Structurally bound lipids in peat humic acids

2001

Humic acids from highly decomposed peat were subjected to oxidation with alkaline cupric oxide (CuO) at 170°C (single oxidation). Oxidation products were isolated as three fractions, oxidized humic acids, fulvic acids and lipophilic compounds. Isolated oxidized humic acids were subsequently re-oxidized (sequential oxidation) under the same conditions, and released lipophilic compounds were isolated. Lipids released during single and sequential oxidations were determined using capillary gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Identified compounds accounted for 3.3 and 0.12 wt.% of humic acid content, respectively. Lipid profiles of lipophilic fractions released during single and sequential…

CHROMATOGRAPHIC DETECTION OF SESQUITERPENE LACTONES IN PARTHENIUM PLANTS FROM NORTHWEST ARGENTINA

1999

Several chloroformic extracts containing some sesquiterpene lactones from autochtonous plants of Parthenium hysterophorus, collected in the province of Salta (Argentina), were separated and identified by high performance reversed-phase liquid chromatography with C18 column and propanol-water mobile phases, using gradient elution and concentrations of propanol larger than 10% (v/v). Lactones previously purified and characterized by H1 RMN, C13 RMN, IR, and mass spectrometry, were used as standards. The objective of the study was to check if the nature of the lactones was modified according to the altitude of the region where the plants were grown. Among the lactones, five were already descri…

Stereochemistry of terpene derivatives. Part 4:☆ Fragrant terpenoid derivatives with an unsaturated gem-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.0]hexane system

2005

Abstract Starting from (+)-3-carene 1 several chiral fragrant compounds with the bicyclo[3.1.0]hexane system 4–6 and 10–20 were synthesized. These compounds are structural analogues of naturally occurring fragrant compounds, such as ionones and damascones, and possess either an endo- or an exo-cyclic double bond in the bicyclo[3.1.0]hexane moiety. The absolute configuration of selected products was confirmed by X-ray crystallography and circular dichroism analysis.

Surface anchoring on liquid crystalline polymer brushes

2002

We present a Monte Carlo study of the surface anchoring of a nematic fluid on swollen layers of grafted liquid crystalline chain molecules. The liquid crystalline particles are modeled by soft repulsive ellipsoids, and the chains are made of the same particles. An appropriately modified version of the configurational bias Monte Carlo algorithm is introduced, which removes and redistributes chain bonds rather than whole monomers. With this algorithm, a wide range of grafting densities could be studied. The substrate is chosen such that it favors a planar orientation (parallel to the surface). Depending on the grafting density, we find three anchoring regimes: planar, tilted, and perpendicula…

Charge dissipation in e-beam lithography with Novolak-based conducting polymer films

2008

Charging of common resist materials during electron beam (e-beam) writing leads to deflection of the electron beam path, which can result in significant pattern displacement. Here we report a new conducting polymer to eliminate charging. A common approach is to place the conducting layer underneath the e-beam resist layer. Conductivity equal or greater than 10(-4) S cm(-1) has been reported to prevent pattern displacement. Some other properties such as a flat surface layer, chemical inertness and insolubility in both the top resist solvent and the developer are also necessary. The way to achieve all these properties consisted in synthesizing a conducting polymer inside an insulating polymer…

Patterning of Conducting Polymers Using UV Lithography: The in-Situ Polymerization Approach

2012

We report on the in-situ polymerization of 3T with Cu(ClO4)2 inside several host polymers such as Novolak-based negative-tone photoresist, polystyrene (PS), poly(4-vinylphenol) (P4VP), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and poly(4-vinylphenol)-co-(methyl methacrylate) (P4VP-co-MMA) to form an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN). Conducting IPN films in the order of 10–4–150 S/cm are obtained depending on the specific IPN composition. Moreover, the convenience of this synthetic approach has been demonstrated using a commercially available negative-tone photoresist based on Novolak as a host polymer. Novolak photoresist was properly formulated with 3T and Cu(ClO4)2 to preserve as far as pos…

Novel patternable and conducting metal-polymer nanocomposites: a step towards advanced mutlifunctional materials

2013

In this work, we present a novel patternable conducting nanocomposite containing gold nanoparticles. Here, the in-situ polymerization of 3T is carried out using HAuCl 4 as oxidizing agent inside PMMA as host matrix. During the bake step, the gold salt is also reduced from Au(III) to Au(0) generating Au nanoparticles in the interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) system. We found that this novel multifunctional resist shows electrical conductivity and plasmonic properties as well as potential patterning capability provided by the host matrix. The resulting nanocomposite has been investigated by TEM and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Electrical characterization was also conducted for different concentra…

Bisabolene derivatives and sesquiterpene lactones from Cousinia species

1993

Abstract The aerial parts of three species of the genus Cousinia have been investigated. All three species yielded sesquiterpene lactones, mainly guaianolides. In addition, one of the species yielded oxygenated bisabolene derivatives.

Deoxyribonucleases in Herpes simplex Virus Type 1 and 2 Infected Primary Rabbit Kidney Cells

1980

Abstract In primary rabbit kidney cells infected with herpes simplex virus four different neutral deoxyribonuclease activities can be detected by means of the deoxyribonuclease assay in DNA-containing polyacrylamide gels following their separation by discelectrophoresis. The method is suitable to follow independently the change in each activity of the different enzymes using only about 5 × 105 cells for each assay during the time-course of infection. Under these conditions one enzyme activity is constant, two disappear while the activity of a fourth one present only in infected cells, increases.

Sequiterpene-related compounds as endocrine disrupters in Oncopeltus fasciatus, and potential reduced glutathione synthesis modifiers

1999

Sesquiterpene lactones have been found to exhibit effects on insect growth and development. In this study, the bioactivity of natural lactones extracted from Centaurea mariolensis and some structurally related synthetic derivatives has been investigated. Assays have also been carried out in order to determine the potential of these lactones as modifiers of reduced glutathione (GSH) synthesis.
