A study of a differential method for a field diffracted by a rough surface

2006

Since more than one decade, a new generation of microscopes was developed. It is about near field microscopes. Among these devices, we are interested in the PSTM (Photon Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy). Images obtained by this instrument do not reflect, with a better resolution, the topography of the studied samples. In order to improve the performance of this apparatus, several models have been developed. In our case, we propose to retake, by using a differential method, the study of a rough surface. The surface is modelled as two pavements of different sizes and refractive indices. Theoretically, the obtained results agree well with results obtained for a surface having submicronic asperi…

Above-bandgap ordinary optical properties of GaSe single crystal

2009

We report above-bandgap ordinary optical properties of ε-phase GaSe single crystal. Reference-quality pseudodielectric function 〈ε(E)〉 = 〈ε1(E)〉+i〈ε2(E)〉 and pseudorefractive index 〈N(E)〉 = 〈n(E)〉+i〈k(E)〉 spectra were measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry from 0.73 to 6.45 eV at room temperature for the light polarization perpendicular to the optic axis (math⊥math). The 〈ε〉 spectrum exhibited several interband-transition critical-point structures. Analysis of second-energy derivatives calculated numerically from the measured data yielded the critical-point energy values. Carmen.Martinez-Tomas@uv.es

Refractive Indices and Deviations in Refractive Indices for Binary Mixtures of 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Trifluoromethanesulfonate with Methanol, E…

2009

Refractive indices of the binary mixtures of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([emim][triflate]) with methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, and 2-propanol were experimentally measured over the whole range of compositions at T = (288.15 to 338.15) K and atmospheric pressure. From the experimental data, deviations in refractive indices have been calculated and fitted to an extended version of the Redlich−Kister equation, which takes into account the dependence on composition and temperature simultaneously. This dependence has been discussed. The deviations are always positive, and their extent follows the sequence methanol > ethanol > 2-propanol > 1-propanol, increasing when tem…

Opals infiltrated with a stimuli-responsive hydrogel for ethanol vapor sensing

2013

We report on a novel class of optical materials for ethanol vapor sensing, based on polystyrene opals infiltrated with an innovative stimuli responsive hydrogel. We describe the fabrication process of the bare polystyrene opals and their subsequent infiltration. The optical characterization of the photonic crystal templates was performed to prove the good quality of the samples. Measurements on the infiltrated opals showed that the transmission spectra in the visible range strongly change at varying concentrations of ethanol vapor. The fabricated structures show a linear optical response in the visible range, for high values of ethanol concentration.

Nonlinear Characterisation of an AsSe Chalcogenide Holey Fiber

2009

oral session TuA " Highly Nonlinear Fibers " [TuA1]; International audience; We report the nonlinear characterization of a chalcogenide holey fiber, based on the AsSe glass composition. A nonlinear coefficient as high as 15 000 W-1 km-1 has been measured.

Highly-sensitive anisotropic porous silicon based optical sensors

2012

The modeling, fabrication and characterization of PSi fabricated from both (110) and (100) surface oriented silicon for optical sensing is thoroughly reported. First, based on the generalized Bruggeman method, the birefringence and sensitivity of the fabricated membranes were calculated as a function of the fabrication parameters such as porosity and pore sizes; and external effects, such as the pores surface oxidation. Thereafter we report on the fabrication of PSi membranes from (110) and (100) surface oriented silicon with pore sizes in the range of 50 - 80 nm, and the characterization of their birefringence using a polarimetric setup. Their sensitivities were determined by filling the p…

High Sensitivity Refractive Index Sensor Based on Highly Overcoupled Tapered Fiber Optic Couplers

2017

In this paper, a simple and compact fiber-optic sensor based on an overcoupled tapered fiber coupler is studied. The coupler is fabricated to be operated well beyond the initial coupling cycles, where the rapid exchange of energy between outputs ports enable the fabrication of a highly sensitive device. The suitability and sensitivity of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by measuring refractive index (RI) variations of sugar concentrations in water. The device presents a linear response in terms of power transmission or wavelength shift versus RI changes. The best achieved sensitivity is 0.442 units of normalized transmission per unit of sugar concentration, with a noise detection limit o…

In-line fiber-optic sensors based on the excitation of surface plasma modes in metal-coated tapered fibers

2001

Abstract Metal-coated tapered fibers are reported as refractive index sensors based on the resonant excitation of surface plasma modes supported by the metal coating. The devices are easy to fabricate and constitute an alternative to metal-coated side-polished fibers and to other sensors made up of bulk components. We report the fabrication and power transmission properties of quasi-circular devices and asymmetric devices. Both sets of devices can be operated as wavelength output sensors, as well as amplitude output sensors. The transmittance of quasi-circular devices is polarization independent and it changes more than 30 dB as a function of external refractive index.

An Electrical Tuner to Command Optical NanoAntennas

2010

Optical antennas are passive device where fabrication designs decide operating frequency, gain and emission diagram. By introducing an electrically controllable load medium for the antenna, these characteristics can be externally controlled.

Integrated optic Surface Plasmon Resonance Measurements in Glass substrates

2007

The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique is an optical method that can be used to measure the refractive index of organic nano-layers adsorbed on a thin metal film. Although there are many techniques for measuring biomolecular interactions, SPR-based techniques play a central role in many current biosensing experiments, since they are most suited to sensitive and quantitative kinetic measurements. Here we give some results from the analysis and numerical elaboration of SPR data regarding the flow of different solutions with refractive indexes in the range of interest (1-1.4). After a brief discussion of the principles of SPR and of waveguide fabrication technique, we give a description…
