La kalimera di Lazzaro: Varianti testuali siculo-arbëreshe

2018

This kalimera forms part of an ancient pagan rite of agricultural fertility, which due to syncretism is conserved in the paraliturgical practices still existing in the Arbëresh communities in southern Italy.Belonging to the cycle of commemoration of the dead, Lazarus’ Saturday is the second of the four Saturdays (the first is that of the carnival – in Alb. E shtuna e shpirtravet), during which participants sing the ballad of Constantine and Doruntina; the second Saturday, as mentioned, is that of the Resurrection of Lazarus, featuring liturgical hymns known as the hymns of the Holy Week; the third is the Saturday on the Easter’s Eve when the bells were untied; the fourth Saturday is that of…

Mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH-2)--maker of and marker for nitrate tolerance in response to nitroglycerin treatment.

2008

The hemodynamic and anti-ischemic effects of nitroglycerin (GTN) are rapidly blunted as a result of the development of nitrate tolerance. Long-term nitrate treatment also is associated with decreased vascular responsiveness caused by changes in intrinsic mechanisms of the tolerant vasculature itself. According to the oxidative stress concept, increased vascular superoxide and peroxynitrite production as well as an increased sensitivity to vasoconstrictors secondary to activation of protein kinase C as well as vascular NADPH oxidases contribute to the development of tolerance. Recent experimental work has defined new tolerance mechanisms, including inhibition of the enzyme that bioactivates …

High-Pressure Phase Diagram and Superionicity of Alkaline Earth Metal Difluorides

2018

We study the high-pressure–high-temperature phase diagram and superionicity of alkaline earth metal (AEM) difluorides (AF2, A = Ca, Sr, Ba) with first-principles simulation methods. We find that the superionic behavior of SrF2 and BaF2 at high pressures differ appreciably from that previously reported for CaF2 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 2014, 113, 235902]. Specifically, the critical superionic temperature of SrF2 and BaF2 in the low-pressure cubic fluorite phase is not reduced by effect of compression, and the corresponding high-pressure orthorhombic contunnite phases become superionic at elevated temperatures. We get valuable microscopic insights into the superionic features of AEM difluorides in b…

Determination of nitrite by inhibition of the chemiluminescence of acriflavine in a flow-injection assembly

2001

The indirect determination of nitrite was performed with a flow-injection assembly on the basis of the inhibition of the analytical output obtained in a luminometer by oxidation of acriflavine. The acriflavine solution merged with the nitrite and the resulting mixture was injected into a pure water stream. This solution merged with the oxidant solution (potassium permanganate in sulfuric acid medium) and the resulting chemiluminiscence was affected (inhibited) by the presence of nitrite after reaction with the aminoacridine. The method was applicable over the range 10–800 μg l−1 of nitrite with a correlation coefficient of 0.9960. The relative standard deviation was 1.4% and the throughput …

Triterpene saponins from the roots ofAmpelozizyphus amazonicus

1992

A new triterpene saponin was isolated from the roots of Ampelozizyphus amazonicus together with the known 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-20-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyljujubogenin and the known triterpenes melaleucic acid, 3 beta,27 alpha-dihydroxylup-20(29)-en-28 beta-oic acid, betulinic acid, betulin, lupeol. The structure of this saponin was elucidated as 3-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl(1----2)alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl]- 20-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyljujubogenin by spectral analysis and chemical transformations.

Negative staining across holes: application to fibril and tubular structures.

2007

The negative staining technique, when used with holey carbon support films, presents superior imaging conditions than is the case when samples are adsorbed to continuous carbon films. A demonstration of this negative staining approach is presented, using ammonium molybdate in combination with trehalose, applied to several fibrillar and tubular samples. Fibrils formed from the amyloid-beta peptide and the protease inhibitor pepstain A spread very well unsupported across holes and the different polymorphic fibril forms can be readily assessed. However, tubular forms of amyloid-beta have a tendency to be flattened, due to surface tension forces prior to and during specimen drying. Sub-fibril a…

Anaerobic respiration of Bacillus macerans with fumarate, TMAO, nitrate and nitrite and regulation of the pathways by oxygen and nitrate

1995

In Bacillus macerans, anaerobic respiratory pathways and the regulation of facultatively anaerobic catabolism by electron acceptors were analysed. In addition to fermentative growth, B. macerans was able to grow anaerobically by fumarate, trimethylamine N-oxide, nitrate, and nitrite respiration with glycerol as donor. During growth by fumarate respiration, a membrane-bound fumarate reductase was present that was different from succinate dehydrogenase. The end product of nitrate and nitrite respiration was ammonia. No N2 or NO and only traces of N2O could be detected. O2 repressed the activity of nitrate and fumarate reductases and the fermentation of glucose, presumably at the transcription…

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of flavonoid and saponin fractions from Zizyphus lotus (L.) Lam.

2008

Abstract The effect of the flavonoid and saponin fractions from the leaves and root bark of Zizyphus lotus (200 mg/kg) was evaluated on carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats and on acetic acid-induced algesia in mice. In addition, two methanolic extracts from the plant (1 mg/ear) were tested on oxazolone-induced contact-delayed hypersensitivity (DTH) in mice. The effect of the different fractions was also evaluated in vitro on the nitrite production induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in RAW 264.7 macrophages. The results showed that both the flavonoid and saponin fractions significantly inhibited paw edema, algesia, and nitrite production without affecting cell viability. Furthermore, the …
