Cellular, physiological, and molecular adaptive responses of Erwinia amylovora to starvation.

2013

Erwinia amylovora causes fire blight, a destructive disease of rosaceous plants distributed worldwide. This bacterium is a nonobligate pathogen able to survive outside the host under starvation conditions, allowing its spread by various means such as rainwater. We studied E. amylovora responses to starvation using water microcosms to mimic natural oligotrophy. Initially, survivability under optimal (28 °C) and suboptimal (20 °C) growth temperatures was compared. Starvation induced a loss of culturability much more pronounced at 28 °C than at 20 °C. Natural water microcosms at 20 °C were then used to characterize cellular, physiological, and molecular starvation responses of E. amylovora. Ch…

Incompleteness in Conceptual Data Modelling

2013

Although conceptual data modelers can ”get creative” when designing entities and relationships to meet business requirements, they are highly constrained by the business rules which determine the details of how the entities and relationships combine. Typically, there is a delay in realising which business rules might be relevant and a further delay in obtaining an authoritative statement of these rules. We identify circumstances under which viable database designs can be constructed from conceptual data models which are incomplete in the sense that they lack this “infrastructural” detail normally obtained from the business rules. As such detail becomes available, our approach allows the con…

Expert-based versus citation-based ranking of scholarly and scientific publication channels

2016

Abstract The Finnish publication channel quality ranking system was established in 2010. The system is expert-based, where separate panels decide and update the rankings of a set of publications channels allocated to them. The aggregated rankings have a notable role in the allocation of public resources into universities. The purpose of this article is to analyze this national ranking system. The analysis is mainly based on two publicly available databases containing the publication source information and the actual national publication activity information. Using citation-based indicators and other available information with association rule mining, decision trees, and confusion matrices, …

Response models for mixed binary and quantitative variables

1992

SUMMARY A number of special representations are considered for the joint distribution of qualitative, mostly binary, and quantitative variables. In addition to the conditional Gaussian models and to conditional Gaussian regression chain models some emphasis is placed on models derived from an underlying multivariate normal distribution and on models in which discrete probabilities are specified linearly in terms of unknown parameters. The possibilities for choosing between the models empirically are examined, as well as the testing of independence and conditional independence and the estimation of parameters. Often the testing of independence is exactly or nearly the same for a number of di…

Contour calculus for many-particle functions

2019

In non-equilibrium many-body perturbation theory, Langreth rules are an efficient way to extract real-time equations from contour ones. However, the standard rules are not applicable in cases that do not reduce to simple convolutions and multiplications. We introduce a procedure for extracting real-time equations from general multi-argument contour functions with an arbitrary number of arguments. This is done for both the standard Keldysh contour, as well as the extended contour with a vertical track that allows for general initial states. This amounts to the generalization of the standard Langreth rules to much more general situations. These rules involve multi-argument retarded functions …

Generalised Maxwell-Garnett equation: application to electrical and chemical transport.

2006

In this paper we discuss the implementation of different equilibrium concentrations in each of the phases into the Maxwell-Garnett effective medium formula for diffusion in heterogeneous media. We put the derivation given by Kalnin et al., J. Phys. Chem. Solids, 2002, 63, 449, on safer grounds and extend it to non-dilute carrier concentrations. The relation to Maxwell’s mixing rule is also elaborated. It is shown that the formula can not only successfully be applied to conductivity problems but also to describe steady state chemical diffusion in heterogeneous media such as polycrystalline samples. The comparison with the brick layer model corroborates these points but also shows that—in the…

Adaptive sparse representation of continuous input for tsetlin machines based on stochastic searching on the line

2021

This paper introduces a novel approach to representing continuous inputs in Tsetlin Machines (TMs). Instead of using one Tsetlin Automaton (TA) for every unique threshold found when Booleanizing continuous input, we employ two Stochastic Searching on the Line (SSL) automata to learn discriminative lower and upper bounds. The two resulting Boolean features are adapted to the rest of the clause by equipping each clause with its own team of SSLs, which update the bounds during the learning process. Two standard TAs finally decide whether to include the resulting features as part of the clause. In this way, only four automata altogether represent one continuous feature (instead of potentially h…

The Itô Integral

2014

The Ito integral allows us to integrate stochastic processes with respect to the increments of a Brownian motion or a somewhat more general stochastic process. We develop the Ito integral first for Brownian motion and then for generalized diffusion processes (so called Ito processes). In the third section, we derive the celebrated Ito formula. This is the chain rule for the Ito integral that enables us to do explicit calculations with the Ito integral. In the fourth section, we use the Ito formula to obtain a stochastic solution of the classical Dirichlet problem. This in turn is used in the fifth section in order to show that like symmetric simple random walk, Brownian motion is recurrent …

Streptococcus Mutans sortāzes A ekspresija, attīrīšana un raksturošana zāļu vielu skrīningam

2019

Slimības, ko izraisa patogēni, īpaši multirezistenti, piemēram, Streptococcus mutans, ir nepieciešams apkarot. Multirezistentu grampozitīvu patogēnu baktēriju transpeptidāzes - sortāzes A - mērķproteīna inhibēšana mazina patogēnu saistīšanās spēju - virulenci - un līdz ar to arī rezistenci. Bakalaura darbā Streptococcus mutans sortāze A tiek izmantota kā instruments, lai pārbaudītu novatoriskus ķīmiskus savienojumus, kam piemīt spēja inhibēt sortāzi A. Mērķis bija, izmantojot zāļu vielu skrīninga metodi, atlasīt ķīmiskas vielas, kam piemīt sortāzes A inhibēšana un kuras varētu izmantot, lai apkarotu multirezistentu grampozitīvu patogēnu izraistītas slimības.
