Wh-Relative Clauses and Left Periphery from Latin to some Romance Languages
2011
The paper is organized as follows: after an introduction of the issue we will examine, in the first section we shall discuss the theory of the antisymmetry of syntax as specifically concerns relative clauses, evidencing also problems linked to the application of this theory to the syntax of relative clauses in Latin and in other Indo-European languages; the second section will present our first attempt at some analysis of the left periphery of the Proto-Indo-European sentence; in the third section we shall discuss the categorial status of the relative pronoun in Latin and we shall produce a model of the left periphery of the Latin subordinate clause, supplying examples taken from literary a…
Poliolefiny a środowisko
2002
Przedstawiono znaczenie, rozwój metod otrzymywania, kierunki zastosowania i perspektywy rozwoju poliolefin (polietylenu i polipropylenu), materiałów dominujących w światowej produkcji i zużyciu tworzyw sztucznych.
2017
„Memory turn” in the humanities allows to approach old problems from a new perspective. The author argues that the sphere of complicated Russian-Polish relations should be presented as a conflict between two distinct collective memories. The author considers “memory” as strictly interconnected with so called “non-memory” (i.e. as set of facts not related to memory or superseded by it). In principle, collective memory / non-memory can be subjected to linguistic analysis because it is verbalized and therefore it has its different verbal exponents. The author refers back to his concept of “mental geography” developed 20 years ago and argues that a multi-stage process of mapping two national me…
Design principles for collaboration platforms for open education
2015
Increasing the current low uptake of Open Education Resources (OER) is a key challenge for researchers and practitioners in the field. User studies have shown that collaboration is a main success factor for successful open educational activities. However, effective collaboration in open educational contexts requires well planned processes and platforms supporting collaboration, in particular in physically distributed settings. We have been investigating the value of such platforms, their main features and user requirements to enable collaboration from immature ideas to completed resources. We used quantitative and qualitative research methods to collect insights from potential users of such…
How Do Mobile ICTs Enable Organizational Fluidity: Toward a Theoretical Framework
2017
Abstract The focus of this theoretical paper is to investigate how mobile information and communication technologies (ICTs) give rise to the notion of organizational fluidity. Drawing upon previous literature, five affordances of mobile ICTs − mobility, connectedness, interoperability, identifiability, and personalization − are discussed. Delving into the concept of organizational fluidity, the paper captures three dimensions of organizational fluidity, namely, team fluidity, task fluidity, and control fluidity. The paper then develops propositions on how different combinations of the mobile ICT affordances influence each of the dimensions of organizational fluidity. The contributions and i…
Reduced Order Models for Pricing European and American Options under Stochastic Volatility and Jump-Diffusion Models
2017
Abstract European options can be priced by solving parabolic partial(-integro) differential equations under stochastic volatility and jump-diffusion models like the Heston, Merton, and Bates models. American option prices can be obtained by solving linear complementary problems (LCPs) with the same operators. A finite difference discretization leads to a so-called full order model (FOM). Reduced order models (ROMs) are derived employing proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). The early exercise constraint of American options is enforced by a penalty on subset of grid points. The presented numerical experiments demonstrate that pricing with ROMs can be orders of magnitude faster within a give…
Biased graph walks for RDF graph embeddings
2017
Knowledge Graphs have been recognized as a valuable source for background information in many data mining, information retrieval, natural language processing, and knowledge extraction tasks. However, obtaining a suitable feature vector representation from RDF graphs is a challenging task. In this paper, we extend the RDF2Vec approach, which leverages language modeling techniques for unsupervised feature extraction from sequences of entities. We generate sequences by exploiting local information from graph substructures, harvested by graph walks, and learn latent numerical representations of entities in RDF graphs. We extend the way we compute feature vector representations by comparing twel…

Adsorption and Activation of Water on Cuboctahedral Rhodium and Platinum Nanoparticles
2017
Rh and Pt are widely used as the components in heterogeneous catalysts for multiple industrial applications. Because the metals are typically in the form of nanoparticles in real catalysts, it is important to carefully select models for the computational prediction of the catalytic properties. Here we report a first-principles study on the water activation, an important step in numerous catalytic reactions, using the finite-size Rh and Pt nanoparticle models and compare them to the extended surface models. We show that regardless of the model, adsorption and activation of water is practically identical for both metals, whereas the dissociation is energetically more favorable on Rh. The expe…
