The Fatty Liver Assessment in Germany (FLAG) cohort study identifies large heterogeneity in NAFLD care

Background & Aims NAFLD is a growing health concern. The aim of the Fatty Liver Assessment in Germany (FLAG) study was to assess disease burden and provide data on the standard of care from secondary care. Methods The FLAG study is an observational real-world study in patients with NAFLD enrolled at 13 centres across Germany. Severity of disease was assessed by non-invasive surrogate scores and data recorded at baseline and 12 months. Results In this study, 507 patients (mean age 53 years; 47% women) were enrolled. Designing robust immediate release tablet formulations avoiding food effects for BCS class 3 drugs

Abstract Food induced viscosity in the gastrointestinal tract is reported to reduce the bioavailability of tablets containing BCS class 3 drugs, mainly by retarding their disintegration and dissolution of the active pharmaceutical ingredient. The role of formulation factors in minimizing this negative food effect is largely unknown. MCC1019, a selective inhibitor of the Polo-box domain of Polo-like kinase 1 as novel, potent anticancer candidate

Polo-like kinase (PLK1) has been identified as a potential target for cancer treatment. Although a number of small molecules have been investigated as PLK1 inhibitors, many of which showed limited selectivity. PLK1 harbors a regulatory domain, the Polo box domain (PBD), which has a key regulatory function for kinase activity and substrate recognition. Surface-Wave Coupling to Single Phononic Subwavelength Resonators

International audience; We propose to achieve manipulation of mechanical vibrations at the micron scale by exploiting the interaction of individual, isolated mechanical resonators with surface acoustic waves. We experimentally investigate a sample consisting of cylindrical pillars individually grown by focused-ion-beam-induced deposition on a piezoelectric substrate, exhibiting different geometrical parameters and excited by a long-wavelength surface elastic wave. Simple Models for Wall Effect in Fiber Suspension Flows

Jeffery's equation describes the dynamics of a non-inertial ellipsoidal particle immersed in a Stokes liquid and is used in various models of fiber suspension flow. However, it is not valid in close neighbourhood of a rigid wall. Geometrically impossible orientation states with the fiber penetrating the wall can result from this model. This paper proposes a modification of Jeffery's equation in close proximity to a wall so that the geometrical constraints are obeyed by the solution. Plasmon-based free-radical photopolymerization : effect of diffusion on nanolithography processes

This Article interrogates the mechanisms responsible for nanoscale photopolymerization induced by confined and enhanced electromagnetic fields. Surface plasmon dipolar resonance of individual Ag nanoparticles was used as an optical near-field source to locally trigger the reaction of a photopolymerizable formulation. Laser excitation of the nanoparticles embedded in the formulation reproducibly generates polymer features with typical dimensions ranging from 2 nm to a few tens of nanometer. We have determined the physicochemical parameters and mechanisms controlling the spatial extent of the photopolymerization process. Validation of a Microscale Pollution Dispersal Model

The three-dimensional numerical model MISCAM (Micro Scale Air Pollution Model) has been developed to study wind flow and pollutant dispersal in densely built-up urban areas (Eichhorn, 1989). The model has been successfully applied for planning purposes by a variety of institutions in Germany. MISCAM consists of the non-hydrostatic Eulerian equations of motion and a transport equation for pollutants. Turbulence closure is carried out by means of a k-e-model. To reduce numerical diffusion errors, Smolarkiewicz and Grabowski’s (1989) scheme may be used for the calculation of advective transport. Additionally, sedimentation and dry deposition of pollutants may be taken into account.

A selective microscale x-ray fluorescence analyzing method for determination of trace elements

Abstract A new selective X-ray fluorescence analyzing method for trace element determination has been developed. In this method each trace element is measured independently. The excitation source is an X-ray tube that has a changeable anode and a variable high voltage. The exciting radiation is shaped with critical absorbers. The sample is viewed at backward angles through an absorber to reduce backscattered radiation. The estimated accuracy of this method is of the order of 10 per cent in thesub-ppm range of trace element concentration in organic samples. Measurement times are of the order of a few minutes.

The use of microfinance services among economically active disabled people: Evidence from Uganda

The findings suggest that disabled people make more use of microfinance services than previously assumed. A total of 89 per cent of the survey's respondents state that they have used at least one type of microfinance service.
