The HER-2/neu oncoprotein, a 185 kDa membrane-associated tyrosine kinase with extensive homology to the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-R), is overexpressed in breast and ovarian carcinomas. Its overexpression is closely associated with poor prognosis in the course of disease. Here we demonstrate HER-2/neu overexpression in both established cell lines and biopsy material obtained from renal epithelial tumors. Karyotype analysis and marker chromosomes of renal cell carcinoma.

Karyotyping was performed in 46 human renal cell carcinomas of various histological grades. Controls included chromosome analysis of normal renal parenchymal cells from the same patients. Various numerical chromosome aberrations were found as well as marker chromosomes. They are specific of the individual tumor but no single marker was identified occurring in all tumors tested. Only trisomy 3 was found in different tumors (31%), suggesting a more general character of this aberration. Three Bellini duct carcinomas (BDC) of the kidney were cytogenetically analyzed after short-term culture. All three had clonal chromosome abnormalities: 91-92,XXY,-Y, +12, +12, -15, -16, -18, +mar (case 1); 53,XY, +2,t(2;7)(p22;q11), +der (2)t (2;7)(p22;q11), +3, +r(3),add(5)(p15), +7, -8, +12, +17, +r(17), +20, -21 (case 2); and 44-47,X,-Y, +9, +16, -21/46,XY. Some of the numerical abnormalities are shared with papillary renal cell carcinomas (PRCC)(+7, +12, +16, +17, and +20) but not with transitional renal cell carcinomas. The present findings support the previous notion that BDC are different from other types of RCC.

OBJECTIVE To assess the practicability and efficacy of systematic screening for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) by ultrasonography (US), as more small RCCs are being detected incidentally by US. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A 2-year screening programme for RCC was established for the general population (aged ≥ 40 years) in two German cities, Mainz and Wuppertal.
