Identification and characterization of a constitutive HSP75 in sea urchin embryos.

Abstract An antiserum against a hsp of the 70-kDa family was prepared, by means of a fusion protein, which was able to detect a constitutive 75-kDa hsc in the sea urchinP. lividus.This hsc was present both during oogenesis and at all developmental stages. A two-dimensional electrophoresis has revealed four isolectric forms of this 75-kDa hsc. The amino acid sequence of the fragment used to prepare the anti-hsp70 antibodies revealed a 43% identity with the corresponding part of sea urchin sperm receptor, and in mature eggs a brighter immunofluorescence was seen all around the cell cortex where the receptor for sea urchin sperm is localized. PAH gene mutations in the Sicilian population: association with minihaplotypes and expression analysis.

Abstract The molecular basis of PAH deficiency in the Sicilian population is characterized by a marked heterogeneity, with 44 mutations at a single locus identified by a "gene-scanning" approach and accounting for a detection rate of 91%. The remaining 9% of PAH alleles does not bear mutations in any of the 13 exons and 24 exon/intron junctions. Three mutations IVS10nt-11 G > A, R261Q, and A300S accounted for 30.5%, whereas the remaining mutations were found at relative frequencies of less than 5% and 20 mutations were observed once only. Genetic elimination of known pheromones reveals the fundamental chemical bases of mating and isolation in Drosophila

Overexpression of the UAS-tra transgene in Drosophila melanogaster females led to the complete elimination of their cuticular pheromones. According to current models of Drosophila behavior, these flies should induce no courtship. In fact, they are still attractive to conspecific males. Three classes of stimuli are shown to induce courtship, with different effects on male behavior: ( i ) known pheromones produced by control females, ( ii ) stimuli produced by living control and transgenic flies, and ( iii ) as-yet-undetermined pheromones present on both control and transgenic flies. Intravitreal aflibercept for the treatment of radiation-induced macular edema after ruthenium 106 plaque radiotherapy for choroidal melanoma.

Genetic identification of neurons controlling a sexually dimorphic behaviour

Here, we mapped the area of the brain controlling this behavioural dimorphism. Adult male Drosophila expressing a dominant feminising transgene in a small cluster of neurons in the pars intercerebralis exhibited a female-like pattern of locomotor activity. The Major Conformational IgE-binding Epitopes of Hevein (Hev b6.02) Are Identified by a Novel Chimera-based Allergen Epitope Mapping Strategy

A novel approach to localize and reconstruct conformational IgE-binding epitope regions of hevein (Hev b6.02), a major natural rubber latex allergen, is described. An antimicrobial protein (AMP) from the amaranth Amaranthus caudatus was used as an immunologically non-IgE-binding adaptor molecule to which terminal or central parts of hevein were fused. Hevein and AMP share a structurally identical core region but have different N-terminal and C-terminal regions. Liver regeneration induced by a designer human IL‐6/ sIL‐6R fusion protein reverses severe hepatocellular injury

The cytokine IL-6 plays a significant role in liver regeneration in conjunction with additional growth factors (HGF, TNF-α, and TGF-α). Many IL-6 effects depend on a naturally occurring soluble IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R). Here, the chimeric protein hyper-IL-6, constructed from the human IL-6 protein fused to a truncated form of its receptor, was found to have superagonistic IL-6 properties, and as such, enhanced liver cell regeneration. Hyper-IL-6 reversed the state of hepatotoxicity and enhanced the survival rates of rats suffering from fulminant hepatic failure after D-galactosamine administration.
