Sequence analysis of the DRB1 promoter reveals limited polymorphism with no influence on gene expression.

HLA-class II promoters contain a set of conserved regulatory regions necessary for constitutive and induced gene expression. For the HLA-DQB as well as for the DRB1 promoter sequence, polymorphisms with influence on gene expression have been reported. In contrast to these data we could show that there is very limited allele-specific polymorphism among the HLA-DRB1 promoter alleles. In a long range PCR we amplified a DNA sequence containing the promoter and the second exon of the DRB1 gene in one fragment. Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is a chronic, inflammatory disorder of unknown cause, almost exclusively occurring in people aged over 50 and often associated with giant cell arteritis. The evidence that PMR occurs almost exclusively in individuals aged over 50 may indicate that age-related immune alterations in genetically predisposed subjects contribute to development of the disease. Onion (Allium cepa L.) is an important bulb crop grown worldwide. Dormancy in bulbous plants is an important physiological state mainly regulated by a complex gene network that determines a stop of vegetative growth during unfavorable seasons. The essay criticizes some choices of the European legislator as they contrast with the objective of creating a single competitive market for pan-European individual pension products; the choices of the regulation on the protection of savers are also criticized, and finally the essay assume that as a consequence of the choices of the European legislator intermediaries will bear the costs of financial inclusion.

The cuticular hydrocarbons of the fourth-instar larvae of Culex pipiens aged one and six days were analysed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The effect of an insect growth regulator (halofenozide = RH-0345) on the cuticular hydrocarbons was evaluated using newly moulted fourth-instar larvae of C. pipiens, at the lethal concentrations (LC50 = 12.58 and LC90 = 28.58 mu g/l). A previous study revealed that RH-0345 is toxic to larvae of C. pipiens by induction of precocious larval moulting. The anti-viral type I interferon (IFN) response is initiated by the immediate induction of IFN beta, which is mainly controlled by the IFN-regulatory factor-3 (IRF-3). The signaling pathways mediating viral IRF-3 activation are only poorly defined. We show that the Rho GTPase Rac1 is activated upon virus infection and controls IRF-3 phosphorylation and activity. Inhibition of Rac1 leads to reduced IFN beta promoter activity and to enhanced virus production. As a downstream mediator of Rac signaling towards IRF-3, we have identified the kinase p21-activated kinase (PAK1).
