La Gramatica de la Lengua Vulgar de España (Lovaina, 1559), ¿anónima?

2021

Presocratic discourse in poetry and prose: The case of Empedocles and Anaxagoras

2012

Abstract This paper explores the differences between poetry and prose in philosophical writing by examining two Pre-Socratic fragments, one in verse and one in prose, that express a very similar thought: Empedocles 59 B 17 Diels/Kranz and Anaxagoras 31 B 8 D./K. Although at first it might seem as though there is a simple division between Empedocles’ opaque and allusive hexameters and Anaxagoras’ sober prose, when we look in detail at the language used by the two authors, a close reading of the passages reveals a more complex picture. Both authors place rhetorical emphasis on their own role as innovator; Anaxagoras’ prose shows a careful attention to style and word choice no less than Empedo…

2018

The sirventes of the troubadour era has been broadly studied, but there are not overall explanations concerning the evolution of the sirventes genre in the Catalan-speaking lands of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. This paper propounds a catalogue of sirventesos concerning its historical development, the troubadour models, rhetorical and grammatical treatises, and genre assignment in rubrics. Our catalogue contains thirty-one Catalan sirventesos , including twenty-eight extant items and three items lost. In some cases the literary motifs of the sirventes cross boundaries in a process of poetic hybridization with other moral genres which borrow out themes, images and rhetorical strate…

From “friends” to “patrons”

2009

In this article, we examine a period when Sweden took a leap from a locally-oriented power structure to a more centralised state. This meant a profound social change. We concentrate on the connection between changes in rhetoric and changes in society that took place in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Our point of departure is that, in rhetoric, there occurred a shift in balance from the rhetoric of friendship to the rhetoric of patronage. In the context of Sweden and Finland, we discuss whether this was linked to changes in administration and in the social order as a whole. Were there any real changes behind this rhetorical transition? Our source material provides a glimpse into wh…

Viva voce: Voice and Voicelessness among Twelfth-Century Clerics

2015

Writing in his Summa on Gratian’s Decretum1 toward 1164, canonist Rufinus of Bologna2 evokes criminal prelates, saying, “vocem accusandi, reprehendi, docendi non habent” (they do not have a voice to accuse, punish, teach).3 Should this enumeration be understood as a commonplace statement about three possible functions of the voice, or should we suspect a set of deeper associations? Is Rufinus’s use of the word “voice” simply an alternative to other rhetorical or stylistic possibilities—such as the word “word” in particular—or is it truly a deliberate choice on the part of the canonist?

Employee Rhetoric in the Acceptance or Rejection of Corporate Environmentalism

2016

This study explores how employees in a Finnish financial company use rhetorical strategies to accept or reject corporate environmentalism. It is based on a qualitative study in which face-to-face interviews were conducted among 30 employees. The study shows how employees rejected corporate environmentalism by dissociating their employer from polluters or by dissociating environmental values from other values in the financial business. It also shows how they accepted corporate environmentalism by associating it with other business virtues and by associating the employer with polluters. The study identifies rhetorical strategies as a means for employees to construct an understanding of corpor…

Rhetoric and Pragmatics: Suggestions for a Fruitful Dialogue

2013

The aim of this paper is to show that classical rhetoric can provide valuable insights in the contemporary debate in pragmatics. This is especially true for Aristotelian rhetoric, due to its philosophical approach. In the first part of the paper, I discusses the conditions under which ancient rhetoric can be a real partner of current pragmatics: (1) rhetoric must be understood as a type of knowledge (a techne) and not as a “jumbles of techniques”; (2) we need to consider persuasion as an anthropological feature and not only as a specific case of communication; (3) we should not exclude truth from the rhetorical field. The second part of the paper focuses on what can be considered the basic …

The Third Meaning Squared. Kinekphrasis in Contemporary Finnish Poetry
In this article I develop the concept of kinekphrasis to designate a particular form of intermediality, speci cally, the verbal representation of cinema or other form of moving image. Kinekphrasis builds upon ekphrasis, the classical rhetorical term that today generally refers to texts about static artworks, such as paintings and statues. Representing the medial complex of cinema, however, sets a distinct sensorial and semiotic challenge to a text and brings about a form of intermediality di erent from the traditional ekphrasis. I exemplify kinekphrasis with a reading of contemporary Finnish poetry, namely, individ…
