Secon…
A Double-Hurdle model of urban green areas valuation: Dealing with zero responses
2008
Due to the widespread support for public parks and open spaces in urban areas, there is an increasing need to analyse the social benefits that are generated by such amenities. The city of Valencia (Spain) has a large park that can be considered its green backbone due to its transversal layout running along 9 of the 19 districts into which the city is divided. A contingent valuation survey was therefore conducted in order to obtain the non-market benefits derived from the use of this park by the inhabitants of Valencia. In addition, to deal with the large number of zero responses obtained, a Double-Hurdle model was applied. The results show that this model is more appropriate than other, sim…
The Visual Quality of Urban Park Scenes of Kowloon Park, Hong Kong: Likeability, Affective Appraisal, and Cross-Cultural Perspectives
2005
The urban park is a place where urbanites can escape from the stresses of everyday life. Using a set of fifteen photographs as visual stimuli, we attempted to identify those scenes that are liked by visitors to Kowloon Park, Hong Kong. The visual quality of an urban park scene is measured by its likeability, referring to the probability that the scene will evoke a strong and positive response among the users of the park. Because Hong Kong is an international metropolis, the respondent sample included both Hong Kong residents and tourists. The principal component analysis revealed the three underlying ‘dimensions’ of the appraisal aspects of the data: the ‘affective’ component, the ‘managem…
Aptiekā pieejamie D vitamīna uztura bagātinātāji, to lietošana atkarībā no sezonas, to cenu ietekme uz preparātu izvēli
2022
Factors associated with innovative climate: what is the role of stress?
1999
We explored the role of occupational stress as a potential determinant of innovative climate by using samples of employees from health care organizations and from enterprises in the metal and retail industries (total N=1767). Factor analyses of the responses to a questionnaire suggested that stress represents a distinguishable element independent of other correlates of innovative climate, including, for example, goal clarity, sufficiency of feedback and communication. In multiple regression analyses, high stress was associated with poor innovative climate but did not moderate the effects of other correlates on innovativeness. The results were reproduced across different samples and differen…
Employee Recruitment: Identifying Response Distortion on the Personality Measure
2015
The aim of this study was to identify individuals who fake their response on personality assessments in the context of employee recruitment. In the study experiment, participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group was instructed to complete a measure (BFI-44) honestly while the second group was instructed to complete the inventory as if they were job applicants participating in an employee recruitment. It was hoped that the second group would be induced to give fake responses. Cluster analysis and latent class analysis for a two-class constrained model was applied to and fitted to the data. The correlation between actual group (honest vs. faking) and predicted group obta…
Reporting in Conflict Zones in Pakistan: Risks and Challenges for Fixers
2020
As a backbone of reporting in war and conflicts, fixers offer essential assistance to the foreign correspondent in conflict zones, also in Pakistan. With valuable local knowledge and contacts, fixers can arrange travel to secure entry of foreign correspondents into conflict zones in addition to securing interviews with otherwise unattainable figures, while offering reliable translation services. Pakistani media, despite being one of the largest and most developed in South Asia, remains under the strict control of powerful military establishment and government, while seeming to mirror the overarching government sentiment with a distinct lack of research-based news. Challenging this state of …
Postoperative education concerning the use of the upper limb, and exercise and treatment of the upper limb: cross-sectional survey of 105 breast canc…
2003
In this retrospective survey we investigated the recall of breast cancer patients (n=105) 6 months after the operation concerning postoperative instructions on exercises for shoulder mobility, and instructions for oedema prevention and treatment, upper limb strength training and the use of the upper limb in daily activities. Patients also described the content in their own words and ranked the instructors who had mostly given this education. Operation type and length of hospital stay did not have any effect on the education recalled, but the age of the respondent had some effect (r=−0.23, p<0.05). The Wilcoxon signed ranks test showed that the most commonly reported item was instructions on…
