Unsaturated Fatty Acids Drive Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase (ADAM)-dependent Cell Adhesion, Proliferation, and Migration by Modulating Membrane F…

2011

The disintegrin-metalloproteinases ADAM10 and ADAM17 mediate the release of several cell signaling molecules and cell adhesion molecules such as vascular endothelial cadherin or L-selectin affecting endothelial permeability and leukocyte transmigration. Dysregulation of ADAM activity may contribute to the pathogenesis of vascular diseases, but the mechanisms underlying the control of ADAM functions are still incompletely understood. Atherosclerosis is characterized by lipid plaque formation and local accumulation of unsaturated free fatty acids (FFA). Here, we show that unsaturated FFA increase ADAM-mediated substrate cleavage. We demonstrate that these alterations are not due to genuine ch…

ERAS Protocol for Perioperative Care of Patients Treated with Laparoscopic Nonanatomic Liver Resection for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: The ISMETT Exper…

2020

Background: Liver resection (LR) remains the best therapeutic option for patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with preserved hepatic function and who are not eligible for liver transplantation. After its inception, the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol was widely used for treating patients with liver cancer, although there are still no clear indications for improving upon it in both open and laparoscopic surgery. Objective: This study aims to describe our institute's experience in the application of the ERAS protocol in a cohort of HCC patients, and to explore possible factors that could have an impact on postoperative outcomes. Materials and Methods: We re…

Environmental management of granite slab production from an industrial ecology standpoint

2014

The granite production chain is high energy and water intensive with low resource efficiency. This paper focus on characterizing the potential for environmental improvement of the granite production chain by promoting the optimization of sawing technology, the implementation of rainwater harvesting (RWH) and the material recovery of wasted granite (sludge). The environmental performance of multi-blade gangsaw (MBGS) and diamond multi-wire saw (DMWS) technologies is compared by mean of life cycle assessment. Results demonstrate that DMWS technology contribute 30% of water savings, 40% of energy savings and 80% of material savings per square meter of polished granite tiles (60 x 40 x 2 cm) pr…

Spatio-Chromatic Adaptation via Higher-Order Canonical Correlation Analysis of Natural Images

2014

Independent component and canonical correlation analysis are two general-purpose statistical methods with wide applicability. In neuroscience, independent component analysis of chromatic natural images explains the spatio-chromatic structure of primary cortical receptive fields in terms of properties of the visual environment. Canonical correlation analysis explains similarly chromatic adaptation to different illuminations. But, as we show in this paper, neither of the two methods generalizes well to explain both spatio-chromatic processing and adaptation at the same time. We propose a statistical method which combines the desirable properties of independent component and canonical correlat…

Rumination for innovation? : analyzing the longitudinal effects of work-related rumination on creativity at work and off-job recovery

2017

ABSTRACTWork-related rumination is not a single construct, but consists of a dimension associated with negative emotions or affect (affective rumination), and a dimension associated with reflective thinking and applying strategies to solve problems (problem-solving pondering). In this three-wave longitudinal study across two years (N = 630) we investigated whether the relationships between work-related rumination, off-job recovery, and creativity at work varied along the two dimensions of work-related rumination. In addition, we tested whether the relationships followed normal, reversed, or reciprocal causation. The results showed, first, that in a one-year perspective affective rumination,…

Søvn og idrettslig prestasjon blant unge toppidrettsutøvere i Sør-Norge : En kartleggingsstudie av måleinstrumenter, søvnvaner, og søvn og idrettslig…

2019

Masteroppgave idrettsvitenskap ME517 - Universitetet i Agder 2019 Background: Sleep is important for both recovery and performance during training. Previous studies about sleep and performance are usually excecuted within competition periods, and measured by one or two of the three instruments Sensewear, Philips or PSQI.Aim: The aim of this study is to compare the questionnaire PSQI and the activity measure Sensewear with the Philips' goal of sleep, to investigate whether young top athletes have the recommended amount of sleep and whether there is a link between sleep and performance.Method: A total of 17 young top athletes participated in this study. To register the amount of sleep the ins…

Ultrathin and nanostructured ZnO-based films for fluorescence biosensing applications

2011

The fluorescence-based sensing capability of ultrathin ZnO-SiO(2) nanoplatforms, deposited by an integrated approach of colloidal lithography and metal organic chemical vapor deposition, has been investigated upon adsorption of fluorescein-labeled albumin, used as model analyte biomolecule. The protein immobilization process after spontaneous adsorption/desorption significantly enhances the green emission of the different ZnO-based films, as evidenced by scanning confocal microscopy, corresponding to a comparable protein coverage detected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Moreover, experiments of fluorescence recovery after photobleaching evidence that the protein lateral diffusion at th…

Do Fiscal Rules Constrain Fiscal Policy in Romania?

2020

At both macroeconomic and national level, in recent decades, European tax policies have shown a particular interest in addressing the spectrum of risk issues in terms of maturing the business environment and the lack of sustainable development of the economy. In Romania there has been a significant increase in public debt, which is increasingly threatening fiscal sustainability. This is due to fiscal rules that restrict the applicability of fiscal policy to balancing the national economy. However, fiscal policy did not act in the direction of economic recovery during the crisis that started in the last quarter of 2008, which had a negative impact on the Romanian business environment. High purity recovery of magnesium and calcium hydroxides from waste brines

2021

Direct disposal of concentrate brines, generated by many industrial sectors, causes serious environmental concerns. An industrial sector that produces high concentrate brines is softening water industry, in particular during the regeneration of ion exchange resins. These brines are mainly rich in sodium, magnesium and calcium chlorides, thus, their regeneration, by removal/recovery of magnesium and calcium, can be a valuable option to turn the brine into a source of minerals and reduce disposal costs and environmental concerns. In this regards, one of the goals of EU-funded ZERO BRINE project is to develop a treatment chain for the valorization and regeneration of spent brines from water so…
