell permeability. We further showed that the treatment of endothelial cells with pollen extract causes an increase of E-selectin and VCAM-1 protein levels as well as an increase of IL-8 production. The stimulation of cell–ce…

L'opacità abbagliante di Dio.Sull'ermeneutica diacritica del divino di Richard Kearney

2014

Phenomenological philosophy of religion (Söderblom, van der Leeuw and Otto at the beginning) stresses the impossibility of a conceptual definition of God and considers the sacred as the very object of religion. The sacred is an oxymoronic reality, because it is at the same time opaque and glaring, in the sense that it escapes an eidetic objectifying intuition, but is felt in the body in an immediate and also upsetting way. As Richard Kearney shows, on the level of feeling through the body subjectivity works on the Otherness, which is the phenomenon of its carnal Erlebnis, activating hermeneutical diacritical operations thanks to the role of imagination and under the condition of confidence …

The Relevance of Mineral Mobilization and -Dissolution on the Reservoir Quality of Sandstones in CO2 Storage Sites

2014

Abstract Rotliegend siliciclastic formations are important reservoirs in central Europe. These sediments consist of pristine red coloured and bleached, high porous and permeable sandstones. To evaluate the relevance of distinct fluids and their fluid-rock alteration reactions on such bleaching processes laboratory static batch experiments under reservoir conditions were conducted. Thereby mineralogical, petrophysical and (hydro-, geo-) chemical rock features were investigated by different analytical methods before and after the experiments. The achieved results suggest that during such fluid-rock interactions a complex interplay between mineral detachment and mineral dissolution processes w…

The Effect of Electronic Properties of Anodized and Hard Anodized Ti and Ti6Al4V on Their Reactivity in Simulated Body Fluid

2022

The electronic properties of barrier and porous layers on Ti and Ti6Al4V were studied. Barrier anodic oxides grown to 40 V on Ti and on Ti6Al4V are both n-type semiconductors with a band gap of 3.3 eV and 3.4 eV respectively, in agreement with the formation of amorphous TiO2. Anodizing to 200 V at 20 mA cm−2 in calcium acetate and β-glycerol phosphate disodium pentahydrate leads to the formation of Ca and P containing porous films with a photoelectrochemical behaviour dependent on the metallic substrate. A band gap of 3.2 eV and the flat band potential of −0.5 V vs Ag/AgCl were measured for the porous oxide on Ti, while optical transitions at 2.15 eV and a significantly more positive flat b…

Amaranthus grain as a new ingredient in diets for dairy cows: productive, qualitative, and in vitro fermentation traits

2022

Background: In recent decades, grain amaranths have attracted attention due to their valuable combination of nutritional traits, with higher protein and oil content than conventional cereals. Before they can be proposed as an unconventional ingredient in animal feed, many aspects still need to be investigated from field production to nutritive value. The present research aimed to study the agronomic traits, proximate composition, and digestibility/degradability, fatty acid profile, antioxidant activity, and total phenolic content of two grain amaranth species, Amaranthus cruentus and Amaranthus hypochondriacus (for a total of six accessions), grown in a Mediterranean environment. Results: B…

ENANTIOSELECTIVE REDUCTION OF PROCHIRAL KETONES PROMOTED BY AMINO AMIDE RUTHENIUM COMPLEXES: A DFT STUDY

2021

International audience; The origin of enantioselectivity in the reaction of chiral Ru amino amide complexes in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone was investigated using DFT calculations. For the most stable active catalysts, the full free energy profiles for the reaction were calculated according to the concerted hydrogen transfer mechanism. We succeeded in reproducing the experimentally observed enantioselectivity for the studied Ru amino amide complexes. Our results indicate that the high enantioselectivity can be explained by a stabilizing CH-π interaction existing between the phenyl group of acetophenone and the aromatic substituent of the catalyst, which plays a sign…
