Mass Determination of Francium and Radium Isotopes by a Penning Trap Mass Spectrometer

1992

Abstract A tandem Penning trap mass spectrometer is used for mass measurement of radioactive isotopes produced at the on-line isotope separator ISOLDE/CERN. The mass is determined directly and with high accuracy by measuring the cyclotron frequency of the stored ions. Measurements were performed on 209 210 211 212 221 222Fr and 226 230Ra. A resolving power of 5 × 105 was used and an accuracy of 1·8 × 10−7 has been achieved.

Evolution of Octupole Deformation in Radium Nuclei from Coulomb Excitation of Radioactive Ra222 and Ra228 Beams

2020

There is sparse direct experimental evidence that atomic nuclei can exhibit stable "pear" shapes arising from strong octupole correlations. In order to investigate the nature of octupole collectivity in radium isotopes, electric octupole (E3) matrix elements have been determined for transitions in ^{222,228}Ra nuclei using the method of sub-barrier, multistep Coulomb excitation. Beams of the radioactive radium isotopes were provided by the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The observed pattern of E3 matrix elements for different nuclear transitions is explained by describing ^{222}Ra as pear shaped with stable octupole deformation, while ^{228}Ra behaves like an octupole vibrator.

Determination of nuclear spins and moments in a series of radium isotopes

1983

Abstract The first investigation of hyperfine structure in radium isotopes has enabled the determination of nuclear spins, magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the isotopes with mass numbers A = 211, 213, 221, 223, 225, 227 and 229. Isotope shifts in the mass range A = 208−232 have also been measured. These studies were carried out using the technique of on-line collinear fast beam laser spectroscopy.

The radium Era: radioactivity and advertising of miracle products in the dawn of the 20th century in Spain

2020

The discovery …

Annual effective dose and excess life time cancer risk assessment from tobacco plants

2019

Cigarette smoking is one of the pathways that might cause radiation exposure due to the presence of radioactive elements in tobacco leaves used in the manufacture of cigarettes. From the health point of view, the knowledge of radioactivity content of the various radionuclides in tobacco leaves and their derivative products is important to assess the radiological effects associated with tobacco smoking for smokers. In this work, naturally occurring radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K and man-made 137Cs were measured in tobacco using gamma-ray spectrometry. Results show that the average concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K vary from 4.30 ± 0.2 to 11.85 ± 0.7 (average 8.17), 1.35 ± 0.1 to 16.…

Naturally occurring137Cs,90Sr and226Ra radionuclides in raw milk in the Sibiu province of Romania

2012

Milk is a sensitive indicator of the levels of contamination existing in the environment following nuclear incidents, for example at Chernobyl 1986 (Ukraine) and the most recent one in 2011 in Fukushima (Japan). The levels of three radionuclides, caesium 137Cs, strontium 90Sr and radium 226Ra, were determined in cow’s milk from various locations of Sibiu county from 2010 to 2011. The results were compared with the results taken after the explosion at Chernobyl in 1986. The values were within normal limits with insignificant increases of the milk that was collected in the area of Copsa-Mica and Sibiu.

Observation of octupole structures in radon and radium isotopes and their contrasting behavior at high spin

1997

Multinucleon transfer reactions have been used, for the first time, to populate high-spin bands of alternating parity states in {sup 218,220,222}Rn and {sup 222,224,226}Ra. The behavior of the angular momentum alignment with rotational frequency for the Rn isotopes is very different when compared with Ra and Th isotopes with N{approx}134, indicating a transition from octupole vibrational to stable octupole deformation. Throughout the measured spin range the values of {vert_bar}D{sub 0}/Q{sub 0}{vert_bar} remain constant for {sup 222}Ra and {sup 226}Ra and have a very small value for {sup 224}Ra, suggesting that the charge and mass distributions are not affected appreciably by rotations. {co…

Radium-223 treatment in castration resistant bone metastatic prostate cancer. Should be the primary tumor always treated?

2019

Introduction: Radium-223 (223Ra) improves symptoms and survival in patients with bone metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Study aim: To evaluate the impact of a previous radical prostatectomy (RP) on the outcome of 223Ra therapy in mCRPC patients. The primary prostate tumor left untreated could progress during 223Ra treatment. Materials and methods: mCRPC symptomatic patients treated with 223Ra were enrolled. Luteinizing Hormone-Releasing Hormone analogue was maintained. No other anticancer therapy was given. 223Ra was administered i.v. at the dose of 55 kBq/kg every 4 weeks for 6 cycles. Patients were stratified according to previous RP or not. Hematological toxicity w…
