Behavioural thresholds of blue tit colour vision and the effect of background chromatic complexity

2020

Vision is a vital attribute to foraging, navigation, mate selection and social signalling in animals, which often have a very different colour perception in comparison to humans. For understanding how animal colour perception works, vision models provide the smallest colour difference that animals of a given species are assumed to detect. To determine the just-noticeable-difference, or JND, vision models use Weber fractions that set discrimination thresholds of a stimulus compared to its background. However, although vision models are widely used, they rely on assumptions of Weber fractions since the exact fractions are unknown for most species. Here, we test; i) which Weber fractions in lo…

Anger: Adrenaline receptors do not allow us to be too sinful

2013

All of us feel angry once in a while, but if anger turns into a chronic state of mind it is not only annoying to those around us, it may also make us ill. Much of the acute anger reaction is mediated by catecholamines acting on β-adrenoceptors. Chronic activation of these receptors leads to their desensitization, protecting us at least partly from the adverse effects of sustained anger.

ChemInform Abstract: Regioisomeric 5(3)-Aminomethyl-3(5)-phenylisoxazoles: Synthesis, Spectroscopic Discrimination, and Muscarinic Activity.

2010

The regioselective synthesis of isomeric 5(3)-aminomethyl-3(5)-phenyl isoxazoles using different methods is described. Spectroscopic data, especially mass spectrometric fragmentation, were used to identify and characterize the regioisomers. The muscarinic activity of these isoxazoles was assayed on isolated guinea-pig ileum and atria as well as on isolated rabbit vas deferens.

Hsp60 in Skeletal Muscle: From Molecular Anatomy to Pathophysiology

2019

The chaperoning system of an organism is composed of the entire set of chaperones, co-chaperones, and chaperone co-factors and their interactors and receptors. Its functions pertain typically to protein homeostasis but also to many other activities inside and outside cells. In the skeletal muscle, with its multi-molecular structures rich in proteins and their continuous rearrangements, the chaperoning system plays a crucial role. However, little is known about the details of the workings of the chaperoning system in skeletal muscle development and during exercise and disease. Molecular chaperones are surely involved in muscle formation and maintenance under physiologic conditions and under …

(1) Background: The high-grade neuroepithelial tumor of the central nervous system with BCOR alteration (HGNET-BCOR) is a highly malignant tumor. Preclinical models and molecular targets are urgently required for this cancer. Previous data suggest a potential role of insulin-like growth factor (IGF) signaling in HGNET-BCOR. (2) Methods: The primary HGNET-BCOR cells PhKh1 were characterized by western blot, copy number variation, and methylation analysis and by electron microscopy. The expression of IGF2 and IGF1R was assessed by qRT-PCR. The effect of chemotherapeutics and IGF1R inhibitors on PhKh1 proliferation was tested. The phosphorylation of IGF1R and downstream molecules was assessed …

New imaging procedures in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy

1996

Lymphocytic and other mononuclear cell infiltrations of the retrobulbar space are observed in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO). The identification of somatostatin receptors on lymphocytes has provided a rationale for receptor-imaging with the radiolabeled somatostatin analog Octreotide in TAO. Furthermore, previous investigations have shown that quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows non-invasive detection of acute inflammatory changes in extraocular muscles. Therefore, in patients with TAO and controls, scans of the orbits were obtained at 4h and 24h after i.v. injection of the radionuclide and orbital MRI was performed. Compared to controls, patients with TAO showed a…

Aldara-Induced Psoriasis-Like Skin Inflammation: Isolation and Characterization of Cutaneous Dendritic Cells and Innate Lymphocytes

2014

Psoriasis is a chronic auto-inflammatory skin disease of unknown etiology affecting millions of people worldwide. Dissecting the cellular networks and molecular signals promoting the development of psoriasis critically depends on appropriate animal models. Topical application of Aldara cream containing the Toll-like receptor (TLR)7-ligand Imiquimod induces skin inflammation and pathology in mice closely resembling plaque-type psoriasis in humans. The particular power of the Aldara model lies in examining the early events during psoriatic plaque formation, which is difficult to achieve in patients. Hence, recent reports using this model have challenged currently prevailing concepts concernin…

Determination of Drug Concentrations in Serum and Dopamine Receptor Occupancy in Brain for Optimal Antipsychotic Drug Therapy

2009

Evidence has been given that antipsychotic effects of dopamine receptor antagonists are associated with 60 and 80% striatal dopamine D2 and D3 receptor occupancy. Receptor occupancy correlates well with concentrations of the antipsychotic drugs in serum or plasma, much better than the dose. The latter is consistent with weak correlations between antipsychotic dose and serum concentrations and explained by the high interindividual variabilities in drug metabolism. Using positron emission tomography (PET) for in vivo determination of dopamine receptor occupancy in conjunction with drug concentration measurements “therapeutic windows” could be calculated for the atypical antipsychotic drugs am…
