Spectroscopic studies of the(4)1Σ+state of RbCs and modeling of the optical cycle for ultracoldX 1Σ+(v=0,J=0)molecule production

2013

We performed high-resolution Fourier-transform spectroscopy measurements and direct-potential-fit of the shelflike RbCs $(4){\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{1}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ state. Overall, 2317 rovibronic ${v}^{\ensuremath{'}},{J}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ term values with ${v}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\in}[3,88]$, ${J}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\in}[7,276]$ were obtained with accuracy 0.01 cm${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ from the $(4){\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{1}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}X{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{1}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+},a{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{3}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra. Atomic transition probabilities of F I spectral lines from3s−3pand3p−3dtransition arrays

1999

We have measured the relative transition probabilities of about $100 3s\ensuremath{-}3p$ and $3p\ensuremath{-}3d$ lines of neutral fluorine in the visible and near-infrared spectrum with a wall-stabilized high-current arc, which is operated under conditions very close to partial local thermodynamic equilibrium. The set of measured lines includes about 40 intersystem transitions. Our data have been placed on an absolute scale by normalizing several strong transitions to the results of the OPACITY Project calculations, which are expected to be quite accurate for such transitions. We estimate that the uncertainties of our absolute transition probability values are in the \ifmmode\pm\else\textp…

On the angular momentum transfer on to compact stars in binary systems

2001

Results of three-dimensional numerical simulations of the gas transfer in close binary systems show that, in addition to the formation of a tidally induced spiral shock wave, it is also possible for accretion streams to be produced, having low specific angular momentum in a region close to the accreting star. These streams are mainly placed above the orbital disc but are also unevenly present in the equatorial plane. The relevance of such flows is related to formation of hot coronae or bulges in regions very close to the accretor centre. The eventual formation of such bulges and shock-heated flows is interesting in the context of advection-dominated solutions and for the explanation of spec…

Dynamics of oscillating relativistic tori around Kerr black holes

2004

We present a comprehensive numerical study of the dynamics of relativistic axisymmetric accretion tori with a power-law distribution of specific angular momentum orbiting in the background spacetime of a Kerr black hole. By combining general relativistic hydrodynamics simulations with a linear perturbative approach we investigate the main dynamical properties of these objects over a large parameter space. The astrophysical implications of our results extend and improve two interesting results that have been recently reported in the literature. Firstly, the induced quasi-periodic variation of the mass quadrupole moment makes relativistic tori of nuclear matter densities, as those formed duri…

Local-porosity theory for flow in porous media

1992

A recently introduced geometric characterization of porous media based on local-porosity distributions and local-percolation probabilities is used to calculate dc permeabilities for porous media. The disorder in porous media is found to be intimately related to the percolation concept. The geometric characterization is shown to open a possibility for understanding experimentally observed scaling relations between permeability, formation factor, specific internal surface, and porosity. In particular, Kozeny's equation k\ensuremath{\propto}\ensuremath{\varphi}\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} $^{\mathit{b}}$ between effective permeability and bulk porosity and the relation k\ensuremath{\…

Non-local stiffness and damping models for shear-deformable beams

2013

This paper presents the dynamics of a non-local Timoshenko beam. The key assumption involves modeling non-local effects as long-range volume forces and moments mutually exerted by non-adjacent beam segments, that contribute to the equilibrium of any beam segment along with the classical local stress resultants. Elastic and viscous long-range volume forces/moments are endowed in the model. They are built as linearly depending on the product of the volumes of the interacting beam segments and on generalized measures of their relative motion, based on the pure deformation modes of the beam. Attenuation functions governing the space decay of the non-local effects are introduced. Numerical resul…

Dynamics of magnetized relativistic tori oscillating around black holes

2007

We present a numerical study of the dynamics of magnetized, relativistic, non-self-gravitating, axisymmetric tori orbiting in the background spacetimes of Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes. The initial models have a constant specific angular momentum and are built with a non-zero toroidal magnetic field component, for which equilibrium configurations have recently been obtained. In this work we extend our previous investigations which dealt with purely hydrodynamical thick discs, and study the dynamics of magnetized tori subject to perturbations which, for the values of the magnetic field strength considered here, trigger quasi-periodic oscillations lasting for tens of orbital periods. Ove…

The XMM-Newton survey of the ELAIS-S1 field

2006

We have surveyed with XMM-Newton the central ~0.6 deg2 region of the ELAIS-S1 field down to flux limits of ~5.5X10-16 cgs (0.5-2 keV, S band), ~2X10-15 cgs (2-10 keV, H band), and ~4X10-15 cgs (5-10 keV, HH band). We detect a total of 478 sources, 395 and 205 of which detected in the S and H bands respectively. We identified 7 clearly extended sources and estimated their redshift through X-ray spectral fits with thermal models. In four cases the redshift is consistent with z=0.4. We have computed the angular correlation function of the sources in the S and H bands, finding best fit correlation angles theta_0=5.2+/-3.8 arcsec and theta_0=12.8+/-7.8 arcsec respectively. A rough estimate of th…

Technical note: Monte Carlo derivation of TG-43 dosimetric parameters for radiation therapy resources and 3M Cs-137 sources

2005

In clinical brachytherapy dosimetry, a detailed dose rate distribution of the radioactive source in water is needed in order to plan for quality treatment. Two Cs-137 sources are considered in this study; the Radiation Therapy Resources 67-800 source (Radiation Therapy Resources Inc., Valencia, CA) and the 3M model 6500/6D6C source. A complete dosimetric dataset for both sources has been obtained by means of the Monte Carlo GEANT4 code. Dose rate distributions are presented in two different ways; following the TG43 formalism and in a 2D rectangular dose rate table. This 2D dose rate table is helpful for the TPS quality control and is fully consistent with the TG43 dose calculation formalism…
