Das neurogene Lungenödem
1997
Prevalence and 30-Day Mortality in Hospitalized Patients With Covid-19 and Prior Lung Diseases.
2021
Patients with pre-existing respiratory diseases in the setting of COVID-19 may have a greater risk of severe complications and even death.A retrospective, multicenter, cohort study with 5847 COVID-19 patients admitted to hospitals. Patients were separated in two groups, with/without previous lung disease. Evaluation of factors associated with survival and secondary composite end-point such as ICU admission and respiratory support, were explored.1,271 patients (22%) had a previous lung disease, mostly COPD. All-cause mortality occurred in 376 patients with lung disease (29.5%) and in 819 patients without (17.9%) (Previous lung disease is a risk factor for mortality in patients with COVID-19.…
The role of small airways in monitoring the response to asthma treatment: what is beyond FEV1?
2009
The definition of asthma has evolved from that of an episodic disease characterized by reversible airways constriction to a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways, with at least partially reversible airway constriction. Increasing evidence supports the notion that small and large airways play a central role in asthma pathophysiology with regard to inflammation, remodeling and symptoms. The contribution of the distal airways to the asthma phenotype carries implications for the delivery of inhaled medications to the appropriate areas of the lung and for the monitoring of the response to asthma treatment. Asthma control is evaluated on the basis of symptoms, lung function and exacerbation…
Auswirkungen der Sauerstoffinhalation auf die Hämodynamik bei chronischer thromboembolischer pulmonaler Hypertonie
1998
PURPOSE This study evaluates the haemodynamic effects of oxygen inhalation on pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. METHOD In 47 patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension haemodynamic parameters were measured before and after oxygen inhalation. RESULTS In moderately severe and severe pulmonary hypertension oxygen inhalation significantly reduced mean pulmonary artery pressure by about 11.1% and 4.6%, respectively. However, pulmonary vascular resistance was not significantly affected. Oxygen saturation improved and heart rate was reduced. Cardiac index decreased in severe pulmonary hyperte…
Biochemical biomarkers alterations in Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)
2020
Abstract Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a respiratory disease, which can evolve into multi-organ failure (MOF), leading to death. Several biochemical alterations have been described in COVID-19 patients. To date, many biomarkers reflecting the main pathophysiological characteristics of the disease have been identified and associated with the risk of developing severe disease. Lymphopenia represents the hallmark of the disease, and it can be detected since the early stage of infection. Increased levels of several inflammatory biomarkers, including c-reactive protein, have been found in COVID-19 patients and associ…

Contrast-enhanced MRI of the lung
2000
The lung has long been neglected by MR imaging. This is due to unique intrinsic difficulties: (1) signal loss due to cardiac pulsation and respiration; (2) susceptibility artifacts caused by multiple air-tissue interfaces; (3) low proton density. There are many MR strategies to overcome these problems. They consist of breath-hold imaging, respiratory and cardiac gating procedures, use of short repetition and echo times, increase of the relaxivity of existing spins by administration of intravenous contrast agents, and enrichment of spin density by hyperpolarized noble gases or oxygen. Improvements in scanner performance and frequent use of contrast media have increased the interest in MR ima…
Clinical Utility of Midregional Proadrenomedullin in Patients with COVID-19
2021
Abstract Objective The aim of the study was to assess the role of midregional proadrenomedullin (MR-proADM) in patients with COVID-19. Methods We included 110 patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Biochemical biomarkers, including MR-proADM, were measured at admission. The association of plasma MR-proADM levels with COVID-19 severity, defined as a requirement for mechanical ventilation or in-hospital mortality, was evaluated. Results Patients showed increased levels of MR-proADM. In addition, MR-proADM was higher in patients who died during hospitalization than in patients who survived (median, 2.59 nmol/L; interquartile range, 2.3–2.95 vs median, 0.82 nmol/L; interquartile range, 0.57–1.03; …
