Determination of arsenic compounds in beverages by high-performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.
2005
Arsenic compounds including arsenous acid (As(III)), arsenic acid (As(V)), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) and monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). A Hamilton PRX-100 anionic-exchange column and a pH 8.5 K(2)HPO(4)/KH(2)PO(4) 5.0x10(-3)molL(-1) mobile phase were used to achieve arsenic speciation. The separation of arsenic species provided peaks of As(III) at 2.75min, DMA at 3.33min, MMA at 5.17min and As(V) at 12.5min. The detection limits, defined as three times the standard deviation of the lowest standard measurements, were found to be 0.2, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5ngmL(-1) f…
On the terminology of voice research
1993
Summary This article reviews problems associated with establishment of a scientifically accurate, internationally recognized, multilingual terminology to describe voice. Two strategies for developing terminology are discussed: consensus and dictation. Ontological decisions are considered an integral part of developing terminology. We conclude that terminological problems should be solved by a terminological committee—as yet to be established—as they average from problems in interpreting the literature and the results of voice research. A comprehensive bibliography and audio tape of the multilingual terminology describing voice would help facilitate adaptation and understanding of the terms …
Monotonous consumption of fibre-enriched bread at breakfast increases satiety and influences subsequent food intake
2012
Research report; International audience; This study aimed to observe the influence of the monotonous consumption of two types of fibre-enriched bread at breakfast on hedonic liking for the bread, subsequent hunger and energy intake. Two groups of unrestrained normal weight participants were given either white sandwich bread (WS) or multigrain sandwich bread (MG) at breakfast (the sensory properties of the WS were more similar to the usual bread eaten by the participants than those of the MG). In each group, two 15-day cross-over conditions were set up. During the experimental condition the usual breakfast of each participant was replaced by an isocaloric portion of plain bread (WS or MG). D…
Influence of substrate oxidation on the reward system, no role of dietary fibre.
2011
International audience; It has been suggested that a high intake of dietary fibre helps regulate energy intake and satiety. The present study aimed to examine whether dietary fibre influenced the liking and wanting components of the food reward system, the metabolic state or subsequent intake. Five sessions involving 32 normal-weight subjects (16 men and 16 women, 30.6 ± 7.6 year) were held. The sessions differed in the composition of the bread eaten during breakfasts (dietary fibre content varied from 2.4 to 12.8 g/100 g). Several factors such as the palatability, weight, volume, energy content and macronutrient composition of the breakfasts were adjusted. Energy expenditure, the respirato…
Measurement of the inelastic proton-proton cross-section at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
2011
The dependence of the rate of proton–proton interactions on the centre-of-mass collision energy, √s, is of fundamental importance for both hadron collider physics and particle astrophysics. The dependence cannot yet be calculated from first principles; therefore, experimental measurements are needed. Here we present the first measurement of the inelastic proton–proton interaction cross-section at a centre-of-mass energy, √s, of 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events are selected by requiring hits on scintillation counters mounted in the forward region of the detector. An inelastic cross-section of 60.3±2.1 mb is measured for ξ>5×10[superscript −6], where ξ is ca…
X-ray diffraction line broadening on vibrating dry-milled Two Crows sepiolite
2006
A reference sample of sepiolite and products of its comminution by vibrating dry-milling have been studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) line-broadening analysis, complementary field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images and surface area measurements. The apparent crystallite sizes determined via XRD are in agreement with observations on FESEM images. The sepiolite aggregates consist of lath-shaped agglutinations of prisms and pinacoids elongated along [001], each lath including several crystallites in that direction. The surface area magnitudes are in the range of previous experimental measurements of other sepiolites. The results obtained show the effectiveness of vibro-mil…
Synthetic Aperture Lensless Digital Holographic Microscopy (SALDHM) for Superresolved Biological Imaging
2013
Lensless digital holographic microscopy (LDHM) relates with the capability to achieve microscopic imaging working without lenses in the regime of holography. LDHM uses an extremely simplified setup and provides micron-range lateral and depth resolutions in three-dimensional (3D) imaging. Typically, LDHM uses a pinhole to provide spherical divergent illumination over the sample. Then, two different basic schemes are usually adopted for providing holographic recording. The first one assumes the interference between two in-line waves since diffraction by the sample can be considered as a perturbation of the reference wave. The second scheme uses an external reference beam in an off-line config…
Assessing the particle size of a broadly dispersed powder by complementary techniques
1998
The experimental determination of reliable particle size distribution curves and statistical parameters of broad distributions is known to be a difficult task. This problem is addressed here in an attempt to characterize the granularity of three distinct batches of a pharmaceutical powder (fenofibrate from Fournier Laboratories). The methodology consists in comparing the results, expressed in terms of surface based mean diameter, as obtained by three complementary techniques, namely optical microscopy image analysis, laser light low angle diffraction and surface area measurement by krypton physisorption. These techniques are applied in parallel to the material of interest and to a certified…

Health procrastination: The experience of 35-44 years old men
2018
The focal concept of this study is health procrastination. Delay in seeking help from medical practitioners is an increasing problem in Latvia, particularly with men between the ages of 35-44. Failures in primary and secondary prevention create a number of negative consequences, for instance, longer and more complex treatment; lower recovery prognosis as well as higher treatment costs. Nevertheless, the aforementioned group often avoids medical treatment. The aim of this study was to understand the experience of 35-44 years old men in terms of their health procrastination in qualitative terms. Semi-structured in-depth interviews with 48 men within the age range of 35-44 years were conducted…
