Efficient Parallel Sort on AVX-512-Based Multi-Core and Many-Core Architectures

2019

Sorting kernels are a fundamental part of numerous applications. The performance of sorting implementations is usually limited by a variety of factors such as computing power, memory bandwidth, and branch mispredictions. In this paper we propose an efficient hybrid sorting method which takes advantage of wide vector registers and the high bandwidth memory of modern AVX-512-based multi-core and many-core processors. Our approach employs a combination of vectorized bitonic sorting and load-balanced multi-threaded merging. Thread-level and data-level parallelism are used to exploit both compute power and memory bandwidth. Our single-threaded implementation is ~30x faster than qsort in the C st…

Precise Somatotopic Thalamocortical Axon Guidance Depends on LPA-Mediated PRG-2/Radixin Signaling

2016

Summary Precise connection of thalamic barreloids with their corresponding cortical barrels is critical for processing of vibrissal sensory information. Here, we show that PRG-2, a phospholipid-interacting molecule, is important for thalamocortical axon guidance. Developing thalamocortical fibers both in PRG-2 full knockout (KO) and in thalamus-specific KO mice prematurely entered the cortical plate, eventually innervating non-corresponding barrels. This misrouting relied on lost axonal sensitivity toward lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), which failed to repel PRG-2-deficient thalamocortical fibers. PRG-2 electroporation in the PRG-2−/− thalamus restored the aberrant cortical innervation. We ide…

An Ethanolic Extract of Ampelopsis Radix Exerts Anti-colorectal Cancer Effects and Potently Inhibits STAT3 Signaling In Vitro

2017

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling is constantly activated in CRC, and has been proposed as a pathogenic factor and a therapeutic target of CRC. Ampelopsis Radix (AR), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, possesses low toxicity and has long been used clinically for the treatment of cancers including CRC. Some constituents of AR have been reported to exert anticancer properties by targeting STAT3. However, the anti-CRC mode and mechanism of action of AR have not been fully elucidated. Here, we investigated the involvement of STAT3 signaling in the anti-CRC effect…

Phylogenetic analysis of Lymnaeid snails based on 18S rDNA sequences.

1997

The 18S rDNA sequences of the six most common European Lymnaeidae species (Mollusca:Gastropoda:Basommatophora) have been obtained by direct PCR cycle sequencing and silver staining methods. The sequence alignment and secondary structures of the 18S rRNA gene of Lymnaea stagnalis, L. auricularia, L. peregra, L. palustris, L. glabra, and L. truncatula are analyzed. This gene proves to be a good marker for both specific determination and supraspecific lymnaeid phylogeny. The malacological importance is evident, considering the specific determination problems of individual snails and the present systematic chaos in Lymnaeidae due to their pronounced morphoanatomic uniformity, which makes a clas…

Schistosomes in the north: a unique finding from a prosobranch snail using molecular tools.

2009

article i nfo Samples of schistosome cercariae from three different snail species (Lymnaea stagnalis, Radix auricularia and Valvata (Tropidina) macrostoma) collected from lakes in Central Finland were analyzed using molecular techniques. Based on sequences of ITS region of rDNA, the parasite isolates from L. stagnalis and R. auricularia belong to Trichobilharzia szidati and T. franki, respectively. This confirms a wide distribution of these two species in Europe. On the other hand, the isolates from V. macrostoma represent a unique finding — they belong to yet unknown schistosome species falling into the bird schistosome clade. Therefore, identification of natural final hosts and morphologi…

Non-Dyadic Wavelet Analysis

2006

The conventional dyadic multiresolution analysis constructs a succession of frequency intervals in the form of $(\pi/2^j, \pi/2^{j-1});j = 1, 2, \ldots, n$ of which the bandwidths are halved repeatedly in the descent from high frequencies to low frequencies. Whereas this scheme provides an excellent framework for encoding and transmitting signals with a high degree of data compression, it is less appropriate to the purposes of statistical data analysis. This paper describes a non-dyadic mixed-radix wavelet analysis which allows the wave bands to be defined more flexibly than in the case of a conventional dyadic analysis. The wavelets that form the basis vectors for the wave bands are derive…

Negative pressure cavitation accelerated processing for extraction of main bioactive flavonoids from Radix Scutellariae

2011

Abstract To enhance the extraction efficiency and reduce the energy consumption, an emerging technology named negative pressure cavitation extraction (NPCE) has been shown to be a feasible option for the extraction of bioactive compounds in agricultural crops and medicinal plants. Meanwhile, it can be applied at the pilot scale as a manufacturing process for edible and medicinal plants. Currently, NPCE was proposed for extraction of baicalin, wogonoside, baicalein and wogonin from Radix Scutellariae on the basis of a central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM). With proper optimization (80 mesh of particle size, 40 mL/g of liquid/solid ratio, 75% aqueous ethanol as…

Enhanced extraction of isoflavonoids from Radix Astragali by incubation pretreatment combined with negative pressure cavitation and its antioxidant a…

2011

Abstract Incubation pretreatment with the function of endogenous enzyme combined with negative-pressure cavitation extraction (IP-NPCE) was established to extract calycosin and formononetin from Radix Astragali. Significant factors involved in the process were selected using Plackett–Burman factorial design (PBD) and then were optimized by central composite design (CCD). The optimum experimental conditions were incubation at 35 °C, 60 min, pH 4.0 and extraction at negative pressure − 0.080 MPa, ethanol concentration 60%, 60 mesh, 30 min, solid-to-liquid ratio 1:25 and two cycles. Under the optimal conditions, the extraction yields of calycosin and formononetin were 0.650 ± 0.015 and 0.307 ±…

Positive selection in development and growth rate regulation genes involved in species divergence of the genus Radix

2015

AbstractBackgroundLife history traits like developmental time, age and size at maturity are directly related to fitness in all organisms and play a major role in adaptive evolution and speciation processes. Comparative genomic or transcriptomic approaches to identify positively selected genes involved in species divergence can help to generate hypotheses on the driving forces behind speciation. Here we use a bottom-up approach to investigate this hypothesis by comparative analysis of orthologous transcripts of four closely related EuropeanRadixspecies.ResultsSnails of the genusRadixoccupy species specific distribution ranges with distinct climatic niches, indicating a potential for natural …

An optimized mass storage FFT for vector computers

1995

Abstract The performance of a segmented FFT algorithm which allows the out-of-core computation of the Fourier transform of a very large mass storage data array is presented. The code is particularly optimized for vector computers. Tests performed mainly on a CONVEX C210 vector computer showed that, for very long transforms, tuning of the main parameters involved leads to computation speed and global efficiency better than for FFTs performed in-core. The use of tunable parameters allows optimization of the algorithm on machines with different configurations.
