Nitric oxide contributes to cadmium toxicity in Arabidopsis by promoting cadmium accumulation in roots and by up-regulating genes related to iron upt…

2009

Abstract Nitric oxide (NO) functions as a cell-signaling molecule in plants. In particular, a role for NO in the regulation of iron homeostasis and in the plant response to toxic metals has been proposed. Here, we investigated the synthesis and the role of NO in plants exposed to cadmium (Cd2+), a nonessential and toxic metal. We demonstrate that Cd2+ induces NO synthesis in roots and leaves of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) seedlings. This production, which is sensitive to NO synthase inhibitors, does not involve nitrate reductase and AtNOA1 but requires IRT1, encoding a major plasma membrane transporter for iron but also Cd2+. By analyzing the incidence of NO scavenging or inhibition …

Torus Topology based Fault-Tolerant Network-on-Chip Design with Flexible Spare Core Placement

2018

The increase in the density of the IP cores being fabricated on a chip poses on-chip communication challenges and heat dissipation. To overcome these issues, Network-onChip (NoC) based communication architecture is introduced. In the nanoscale era NoCs are prone to faults which results in performance degradation and un-reliability. Hence efficient fault-tolerant methods are required to make the system reliable in contrast to diverse component failures. This paper presents a flexible spare core placement in torus topology based faulttolerant NoC design. The communications related to the failed core is taken care by selecting the best position for a spare core in the torus network. By conside…

District heating networks: enhancement of the efficiency

2019

International audience; During the decades the district heating's (DH) advantages (more cost-efficient heat generation and reduced air pollution) overcompensated the additional costs of transmission and distribution of the centrally produced thermal energy to consumers. Rapid increase in the efficiency of low-power heaters, development of separated low heat density areas in cities reduce the competitiveness of the large centralized DH systems in comparison with the distributed cluster-size networks and even local heating. Reduction of transmission costs, enhancement of the network efficiency by optimization of the design of the DH networks become a critical issue. The methodology for determ…

Adaptive Feedforward Control of a Pressure Compensated Differential Cylinder

2020

This paper presents the design, simulation and experimental verification of adaptive feedforward motion control for a hydraulic differential cylinder. The proposed solution is implemented on a hydraulic loader crane. Based on common adaptation methods, a typical electro-hydraulic motion control system has been extended with a novel adaptive feedforward controller that has two separate feedforward states, i.e, one for each direction of motion. Simulations show convergence of the feedforward states, as well as 23% reduction in root mean square (RMS) cylinder position error compared to a fixed gain feedforward controller. The experiments show an even more pronounced advantage of the proposed c…

Reducing the observation error in a WSN through a consensus-based subspace projection

2013

An essential process in a Wireless Sensor Network is the noise mitigation of the measured data, by exploiting their spatial correlation. A widely used technique to achieve this reduction is to project the measured data into a proper subspace. We present a low complexity and distributed algorithm to perform this projection. Unlike other algorithms existing in the literature, which require the number of connections at every node to be larger than the dimension of the involved subspace, our algorithm does not require such dense network topologies for its applicability, making it suitable for a larger number of scenarios. Our proposed algorithm is based on the execution of several consensus pro…

Energy demand reduction of aluminum alloys recycling through friction stir extrusion processes implementation

2019

Abstract Aluminum alloys are characterized by high-energy demands for primary production. Recycling is a well-documented strategy to lower the environmental impact of light alloys production. Despite that, conventional recycling processes are still energy-intensive with a low energy efficiency. Also, permanent material losses occur during remelting because of oxidation. Recently, several solid-state recycling approaches have been analyzed; in fact, by avoiding the remelting step both energy and material can be saved and, therefore, the embodied energy of secondary production can be substantially reduced. In this paper, the solid-state approach Friction Stir Extrusion (FSE) is analyzed for a…

A Pareto optimal design approach for simultaneous control of thinning and springback in stamping processes

2009

One of the most relevant research issues in automotive field is focused on the reduction of stamped parts weight also increasing their strength. In this way, a strong research effort is developed on high strength steels which are widely utilized and they require a proper springback control. Springback reduction in sheet metal forming is a typical goal to be pursued which is conflicting with thinning reduction for instance. Thus, such problems can be considered as multi-objective ones characterized by conflicting objectives. What is more, nowadays, a great interest would be focused on the availability of a cluster of possible optimal solutions instead of a single one, particularly in an indu…

Health Indicator for Low-Speed Axial Bearings Using Variational Autoencoders

2020

This paper proposes a method for calculating a health indicator (HI) for low-speed axial rolling element bearing (REB) health assessment by utilizing the latent representation obtained by variational inference using Variational Autoencoders (VAEs), trained on each speed reference in the dataset. Further, versatility is added by conditioning on the speed, extending the VAE to a conditional VAE (CVAE), thereby incorporating all speeds in a single model. Within the framework, the coefficients of autoregressive (AR) models are used as features. The dimensionality reduction inherent in the proposed method lowers the need of expert knowledge to design good condition indicators. Moreover, the sugg…

A novel clustering-based algorithm for solving spatially-constrained robotic task sequencing problems

2021

The robotic task sequencing problem (RTSP) appears in various forms across many industrial applications and consists of developing an optimal sequence of motions to visit a set of target points defined in a task space. Developing solutions to problems involving complex spatial constraints remains challenging due to the existence of multiple inverse kinematic solutions and the requirements for collision avoidance. So far existing studies have been limited to relaxed RTSPs involving a small number of target points and relatively uncluttered environments. When extending existing methods to problems involving greater spatial constraints and large sets of target points, they either require subst…

Numerical Study about the Influence of Wall Angle about Main Strains, Thickness Reduction and Forces on Single Point Incremental Forming Process

2016

Abstract The current paper aims to study, using numerical simulation, the influence of the wall angle on the single point incremental forming process. For the analysis there has been used the LS-Dyna software and three explicit dynamic analyses were run for three parts with wall angles of 450, 550 and 650. The factors taken into account are the main strains, the thickness reduction and the forces on three directions. The material data introduced into the simulation were determined based on an uniaxial traction test on an Instron 5587 testing machine and the Aramis system was used as optical extensometer.
