Third nerve palsy as the sole manifestation of midbrain ischemia

1995

Thirty-seven patients with risk factors for the development of cerebrovascular diseases had sudden onset isolated third nerve palsy and abnormal masseter reflex and/or electro-oculographic findings indicating a causative midbrain lesion. Improvement or recovery of the third nerve palsies was accompanied by improvement or recovery of the abnormal electrophysiologic findings pointing to their functional significance. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 29 of these patients demonstrated corresponding ischemic midbrain lesions in eight, ipsilateral in five patients, bilateral in three. In another three patients with MRI proven midbrain lesions (ipsilateral in two, bilateral in one) electrophysi…

Triceps surae fascicle stretch is poorly correlated with short latency stretch reflex size

2015

Introduction: The short latency stretch reflex (SLR) is well described, but the stimulus that evokes the SLR remains elusive. One hypothesis states that reflex size is proportional to muscle fiber stretch, so this study examined the relationship between these 2 parameters in human triceps surae muscles. Methods: Achilles tendon taps and dorsiflexion stretches with different amplitudes and preactivation torques were applied to 6 participants while electromyography and muscle fascicle length changes were recorded in soleus and medial gastrocnemius (MG). Results: In response to tendon taps, neither fascicle length nor velocity changes were correlated with SLR size in either muscle, but acceler…

Acute (0-2h) and delayed (2-8D) effects of exercise-induced muscle damage and soreness on elbow target movements.

2011

The aim was to examine the acute and delayed effects of exercise-induced muscle damage and soreness on elbow target movements (TM) performance and control. Ten males performed an exercise of 50 maximal eccentric elbow actions. TMs were performed at three movement ranges. Maximal forces, active stretch reflex and TM were tested, and muscle soreness, creatine kinase and elbow joint stiffness were determined acute (after and 2 h) and delayed (2, 4, 6, 8d) postexercise. Both the long lasting muscle soreness and force drop were observed after the exercise. Joint stiffness was increased at 2 h postexercise. The highest deterioration in flexion-TM performance was found at the time (2 h) and at the…

Frozen shoulder: a sympathetic dystrophy?

2000

Diagnostic and clinical features of the frozen shoulder syndrome and the Sudeck syndrome are similar in many aspects. Radioisotope bone scan shows an increased uptake in affected areas in both diseases, while native radiographs show a progressive demineralisation. Measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) by quantitative digital radiography objectified these local decalcification processes in an early stage of the frozen shoulder syndrome; 10 of 12 patients with primary frozen shoulder had BMD decreases greater 21% in the humeral head of the affected shoulder compared to the non-affected side. In the immobilised control group with degenerative changes of the rotator cuff, calcifying tendini…

Leg and joint stiffness in human hopping

2010

The present study investigated the regulation of leg and joint stiffness in hopping at different intensity levels. Eight male subjects performed bilateral hopping at various intensity levels that were determined by peak vertical ground reaction force (GRF). In addition to the GRF, the measurements included hopping kinematics and electromyography (EMG) of selected leg muscles. While the leg and ankle joint stiffness remained invariant, the knee joint stiffness increased significantly (P<0.01) with the hopping intensity. EMG analysis revealed a significant increase in averaged EMG for all the measured muscles before and during the early phase of ground contact (P<0.05-0.001) with increasing h…

Spinal and supraspinal mechanisms affecting torque development at different joint angles

2015

INTRODUCTION We examined the neural mechanisms responsible for plantar flexion torque changes at different joint positions. METHODS Nine subjects performed maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) at 6 ankle-knee angle combinations [3 ankle angles (dorsiflexion, anatomic position, plantar flexion) and 2 knee angles (flexion, full extension)]. Neural mechanisms were determined by V-wave, H-reflex (at rest and during MVC), and electromyography during MVC (RMS), normalized to the muscle compound action potential (V/Msup, Hmax/Mmax, Hsup Msup and RMS/Msup) and voluntary activation (VA), while muscle function was assessed by doublet amplitude. RESULTS MVC and doublet amplitude were significantly low…

“I want to do well for myself as well!” : Constructing coaching careers in elite women’s football

2019

There is a limited understanding of career development of sport coaches, especially from the subjective perspective focused on personal meaning and evaluation of this life project in sport. We drew on career construction theory and narrative methodology to explore football coaches’ career development, adaptability resources, and the meanings they assigned to their journeys. Ten women’s football (soccer) coaches (2 women) aged 23-60 in England took part in narrative interviews which we analysed using thematic narrative analysis. Our analysis indicated that early immersion into the football narrative context most often resulted in low career exploration and a strong commitment to coaching as …
