Abstract Purpose To report the use of corneoscleral lenses (CSL) in keratoconus patients who were unsatisfied with their visual outcomes after keratoplasty surgery. Automated segmentation of changes in FLAIR-hyperintense white matter lesions in multiple sclerosis on serial magnetic resonance imaging

Longitudinal analysis of white matter lesion changes on serial MRI has become an important parameter to study diseases with white-matter lesions. Here, we build on earlier work on cross-sectional lesion segmentation; we present a fully automatic pipeline for serial analysis of FLAIR-hyperintense white matter lesions. Our algorithm requires three-dimensional gradient echo T1- and FLAIR- weighted images at 3 Tesla as well as available cross-sectional lesion segmentations of both time points. The effect of lifelong exercise on psychomotor reaction time: a study of 38 pairs of male monozygotic twins

Purpose: The aim was to study the effect of lifetime physical activity on psychomotor speed. Methods: Foot and dominant hand visual simple and choice psychomotor reaction times were studied among monozygotic twins (38 pairs) aged 35-69, discordant for lifetime exercise histories. Results: There was a trend that some components of psychomotor reaction time were faster for frequent than for occasional exercisers. but the findings were not consistent for the hand and feet. After controlling for occupational physical activity, only choice decision time for the hand (26 ms, P < 0.01) and choice reaction time for the contralateral foot (51 ms, P < 0.05) both remained 7% faster. The up-regulation of "tissue" transglutaminase (TG2) gene has been shown to occur in various pathologies and can lead to severe liver injury; however, its role in the onset of liver damage has not yet been clarified. To address this issue, we have used two experimental settings: carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced liver injury in wild-type and TG2 knockout mice; and liver biopsies obtained from a large cohort of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected patients. Mice lacking TG2 failed to clear the hepatic necrotic tissue formed in response to prolonged CCl(4) exposure (5 weeks) and 60% of them died before the end of the treatment.
