Biomolecular study of the human remains from tomb 5859 in the Etruscan necropolis of Monterozzi Tarquinia (Vitarbo, Italy)

2004

Abstract Archaeological excavation in an Etruscan room tomb, from the Monterozzi necropolis in Tarquinia led to the recovery of four individuals. It was hypothesized that they could be members of a single family group. As both archaeological data and classical anthropological analysis provided little information in this direction, ancient DNA (aDNA) was extracted from bone and tooth fragments of the individuals. For each subject HVR-I of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was cloned and sequenced. To identify the sex of the individuals, amelogenine and SRY genes were analysed. Short tandem repeat (STR) characterization was also performed. DNA studies were preceded by the evaluation of amino acid…

Effects of Interobserver Variability on 2D and 3D CT- and MRI-Based Texture Feature Reproducibility of Cartilaginous Bone Tumors

2021

AbstractThis study aims to investigate the influence of interobserver manual segmentation variability on the reproducibility of 2D and 3D unenhanced computed tomography (CT)- and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based texture analysis. Thirty patients with cartilaginous bone tumors (10 enchondromas, 10 atypical cartilaginous tumors, 10 chondrosarcomas) were retrospectively included. Three radiologists independently performed manual contour-focused segmentation on unenhanced CT and T1-weighted and T2-weighted MRI by drawing both a 2D region of interest (ROI) on the slice showing the largest tumor area and a 3D ROI including the whole tumor volume. Additionally, a marginal erosion was applied…

X-ray emitting structures in the Vela SNR: ejecta anisotropies and progenitor stellar wind residuals

2021

The Vela supernova remnant (SNR) shows several ejecta fragments protruding beyond the forward shock (shrapnel). Recent studies have revealed high Si abundance in two shrapnel (A and G), located in opposite directions with respect to the SNR center. This suggests the possible existence of a Si-rich jet-counterjet structure. We analyzed an XMM-Newton observation of a bright clump, behind shrapnel G, which lies along the direction connecting A and G. The aim is to study the physical and chemical properties of this clump to ascertain whether it is part of this putative jet-like structure. We produced background-corrected and adaptively-smoothed count-rate images and median photon energy maps, a…

A new system for animal products traceability and authentication: Use of DNA analysis of natural tracers and example of application to dry cured hams

2010

A few DNA based approaches have been developed to trace animal products from the farm to the consumer “fork”. These approaches make use of the animal DNA that can be recovered during all steps of t...

Conservation of genetic diversity in artificially regenerated holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) populations

2004

Reforestation with autochtonous species should take into account the preservation of the variability and the geographical structure of genetic diversity in forest species. In order to provide empirical data, genetic composition of an artificial population of holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) and its natural seed-origin population in Andalusia were analysed with six microsatellite loci. The genetic diversity indices applied show a reduction in the artificial stand if compared with the natural one, probably due to an inappropriate forester seed collection strategy limited to a few trees.

The marbled crayfish as a paradigm for saltational speciation by autopolyploidy and parthenogenesis in animals

2015

ABSTRACT The parthenogenetic all-female marbled crayfish is a novel research model and potent invader of freshwater ecosystems. It is a triploid descendant of the sexually reproducing slough crayfish, Procambarus fallax, but its taxonomic status has remained unsettled. By cross-breeding experiments and parentage analysis we show here that marbled crayfish and P. fallax are reproductively separated. Both crayfish copulate readily, suggesting that the reproductive barrier is set at the cytogenetic rather than the behavioural level. Analysis of complete mitochondrial genomes of marbled crayfish from laboratory lineages and wild populations demonstrates genetic identity and indicates a single o…

In Palermo the baroque festival is the ephemeral and occasional alter ego of monumentalisat…

Cotoneaster Majoricensis L. Sáez & Rosselló (Rosaceae), a New Species from Majorca (Balearic Islands, Spain)

2012

Abstract Saez, L. & J. A. Rossello (2012). Cotoneaster majoricensis L. Saez & Rossello (Rosaceae), a new species from Majorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). Candollea 67: 243–253. In English, English and French abstracts. A new species from the northern mountains of Mallorca (Balearic Islands), Cotoneaster majoricensis L. Saez & Rossello (Rosaceae), is described and illustrated. It belongs to section Cotoneaster Medik. and is morphologically close to Cotoneaster tomentosus (Aiton) Lindl. and Cotoneaster raboutensis K. E. Flink & al., differing however by various morphological characters. Data on taxonomic relationships, ecology, and conservation status of this new apparently narrow-ranged endem…
