Modeling X-ray emission from stellar coronae

By extrapolating from observationally derived surface magnetograms of low-mass stars we construct models of their coronal magnetic fields and compare the 3D field geometry with axial multipoles. AB Dor, which has a radiative core, has a very complex field, whereas V374 Peg, which is completely convective, has a simple dipolar field. We calculate global X-ray emission measures assuming that the plasma trapped along the coronal loops is in hydrostatic equilibrium and compare the differences between assuming isothermal coronae, or by considering a loop temperature profiles. The influence of absorbed solar radiation by Saharan dust on hurricane genesis

To date, the radiative impact of dust and the Sahar an air layer (SAL) on North Atlantic hurricane activity is not yet known. According to previous studies, dust stabilizes the atmosphere due to absorption of solar radiation but thus shifts convection to regions more conducive for hurricane genesis. Here we analyze differences in hurricane genesis and frequency from ensemble sensitivity simulations with radiatively active and inactive dust in the aerosol-climate model ECHAM6-HAM. Radiative muon capture and the value of gP in nuclei

Abstract Radiative muon capture by nuclei is analyzed by means of sum rule techniques, providing a total photon yield calculated with RPA precision. The measured yields relative to the ordinary muon capture rate are well reproduced for the nuclei 12C, 16O and 40Ca using a value of the pseudoscalar weak coupling constant gP enhanced by only 25% with respect to its canonical value. Therefore, the large renormalization of gP claimed up to now must be reconsidered.

Strong and Radiative Decays of Heavy Flavored Baryons

We analyze strong one-pion and radiative one-photon decays of heavy flavored baryons within a relativistic three-quark model. Employing the same parameters as were used for the description of the semileptonic decays of heavy baryons, we calculate the couplings of one-pion and one-photon transitions of both ground and excited heavy baryon states. We predict the decay rates for all relevant decay modes and compare them with experimental data when available and with the results of other model calculations.

Single-molecule controlled emission in planar plasmonic cavities

International audience; We study the fluorescence emission from single dye molecules in coplanar plasmonic cavities composed of a thin gold film surrounded by two in-plane surface plasmon Bragg mirrors. We first discuss the effect of the presence of Bragg mirrors on the radiation diagram of surface plasmon coupled emission. Then, we investigate the role of the planar cavity size by single-molecule fluorescence lifetime imaging. Experimental data are compared to numerical simulations of the decay rates calculated as a function of the molecule orientation and position within the cavity. Gamma(Z --> bb): A signature of hard mass terms for a heavy top

Abstract We calculate analytically the weak radiative corrections to the weak neutral current gauge boson-bottom fermion vertex, keeping the mass mt of the internal fermion line for the relevant diagrams. We find, to order α, a hard mass-term dependence m t 2 M W 2 of the amplitude, for large mt values. Its origin comes from the unphysical charged Higgs coupling to fermions in the renormalizable gauge or, equivalently, from the longitudinal charged gauge boson couplings. The diagonal Z0 decay width to b-quarks decreases, due to these weak radiative corrections, by 0.6%–2.5% when the top mass mt varies from 45 to 200 GeV.

Axionlike Particles, Lepton-Flavor Violation, and a New Explanation of aμ and ae

Axionlike particles (ALPs) with lepton-flavor-violating couplings can be probed in exotic muon and tau decays. The sensitivity of different experiments depends strongly on the ALP mass and its couplings to leptons and photons. For ALPs that can be resonantly produced, the sensitivity of three-body decays such as μ→3e and τ→3μ exceeds by many orders of magnitude that of radiative decays like μ→eγ and τ→μγ. Searches for these two types of processes are therefore highly complementary. We discuss experimental constraints on ALPs with a single dominant lepton-flavor-violating coupling. Temperature effects on the performances of the ATHENA X-IFU thermal filters

The X-Ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) detector on-board ATHENA is an array of TES micro-calorimeters that will operate at ~50 mK. In the current investigated design, five thermal filters (TF) will be mounted on the cryostat shields to attenuate IR radiative load and avoid energy resolution degradation due to photon shot noise. Each filter consists of a thin polyimide film (~50 nm thick) coated with aluminum (~30 nm thick). Since the TF operate at different temperatures in the range 0.05-300 K, it is relevant to study how temperature affects their mechanical/optical performances (e.g. near edge absorption fine structures of the atomic elements in the filter material).
