How acute physical and psychological stress differentially influence the kynurenine pathway: A randomized cross-over trial.

Abstract Psychological stress is associated with the pathogenesis of several neuropsychiatric disorders. In contrast, physical stress, as provoked by exercise, counteracts symptoms and potentially also disease progression. The kynurenine pathway, which is imbalanced in neuropsychiatric disorders, responds to both psychological and physical stress. Here, we compared the acute effects of psychological versus physical stress on the kynurenine pathway and inflammatory mediators. In vivo antihypertensive mechanism of lactoferrin-derived peptides: Reversion of angiotensin I- and angiotensin II-induced hypertension in Wistar rats

Novel peptides with antihypertensive effects in SHR rats have previously been identified in lactoferrin (LF) hydrolysates. To investigate their in vivo antihypertensive mechanism, we have assessed the blood pressure lowering effects of two of these LF-derived peptides (RPYL and DPYKLRP) in Wistar rats subjected to either angiotensin I- or angiotensin II-induced hypertension. Blood pressure was measured by the tail-cuff method, hypertension was induced by subcutaneous infusion of angiotensins, and then captopril, valsartan or LF-derived peptides orally administered. Nitric oxide (NO), the smallest signalling molecule known, is produced by three isoforms of NO synthase (NOS; EC 1.14.13.39). They all utilize l-arginine and molecular oxygen as substrates and require the cofactors reduced nicotinamide-adenine-dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH), flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), flavin mononucleotide (FMN), and (6R-)5,6,7,8-tetrahydrobiopterin (BH(4)). It is well-recognized that exercise improves mental health, e.g., by decreasing depressive behaviors, improving hippocampal-dependent learning and neurogenesis, and increasing dendritic plasticity. Sympathetic Overactivity and 24-Hour Blood Pressure Pattern in Hypertensives with Chronic Renal Failure

In order to assess the activity of the sympathetic system and to evaluate the 24-h blood pressure pattern in hypertensives with chronic renal failure (CRF), 12 CRF patients and 16 essential hypertensives (EHs) were studied. In all subjects, plasma samples for catecholamines and renin activity were obtained both in the basal condition and after standing, and 24-h blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) was performed. The 24-h mean blood pressure results were quite similar between CRFs and EHs. In 50% of the CRFs, ABPM showed a nighttime decrease in diastolic BP (DBP) greater than 10%, while in the remaining 50% the ABPM indicated a nondipper blood pressure pattern.
