Did the three little pigs frighten the wolf? How deaf readers use lexical and syntactic cues to comprehend sentences
2020
Abstract Background The ways in which students with deafness process syntactic and semantic cues while reading sentences are unclear. While some studies have supported the preference for semantic cues, others have not. Aim To examine differences in the processing of syntactic versus semantic cues during sentence reading among students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH). Method Twenty DHH students (mean age = 12.48 years) and 20 chronologically age-matched students with typical hearing (TH) were asked to read sentences written in Spanish with different grammatical structures and to choose the picture that best matched the sentences’ meaning while their eye movements were being registered.…
Human Simulation: A Transdisciplinary Approach to Studying Societal Problems
2019
In this chapter, we present a transdisciplinary framework where humanities scholars, social scientists, and engineers can work together to tackle large and complex societal problems. We identify the steps required to construct a human simulation model and the concerns and issues that must be addressed to ensure success. We also present some basic definitions and assumptions inherent to developing this sort of model.
Unnamed Soils, Lost Opportunities.
2019
Have you ever read a scientific article about brown bear referred to as “an animal with long, thick brown fur and a shoulder height up to 150 cm” instead of using its scientific name, Ursus arctos? Or one where Oryza sativa is defined as “a plant that may grow to 1.8 m and produce pendulous inflorescences 50 cm long with edible caryopses”? Science employs as much as possible simple, stable, and widely accepted international classification systems for naming beings and things. The best known of such systems is the Linnaean system for naming organisms by two Latin terms, which refer to genus and species. Classifications are used in other fields, such as astronomy, chemistry, metallurgy, physi…
A collaborative writing approach to wikis: Design, implementation, and evaluation
2011
Published version of an article from the journal:Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology. Also available from the publisher: http://iisit.org/Vol8/IISITv8p431-449Hadjerrouit224.pdf Wikis provide teachers with potentially significant opportunities for creating socially engaged tasks that require active student participation and collaboration. Wikis allow students to work together to develop content on the web, giving them a sense of how writing can be carried out collaboratively. Collaborative writing offer opportunities not only to practice literature review, academic reading and writing, but also to stimulate reflection, knowledge sharing, and critical thinking. However, des…

Rekrutteringen til de utøvende musikkutdanningene i Norge
2012
Published version of an article in the journal: Norsk tidsskrift for musikkforskning. Also freely available on the Internet: http://journal.uia.no/index.php/NTM/article/view/65 The admission to the music performance programs in Norway is not coordinated. There are good reasons for that, but it also presents some challenges. An example of these is that there are no surveys at the national level of the changes over time in the number of applicants to the classical and popular music performance programs. The article contributes to new knowledge and insight in this area in that it explains and discusses the findings of three empirical studies in the 2000s, studies that provide the basis for ans…
Developing web-based learning resources in school education: a user-centered approach
2010
Published version of an article from the journal:Interdisciplinary Journal of Knowledge and Learning Objects. Also available from the publisher:http://www.ijello.org/Volume6/IJELLOv6p115-135Hadjerrouit688.pdf Web-based learning resources (WBLRs) are potentially powerful tools for enhancing teachingand learning processes in school education. They can provide teachers and learners with a widerange of new and exciting experiences that are not possible in a traditional classroom. However,WBLRs are still the domain of technical and software experts rather than teachers and learners. As a result, much of the development of WBLRs is carried out without a true understanding ofissues pertinent to lea…

Integrating user preference to similarity queries over medical images datasets
2010
International audience; Large amounts of images from medical exams are being stored in databases, so developing retrieval techniques is an important research problem. Retrieval based on the image visual content is usually better than using textual descriptions, as they seldom gives every nuances that the user may be interested in. Content-based image retrieval employs the similarity among images for retrieval. However, similarity is evaluated using numeric methods, and they often orders the images by similarity in a way rather distinct from the user's intention. In this paper, we propose a technique to allow expressing the user's preference over attributes associated to the images, so simil…
