Hurwitz spaces of triple coverings of elliptic curves and moduli spaces of abelian threefolds

2002

We prove that the moduli spaces A_3(D) of polarized abelian threefolds with polarizations of types D=(1,1,2), (1,2,2), (1,1,3) or (1,3,3) are unirational. The result is based on the study of families of simple coverings of elliptic curves of degree 2 or 3 and on the study of the corresponding period mappings associated with holomorphic differentials with trace 0. In particular we prove the unirationality of the Hurwitz space H_{3,A}(Y) which parameterizes simply branched triple coverings of an elliptic curve Y with determinants of the Tschirnhausen modules isomorphic to A^{-1}.

Fields of values of odd-degree irreducible characters

2019

Abstract In this paper we clarify the quadratic irrationalities that can be admitted by an odd-degree complex irreducible character χ of an arbitrary finite group. Write Q ( χ ) to denote the field generated over the rational numbers by the values of χ, and let d > 1 be a square-free integer. We prove that if Q ( χ ) = Q ( d ) then d ≡ 1 (mod 4) and if Q ( χ ) = Q ( − d ) , then d ≡ 3 (mod 4). This follows from the main result of this paper: either i ∈ Q ( χ ) or Q ( χ ) ⊆ Q ( exp ⁡ ( 2 π i / m ) ) for some odd integer m ≥ 1 .

2022

Starting from the analysis of the concept of modernity, this contribution focuses on Habermas' critique of Nietzsche. In particular on the idea that Nietzsche is a break point with modernity and the basis of the post-modern. On the line of defense of modernity and its universalistic normative contents, Habermas re-proposes the transcendental in an anti-relativistic sense. The explosive power of "philosophy with the hammer" and the "total critique of reason" undermine the emancipatory demands of modernity with conservative effects. According to Habermas, the radical critique of truth demolishes itself and the claim to validity. The modern, on the other hand, can be reformed through a model o…

contra raz su autorità, autonomia e razionalità

2019

In this article, I first argue that the necessity to solve coordination problems in the wide sense does not imply the necessity of a legitimate Razian authority. Second, I claim that the Razian conception of a legitimate authority is incompatible with a plausible conception of rationality and autonomy.

Are decisions in a real choice experiment consistent with reservation prices elicited with BDM 'auction'? The case of French baguettes

2014

Abstract The aim of this study was to compare consumer choices observed in a real choice experiment and their reservation prices elicited with the BDM mechanism in order to assess the rationality of participant behaviors. One hundred and seventy-seven participants tested four French baguettes in each task. For the real choice experiment, participants were faced with 17 scenarios (17 × 4 baguette-price combinations). In each method, participants could select a “no purchase” option. Comparing choices and reservation prices made it possible to assess the rationality of participant behaviors. From a strict economic standpoint, 50% of observed choices were fully rational. When one baguette was a…

Rational Poverty or Poor Rationality? The Take‐up of Social Assistance Benefits

2001

In several countries social assistance dependence has been increasing since the 1980s. After surveying the theoretical and empirical take-up literature, this study presents estimates of recent rates of non take-up of social assistance benefits. Once methodological shortcomings of prior estimations are corrected, the results show that take-up has fallen recently and thus cannot explain the rising welfare receipt. Following theoretical predictions, the probability that a rational individual takes up social assistance increases with the expected benefit amount and duration, and falls with application cost and stigma. More than half of all households eligible for transfers under the German soci…

Panel — Assessing Critical Social Theory Research in Information Systems

1997

The Critical Social Theory (CST) program of information systems research is now just over a decade old. Although the number of researchers associated with the CST program are few, they have had a disproportionately larger impact on the field than other research communities. The main reason for this disproportionate impact can be found in the intense and incisive radical critiques of the foundational assumptions of our field that CST researchers have conducted. These radical critiques have helped to open up the theoretical debate on IS research and point out new directions for future inquiry. But as we turn the century, new challenges are emerging. New information technologies (IT) are rapid…

Towards a ‘Virtual’ Rationality?

1999

Psychology has, for a long time, shown the boundaries of human rationality. The rationalistic model of human behaviour assumed by neoclassical economics has broken down; the idea that companies are guided by managers who are able to weigh all the options and make the most rational or optimum decisions in accordance with maximizing principles, such as ‘profits’, cannot be held any more.
