The measurement of light transmission through an irradiated fluidised bed

Abstract The transmission of light through an irradiated fluidised bed with vertical flat walls containing catalytic particles has been experimentally studied. The amount of light transmitted through the reactor was measured at different levels by a photocell. The experimental variables studied included: (i) gas flow rate, varying from 2 to more than 10 times that required for minimum fluidisation; (ii) mean particle size, ranging from 0.138 to 0.275 mm; and (iii) internal bed thickness from 2.1 to 4.9 mm. Design optimization for the quench protection of DTT's superconducting toroidal field magnets

Abstract The paper is focused on the optimal design of Fast Discharge Unit (FDU) for the quench protection of the Toroidal Field (TF) magnets of the Divertor Tokamak Test facility (DTT), an experimental facility under construction in ENEA Frascati Research Centre (Rome, Italy). The FDU is a safety key component that protects the superconducting magnets when a quench is detected through the fast extraction of the energy stored in the magnets by adding a discharge dump resistor (DR) in the TF magnets circuit. [EN] We present the concept of logic functions based on a single stimuli-responsive nanopore and analyze its potential for electrochemical transducers and actuators. The responsive molecules at the surface of the polymeric nanopore immersed in an electrolyte solution are sensitive to thermal, chemical, electrical, and optical stimuli, which are the input signals required to externally tune the conductance of the nanopore (the logical output). Lumped parameter approach of nonlinear networks with transistors

In this chapter we study the lumped parameter modelling of a large class of circuits composed of bipolar transistors, junction diodes and passive elements (resistors, capacitors, inductors). All these elements are nonlinear: the semiconductor components are modelled by “large signal” equivalent schemes, the capacitors and inductors have monotone characteristics while the resistors can be included in a multiport which also has a monotone description.

SnO2 : Sb - A new material for high-temperature MEMS heater applications: Performance and limitations

MEMS micro heater devices capable of long-term operation at temperatures up to 1000 degrees C are presented. The enhanced long-term stability has been achieved by employing antimony-doped tin oxide (SnO2:Sb) as a substitute for the conventionally used noble metal heater resistors. A detailed investigation of its high-temperature stability reveals that degradation is caused by out-diffusion of Sb impurities from the SnO2 film. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Voltage-controlled current loops with nanofluidic diodes electrically coupled to solid state capacitors

[EN] We describe experimentally and theoretically voltage-controlled current loops obtained with nanofluidic diodes immersed in aqueous salt solutions. The coupling of these soft matter diodes with conventional electronic elements such as capacitors permits simple equivalent circuits which show electrical properties reminiscent of a resistor with memory. Modulation of the organic heterojunction behavior, from electrografting to enhanced sensing properties

International audience; The energy barrier of an organic heterojunction built on ITO electrodes and made from a low conductive sublayer (Cu(F16Pc)) covered by a highly conductive semiconductor (LuPc2) is modulated by electrografting of organic layers before depositing the sublayer. Impedance spectroscopy clearly demonstrates the increase of the energy barrier at the ITO – sublayer interface. Additionally, the electrografting is a versatile and promising method for the tuning of heterojunctions. The I(V) characteristics of the heterojunctions are highly modified by the electrografting. Strain Measurement on Composites: Errors due to Rosette Misalignment

Electrical resistance strain gauges are increasingly used for the determination of the strain field in composite components. The effect of the angular misalignment of a strain gauge rosette on the determination of the strains in a composite material is investigated in this paper. The theoretical analysis shows that the strain error along the principal material directions depends on the difference of principal strains, on the angular misalignment of the rosette and on the angle between the maximum principal strain and the fibre direction. The paper also shows experimental evidence for the theoretical analysis.
Characterization of SiPM properties at liquid nitrogen temperature

SiPM operation at cryogenic temperatures fails for many common devices. A particular type with deep channels in the silicon substrate instead of quenching resistors was thoroughly characterized from room temperature down to liquid nitrogen temperature by illuminating it with low light levels. The devices were mounted in vacuum with the temperature stabilized to allow long-term operation. SiPM signals from a LED pulser were acquired with single-pixel resolution. Generalized fits to the charge collection spectra were used to extract properties like single-pixel gain, inter-pixel variation, breakdown voltage, and photon detection efficiency.
