EEG Data Quality: Determinants and Impact in a Multicenter Study of Children, Adolescents, and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (…

2021

Electroencephalography (EEG) represents a widely established method for assessing altered and typically developing brain function. However, systematic studies on EEG data quality, its correlates, and consequences are scarce. To address this research gap, the current study focused on the percentage of artifact-free segments after standard EEG pre-processing as a data quality index. We analyzed participant-related and methodological influences, and validity by replicating landmark EEG effects. Further, effects of data quality on spectral power analyses beyond participant-related characteristics were explored. EEG data from a multicenter ADHD-cohort (age range 6 to 45 years), and a non-ADHD sc…

Haematological deficiencies in patients with recurrent aphthosis

2009

Background  Recurrent aphthosis is a common oral ulcerative condition consisting also of a subset of similar ulcers, properly named ‘aphthous-like’ ulcers (ALU), linked to systemic diseases and among these, to iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 deficiencies. Objectives  The main objectives of this study were: (i) to evaluate the association between recurrent aphthosis and the most common predisposing factors; (ii) to assess the frequency of ALU in recurrent aphthosis; (iii) to verify the efficacy of a replacement therapy in all ALU patients. Methods  Thirty-two adults with recurrent aphthosis and 29 otherwise healthy controls were consecutively recruited, interviewed and subjected to haematol…

Determinants of high-grade anal intraepithelial lesions in HIV-positive men having sex with men

2018

Background Identifying determinants for histologically proven high-grade anal intraepithelial lesions (hHSIL) in HIV-positive MSM would allow better targeted screening. Methods APACHES is a prospective study of anal HPV and related-lesions in 513 HIV-positive MSM aged ≥35 in six clinics across France. At baseline, participants underwent high resolution anoscopy (HRA) with biopsy of suspicious lesions, preceded by anal swabs for liquid-based cytology, p16/Ki67 immunostaining, and HPV DNA. hHSIL diagnosis was established by histopathological review panel consensus, and determinants assessed by logistic regression. Results Baseline hHSIL prevalence was 10.4% and did not differ significantly by…

Effects of indomethacin on muscarinic inhibition of endogenous noradrenaline release from rat isolated trachea

1993

The release of endogenous noradrenaline from rat isolated tracheae was evoked by electrical field stimulation (3 Hz, 540 pulses) in the presence of yohimbine, desipramine and tyrosine. The muscarine receptor agonist oxotremorine concentration-dependently inhibited the evoked release of noradrenaline by 95% at 1 μmol/l, EC50 values in two series of experiments 41 and 57 nmol/l, respectively. The effect of oxotremorine was antagonized by the non-selective muscarine receptor antagonist scopolamine (10–1000 nmol/l) in a manner suggesting a simple competitive interaction (slope of Schild plot −0.94; pA2 value 8.88). However, the M2 selective muscarine receptor antagonist methoctramine (0.1–10 μm…

Frequency and determinants for hemorrhagic transformation of posterior cerebral stroke : Posterior ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic transformation.

2017

BACKGROUND: hemorrhagic transformation is a threatening ischemic stroke complication. Frequency of hemorrhagic transformation differs greatly among studies, and its risk factors have been usually studied in patients with anterior ischemic stroke who received thrombolytic therapy. We evaluated, in a hospital-based series of patients with posterior ischemic stroke not treated with thrombolysis, frequency and risk factors of hemorrhagic transformation. Patients with posterior circulation stroke were seen in our Department during the period January 2004 to December 2009. Demographic and clinical information were collected. We estimated risk for spontaneous hemorrhagic transformation by means of…

Prevalence of xerostomia in patients attending Shorish dental speciality in Sulaimani city

2014

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of xerostomia among dental patients and explo - re the possible risk factors and symptoms associated with this condition. Study Design: The prevalence of xerostomia and its associations were investigated among patients (n=1132) who were visiting the department of oral medicine at shorish dental speciality in sulaimani city. The age range was bet - ween 10-79 years. 512 (45.2%) of participants were males and 620 (54.8%) were females. The data collected were age, sex, systemic diseases, medications and habit of smoking. Logistic regression models to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were used to investigate th…

Prevalence of Vertebral Fractures and Their Prognostic Significance in the Survival in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease Stages 3‒5 Not on Dialysis

2020

Background: The prevalence of vertebral fractures (VF) and their association with clinical risk factors and outcomes are poorly documented in chronic kidney disease (CKD) cohorts. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of VF in patients with non-dialysis dependent CKD (NDD-CKD), their value in predicting mortality and its correlation with parameters of bone mineral metabolism and vascular calcification. Materials and Methods: 612 NDD 3‒5 stage CKD patients participating in the OSERCE-2 study, a prospective, multicenter, cohort study, were prospectively evaluated and categorized into two groups according to presence or absence of VF at enrollment. VF were assessed with lateral r…

Predictive Score of Nodal Involvement in Endometrial Cancer Patients: A Large Multicentre Series

2021

Background: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is considered the standard of care in early-stage endometrial cancer (EC). For SLN failure, a side-specific lymphadenectomy is recommended. Nevertheless, most hemipelvises show no nodal involvement. The authors previously published a predictive score of lymphovascular involvement in EC. In case of a negative score (value 3–4), the risk of nodal metastases was extremely low. This multicenter study aimed to analyze a predictive score of nodal involvement in EC patients. Methods: The study enrolled patients with EC who had received comprehensive surgical staging with nodal assessment. A preoperative predictive score of nodal involvement was calculat…

Multimorbidity and anxiety symptoms among adults aged 50 years and over from six low- and middle-income countries

2021

Currently, there are limited data on the association between multimorbidity (i.e., ≥ 2 chronic conditions) and anxiety, especially among the older population in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Thus, the aim of the present study was to examine the association between multimorbidity and anxiety symptoms in a large sample of adults aged ≥ 50 years from six LMICs (China, India, Ghana, Mexico, Russia, South Africa). Cross-sectional, nationally representative, community-based data from the Study on Global Ageing and Adult Health (SAGE) were analysed. A total of 11 chronic physical conditions were assessed. Anxiety symptoms referred to extreme/severe problems with worry or anxiety in the…
