Indikationen zur konventionellen Adrenalektomie

2008

INTRODUCTION: Conventional adrenalectomy still plays an important role, even in the era of minimally invasive endocrine surgery. It was the aim of our study to analyse the indications for conventional adrenalectomy in our own patients since the introduction of the minimally invasive technique in the year 1994 - laparoscopically and retroperitoneoscopically. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between January 1994 and September 2006, a total of 412 adrenalectomies were performed in 380 patients. Out of these, 106 operations (25.7 %) were carried out conventionally in 98 patients, and 306 operations (74.3 %) endoscopically in 282 patients. RESULTS: Indications for conventional adrenalectomy were - as compa…

Suspension feeding of anuran larvae at low concentrations of Chlorella algae (Amphibia, Anura).

1990

Ingestion and filtering rates in larval Xenopus laevis, Bufo calamita, Rana temporia and Bufo bufo fed suspensions of Chlorella fusca were investigated. Concentrations were measured with a Coulter Counter. (1) For all species, filtration occurred at concentrations far below those reported by other authors for Rana sylvatica feeding on Chlorella pyrenoidosa. For Bufo bufo, only larvae near metamorphosis showed ingestion at low particle concentrations. Since buccopharyngeal ventilation continues even in the absence of food particles, this threshold feeding behaviour in the younger larvae must be due to different mechanisms to those found in Daphnia and Calanus studied by other authors: probab…

Strain induced renormalization of transport properties in UPt3 thin films

1996

The growth of sputter deposited UPt3 thin films on Al2O3 (1012), LaAlO3 (111) and SrTiO3 (111) was investigated. We found strongly 0001-textured growth of UPt3 in a small compositional range of 23–25% uranium content. For Al2O3-and LaAlO3-substrates no in-plane order could be observed whereas epitaxial growth was initiated on SrTiO3 (111): The growth can be identified as Vollmer-Weber like resulting in the formation of large lateral strain as a consequence of the growth mode and a lattice misfit of −4.3% between UPt3 (0001) and SrTiO3 (111). Strong deviations from the typical heavy-fermion characteristics in electronic transport properties like resistivity, magnetoresitivity and Hall-effect…

Construction of Whiteness and Blackness in Herman Melville’s Benito Cereno

2020

Rather than resist slavery directly, the narrative world of Benito Cereno disperses the rejection of tyranny through the intricate construction of subject-object relations, the situational context, Benito Cereno’s stifled, semi-articulated statements, the imagery of the narrative and its complex narrative structure. Through silences, multiple viewpoints, innuendos, refusal to solve certain issues definitely while being explicit about this indeterminacy, Melville’s narrative not only inscribes itself in the Romantic questioning of historiography, but also gestures towards postmodernist inconclusiveness and the writerly text in which the reader is invited to be its co-author who fills out the…

"La viuda, casada y doncella", de Lope, fuente de "La desdicha en la constancia", novela corta bizantina de Miguel Moreno (con unas notas sobre "La C…

2019

This article examines La desdicha en la constancia, a short novel by Miguel Moreno published in 1624. Firstly, I place the text in its context as a tragic Byzantine novella. Secondly, I shed light on some similarities between Moreno’s work and La viuda, casada y doncella by Lope de Vega, written in 1597 and included in the Parte VII (1617). Having studied their respective plots and their historical and literary backgrounds, it is my contention that Moreno composed his novel drawing on Lope’s play. Thus, I also analyse how he may have had access to this play. Finally, I explore the common ground between La desdicha en la constancia and the novels published by Lope in La Circe (1624), which s…

Prevention of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

2005

The accuracy and the reliability of well-recognized clinical, virologic, histologic, and molecular risk factors for HCC are still insufficient; thus, accurate risk prediction of developing cancer in individual patients remains an elusive goal. Future directions in chemprevention of HCC will be on the development of molecular risk models and of new chemopreventive agents. The design of targeted molecular therapies may need to be tailored to the specific molecular phenotype of a specific HCC. Studies examining multiple genes and proteins (genomics and proteomics) in the same HCCs will be required to evaluate this possibility thoroughly. In the setting of primary prevention, the epidemiologic …

Clinical Utility of Midregional Proadrenomedullin in Patients with COVID-19

2021

Abstract Objective The aim of the study was to assess the role of midregional proadrenomedullin (MR-proADM) in patients with COVID-19. Methods We included 110 patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Biochemical biomarkers, including MR-proADM, were measured at admission. The association of plasma MR-proADM levels with COVID-19 severity, defined as a requirement for mechanical ventilation or in-hospital mortality, was evaluated. Results Patients showed increased levels of MR-proADM. In addition, MR-proADM was higher in patients who died during hospitalization than in patients who survived (median, 2.59 nmol/L; interquartile range, 2.3–2.95 vs median, 0.82 nmol/L; interquartile range, 0.57–1.03; …

a1D-Adrenoceptors are responsible for the high sensitivity and the slow time-course of noradrenaline-mediated contraction in conductance arteries.

2013

The objective of this study was to determine whether the different time-course characteristics of α1-adrenoceptor-mediated contraction in arteries can be related to the subtypes involved. Contractile responses to noradrenaline (NA) were compared with inositol phosphate accumulation and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)1/2 phosphorylation after α1-agonist stimuli in the same vessels in the presence or absence of α1-antagonists in rat or in α1-subtype knockout (KO) mice. Aorta, where α1D-AR is the main functional subtype, had higher sensitivity to NA (in respect of inositol phosphate [IP], pERK1/2, and contractile response) than tail artery, where the α1A-adrenoceptor subtype is pre…

The Inflammatory Response in Acyl-CoA Oxidase 1 Deficiency (Pseudoneonatal Adrenoleukodystrophy)

2012

Among several peroxisomal neurodegenerative disorders, the pseudoneonatal adrenoleukodystrophy (P-NALD) is characterized by the acyl-coenzyme A oxidase 1 (ACOX1) deficiency, which leads to the accumulation of very-long-chain fatty acids ( VLCFA) and inflammatory demyelination. However, the components of this inflammatory process in P-NALD remain elusive. In this study, we used transcriptomic profiling and PCR array analyses to explore inflammatory gene expression in patient fibroblasts. Our results show the activation of IL-1 inflammatory pathway accompanied by the increased secretion of two IL-1 target genes, IL-6 and IL-8 cytokines. Human fibroblasts exposed to very-long-chain fatty acids…
