Using Talking Books to Support Early Reading Development
2009
This chapter explores the question of how interactive multimedia talking books can promote young children’s literacy development. Whilst commercially available talking books can motivate young children to read, there is little evidence that they are linked to the development of skills known to promote reading itself. The ‘Bangers and Mash’ talking books (Chera, 2000), were designed to address this issue, and we review studies that evaluated their effectiveness as classroom resources that could promote reading-related skills and abilities. We then consider the various barriers to collaborative learning in Early Years classrooms, and describe how resources like talking books could address som…
Rapid automatized naming and learning disabilities : does RAN have a specific connection to reading or not : a replication
2006
The aim of this study was to replicate the study of Waber, Wolff, Forbes, and Weiler (2000), in which the specificity of naming speed deficits (NSD) to reading disability (RD) was examined. 193 children (ages 8 to 11) referred to a child neuropsychological clinic for evaluation of learning disabilities were studied. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) was used to determine how well rapid automatized naming (RAN) discriminated different diagnostic groups (learning impaired (LI) with and without RD) from control and from each other. The conclusion of Waber’s et al. study was that RAN was an excellent tool for detecting risk for learning disabilities in general but was not especially effec…
Testing the Reading Ability of Low Educated ESOL Learners
2013
Current national policy requires all further education courses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to be accredited, including those in English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL). However, there are issues surrounding this policy, particularly for learners at the lowest level, who bring with them a very wide spectrum of prior language and/or literacy knowledge. Some have little or no experience of literacy in any language and poor English language skills. A major barrier to assessment of beginner readers seems to be the examination process itself. This article summarises an on-going research project into the reasons for wrong answers given by low educated adult ESOL learners in readi…
5 – 7 gadīgu bērnu lasīt-rakstīt apguves veicināšana pedagoģiskajā procesā pirmsskolā
2021
Associations between teacher quality, instructional quality and student reading outcomes in Nordic PIRLS 2016 data
2022
AbstractProgress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) focuses on the reading proficiency of students mostly in the fourth year of schooling. A wide selection of studies has shown that family background and early literacy activities at home have substantial associations with student achievement in reading literacy. However, research focusing on teacher qualities and teaching processes is inadequate. In this study, we focus on associations of teacher quality (formal qualifications and professional identity) and instructional quality (classroom management, cognitive activation and teacher support) with cognitive and affective-motivational student outcomes (variables Reading Achievem…
Metacognizione e comprensione della lettura: quale rapporto?
2019
Reading development of late talking toddlers with and without familial risk for dyslexia : a follow up study from age 2 to 15
2015
Expressive language delay is one of the most frequent concerns for parents and health care providers, and it is also one of the most common reasons that young children are referred for evaluation. In the present study, it was examined whether late-talkers with and without familial risk for dyslexia have weaker reading fluency and comprehension at school age (grades 2, 3, 8 and 9) than typically developing, agematched children. The sample of the study was 200 Finnish-speaking children, who were divided into 5 subgroups: 1) Risk Group with no Delay, 2) Risk Group with Expressive Language Delay, 3) Risk Group with Expressive and Receptive Language Delay, 4) Control Group with Expressive Langua…

Correlates of Orthographic Learning in Swedish Children With Cochlear Implants
2019
This study set out to explore the cognitive and linguistic correlates of orthographic learning in a group of 32 deaf and hard of hearing children with cochlear implants, to better understand the factors that affect the development of fluent reading in these children. To date, the research about the mechanisms of reading fluency and orthographic learning in this population is scarce. The children were between 6:0 and 10:11 years of age and used oral language as their primary mode of communication. They were assessed on orthographic learning, reading fluency and a range of cognitive and linguistic skills including working memory measures, word retrieval and paired associate learning. The resu…
