We analyze the results of an extensive characterization study involving electrical and optical measurements carried out on hydrogenated amorphous silicon (α-Si:H) thin film materials fabricated under a wide range of deposition conditions. By adjusting the synthesis parameters, we evidenced how conductivity, activation energy, electrical transport and optical absorption of an α-Si:H layer can be modified and optimized. We analyzed the activation energy and the pre-exponential factor of the dark conductivity by varying the dopant-to-silane gas flow ratio. Carotenoid compositions of two freshwater Gammarus species (Crustacea: Amphipoda) and of their common acanthocephalan parasite Polymorphus minutus were characterized. The effect of carotenoid uptake by the parasite was addressed by comparing the carotenoid content of uninfected and infected female hosts. Using high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), co-chromatography of reference pigments and electron ionization mass spectrometry of collected HPLC fractions (EI-MS), several xanthophylls and non-polar compounds were identified. By means of ion chromatography the extensive and significantly higher loss of ions of G. pulex and G. fossarum in acid water (pH 3.0) as compared to neutral water is proved. While cations are being accumulated in the water, some ions (Na+, Cl−) leave the hemolymph in important percentage, others increase highly after being set free from the cells (K+ and Ca2+). The loss of cations with Asellus aquaticus in acid water (pH 3) is clearly lower than with Gammarus, and it is not significantly higher than when the animals are put into neutral water.

Optical gain, spontaneous and stimulated emission of surface plasmon polaritons in confined plasmonic waveguide

International audience; We develop a theoretical model to compute the local density of states in a confined plasmonic waveguide. Based on this model, we derive a simple formula with a clear physical interpretation for the lifetime modification of emitters embedded in the waveguide. The gain distribution within the active medium is then computed following the formalism developed in a recent work [Phys. Rev. B 78, 161401 (2008)], by taking rigorously into account the pump irradiance and emitters lifetime modifications in the system. We finally apply this formalism to describe gain–assisted propagation in a dielectric–loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide.

Conjugation and cleavage products in the thiolytic metabolism of the anticancer drug 4′ -(9-acridinyl amino)methanesulfon-m-anisidide were identified primarily by high-pressure liquid chromatography in combination with field desorption mass spectrometry. The spontaneous metabolic pathway of the drug, as related to its susceptibility to nucleophilic attack by endogenous thiols at the 9-carbon atom of the acridine moiety, has been studied. N-Terminal amino acid sequence analysis indicates that isolated atrial amyloid is derived from atrial natriuretic peptide

Isolated atrial amyloid, the most frequent senile cardiac amyloid type, was chemically analysed. Amyloid fibrils obtained from a patient (NIP) were extracted and the predominant low-molecular-weight polypeptide (approximately 3.5 kDa, designated ASc2 NIP) was isolated by size exclusion high performance liquid chromatography in 60% formic acid. N-Terminal amino acid sequence analysis of this polypeptide was identical to that of the atrial natriuretic peptide alpha-hANP for the first 12 residues determined.

Aggregation of the amyloid A? peptide and its accumulation into insoluble deposits (plaques) are believed to be the main cause of neuronal dysfunction associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD); small molecules that can interfere with the A? amyloid fibril formation are therefore of interest for a potential therapeutic strategy. Three new trehalose-conjugated peptides of the well known ?-sheet breaker peptide iA?5p,were synthesized.
