Quantification of rifampicin and rifabutin in plasma of tuberculosis patients by micellar liquid chromatography

2020

A Micellar Liquid Chromatographic method is described to determine Rifampicin and Rifabutin in plasma from Tuberculosis patients. Samples were diluted in mobile phase and then directly injected, avoiding long and tedious extraction steps. The analytes were resolved from the matrix without interferences from endogenous compounds using a mobile phase of sodium dodecyl sulfate 0.15 mol L-1–6%(v/v) 1-pentanol and phosphate buffer at pH 3, running at 1 mL min−1 through a C18 column at 25 °C. Detection was carried out by UV absorbance at 270 nm. Under these conditions, the final chromatographic analysis time was 22 min. The analytical methodology was validated following the FDA 2018 Bioanalytical…

Severe tuberculous meningoencephalitis in a 30-year old woman with active systemic lupus erythematosus.

1997

Tuberculosis is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromising diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It often is difficult to distinguish between central nervous system (CNS) involvement and infectious complications in SLE. We report the case of a 30-year-old woman with active SLE and severe tuberculous meningoencephalitis. The diagnosis of tuberculous meningoencephalitis was confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid culture examination, which revealed mycobacterium tuberculosis and typical findings for tuberculous meningoencephalitis on magnetic resonance imaging. Despite treatment with isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, streptomycin, and prednisone, the patient…

Enfermedad del legionario con afectación hepática predominante

2002

Like other pneumonias due to atypical agents, pneumonia due to Legionela Pneumophila has no characteristic clinical facts, although fever and non-productive cough are almost constant and diarrhea with changes in mental status are common. Hyponatremia and moderate transient hypertransaminasemia are common too. Severe systemic affectation after hematogenous dissemination similar to those described with typical bacterial pneumonias is a prominent difference with other atypical agents, with high mortality rates in the absence of appropriate treatment. Etiological diagnosis is very difficult and it is normally achieved late in the course of the infection. Because of diagnostic difficulties and p…

A case of severe repeated immunological reactions to intermittent rifampicin treatment

1972

A case is reported in which a 36-year-old patient twice suffered a rapidly-developing severe reaction to intermittent rifampicin therapy. The symptoms were upper abdominal and back pain, nausea and shivering. Acute renal failure, thrombocytopenia, jaundice and haemolytic anaemia also developed. Aetiologically this was due to an immunopathological effect. This case was unusual in that all the previously observed reactions to rifampicin of an immunological aetiology occurred together, resulting in a marked leucocytosis with the presence of immature cells. It appears that the immediate administration of high-dose corticosteroids can favourably influence this condition. We consider that despite…

Tuberculosis Following Lung Transplantation. A 27-Year Spanish Multicenter Experience. Incidence, Presentation, Prevention and Treatment with Rifampi…

2020

Abstract Background Tuberculosis (TB) represents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for solid organ transplant recipients, particularly after lung transplant (LT). Our aim was to determine the impact of TB in LT patients in Spain, considering prevalence, clinical presentation, prevention and therapeutic management. In addition, differences in outcome between rifampicin (RIF) versus non-RIF containing regimens were analyzed. Methods Multicenter, observational retrospective study, including all cases of TB diagnosed in recipients after LT, in five pulmonary transplant units in Spain, between January 1990 and December 2017. Results Among 2962 LT recipients, 45 cases of TB were diagnosed, r…

A Silicone Ventricular Catheter Coated with a Combination of Rifampin and Trimethoprim for the Prevention of Catheter-related Infections

1998

So-called antiinfective catheters which are generated by incorporation of antimicrobial substances into polymers appear to be effectful devices in the prevention of catheter related infections. Such devices mainly act by prevention of bacterial colonization of the catheter surface rather than by inhibition of adherence. In a preceding study, we developed a rifampin-containing silicone catheter for the prevention of ventricular shunt infection. In the present study, this work was continued with a combination of antimicrobials incorporated in silicone ventricular catheters to reduce the risk of rifampin resistance and to expand the antimicrobial spectrum. We found that the drug release kineti…

Commensal Staphylococcus isolates from the nasal cavity of community older adults in Valencia (Spain) and their resistance to methicillin and other a…

2019

Composition influence on pulmonary delivery of rifampicin liposomes.

2012

The effects of lipid concentration and composition on the physicochemical properties, aerosol performance and in vitro toxicity activity of several rifampicin-loaded liposomes were investigated. To this purpose, six liposome formulations containing different amounts of soy phosphatidylcholine and hydrogenated soy phosphatidylcholine, with and without cholesterol and oleic acid, were prepared and fully characterized. Uni- or oligo-lamellar, small (~100 nm), negatively charged (~60 mV) vesicles were obtained. Lipid composition affected aerosol delivery features of liposomal rifampicin; in particular, the highest phospholipid concentration led to a better packing of the vesic…

Gut Microbiota Cannot Compensate the Impact of (quasi) Aposymbiosis in Blattella germanica

2021

Simple Summary The German cockroach Blattella germanica is a good model to study complex symbiotic relationships because the following two symbiotic systems coexist in a single individual: the endosymbiont Blattabacterium (living inside specialized cells called bacteriocytes) and the gut microbiota. Although the role of the endosymbiont has been fully elucidated, the function of the gut microbiota remains unclear. The study of the gut microbiota will benefit from the availability of insects deprived of Blattabacterium. Our goal is to determine the effect of the removal (or, at least, the reduction) of the endosymbiont population on the cockroach’s fitness, in a normal gut microbiota communi…
