Critical points for nondifferentiable functions in presence of splitting

2006

A classical critical point theorem in presence of splitting established by Brézis-Nirenberg is extended to functionals which are the sum of a locally Lipschitz continuous term and of a convex, proper, lower semicontinuous function. The obtained result is then exploited to prove a multiplicity theorem for a family of elliptic variational-hemivariational eigenvalue problems. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Nonlinear Robin problems with unilateral constraints and dependence on the gradient

2018

We consider a nonlinear Robin problem driven by the p-Laplacian, with unilateral constraints and a reaction term depending also on the gradient (convection term). Using a topological approach based on fixed point theory (the Leray-Schauder alternative principle) and approximating the original problem using the Moreau-Yosida approximations of the subdifferential term, we prove the existence of a smooth solution.

Use of Guided Regularized Random Forest for Biophysical Parameter Retrieval

2018

This paper introduces a feature selection method based on random forest -the Guided Regularized Random Forest (GRRF)- which can be used in classification and regression tasks. The method is based on the regularization of the information gain in the random forest nodes to obtain a subset of relevant and non-redundant features. The proposed method is used as a preliminary step In the process of retrieving biophysical parameters from a hyperspectral image. Preliminary experiments show that we can reduce the RMSE of the retrievals by around 7% for the Leaf Area Index and around 8% for the fraction of vegetation cover when compared to the results using random forest features.

Some observations on the regularizing field for gradient damage models

2000

Gradient enhanced material models can potentially preserve well-posedness of incremental boundary value problems also after the onset of strain softening. Gradient dependent constitutive relations are rooted in the assumption that some scalar or tensor field, which appears in the yield function, has to be enriched by adding a term involving its second-order gradient field. For gradient-dependent plasticity this term is universally accepted to be the equivalent plastic strain. For gradient-dependent damage models different choices have been presented in the literature. They all possess the desired regularization of the solution, but they are not identical as regards the structural response. …

Aerobic fitness mediates the intervention effects of a school-based physical activity intervention on academic performance. The school in Motion stud…

2021

Highlights • Physical activity is associated with increased aerobic fitness and academic performance. • Little is known on mechanism of physical activity effects on academic performance. • We performed a cluster randomized controlled trial. • Aerobic fitness mediated the intervention effect on academic performance. • Activity increasing aerobic fitness is a strategy to improve academic performance.

Is the Spectacled WarblerSylvia conspicillataexpanding northward because of climate warming?

2014

Capsule The Spectacled Warbler shows a strictly Mediterranean distribution which is expected to expand northward in response to climate warming. To test this hypothesis, we defined the regular distribution of the species based on the literature and we tested whether: (1) spring temperatures in this area significantly increased between 1967 and 2010; (2) breeding attempts north of the regular range occurred progressively at northern latitudes. Both of these hypotheses were confirmed, supporting the hypothesis that the species is expanding northward because of climate warming.

El Derecho internacional de las migraciones: entre la crisis y la renovación

2019

The international migration regime currently in force is manifestly insufficient for the regulation and governance of migration flows. The irreducible collision between the right of persons to leave their country and the right of States to reject the admission of migrants in its territory has led, in practice, to a vicious circle resulting in an increase in irregular migration and the multiplication of dramatic situations that hurt humanitarian feelings. In view of this situation, the United Nations promoted the adoption in January of 2019 of two instruments seeking to establish a new framework for international cooperation in this field: a Global Compact on Refugees and a Global Compact on…

Positive solutions for parametric singular Dirichlet (p,q)-equations

2020

We consider a nonlinear elliptic Dirichlet problem driven by the (p,q)-Laplacian and a reaction consisting of a parametric singular term plus a Caratheodory perturbation f(z,x) which is (p-1)-linear as x goes to + infinity. First we prove a bifurcation-type theorem describing in an exact way the changes in the set of positive solutions as the parameter lambda>0 moves. Subsequently, we focus on the solution multifunction and prove its continuity properties. Finally we prove the existence of a smallest (minimal) solution u*_lambda and investigate the monotonicity and continuity properties of the map lambda --> u*_lambda.

A new species of Pythium with ornamented oogonia: morphology, taxonomy, internal transcribed spacer region of its ribosomal RNA, and its comparison w…

2006

Pythium spiculum sp. nov. was isolated from soil samples taken in a vineyard in the Burgundian region of France and from different locations in Spain and Portugal. The oomycete has spiny oogonia and does not sporulate readily. It resembles Pythium mamillatum Meurs, but has its own distinguishing characteristics. It also exhibits sickle-shaped as well as spherical appressoria which at times are associated with sex organs like those found in Pythium abappressorium Paulitz and Pythium contiguanum Paul. Sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer region of its nuclear ribosomal DNA and a close look at its morphological characters have now enabled us to describe it as a new species. The intern…
