Experimental autoimmune hepatitis: Disease induction, time course and t-cell reactivity

1990

This study describes a murine model of autoimmune hepatitis: experimental autoimmune hepatitis. Experimental autoimmune hepatitis could be induced most effectively in male C57BL/6 mice by intraperitoneal immunization with the 100,000 g supernatant of syngeneic liver homogenate (S-100) in complete Freund's adjuvant. BALB/C and C3H mice were less susceptible than C57BL/6 mice. Experimental autoimmune hepatitis could not be induced in Lewis rats. Intraperitoneal immunization was more effective than intramuscular or subcutaneous injections, and the amount of protein administered above a threshold was of little influence. A single intraperitoneal injection of S-100 in complete Freund's adjuvant …

Strongyloidiasis in northern Vietnam: epidemiology, clinical characteristics and molecular diagnosis of the causal agent.

2019

Abstract Background Strongyloidiasis is a health problem in Vietnam, but appropriate information is still limited. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, geographical distribution, epidemiological aspects, symptoms and other health indicators of Strongyloides stercoralis infections in patients from 27 provinces of northern Vietnam attending the Hanoi Medical University Hospital during 2016 and 2017. Methods Blood samples of 2000 patients were analyzed for S. stercoralis infection with an IgG ELISA test. Seroprevalence was analyzed by gender, age group, locality of origin (rural or urban areas) and symptoms. Stools from the seropositive patients were examined for the detectio…

Case report: Noonan syndrome with multiple giant cell lesions and review of the literature.

2012

Noonan syndrome with multiple giant cell lesions (NS/MGCL) was recently shown to be a phenotypic variation within the syndromes of the Ras/MAPK pathway and not an independent entity as previously thought. Here we report on a 13-year-old boy with a typical phenotype of NS including atrial septal defect, pulmonic stenosis, short stature, and combined pectus carinatum/excavatum, pronounced MGCL of both jaws, and a de novo mutation in PTPN11, c.236A>G (which predicts p.Q79R). Mutations in PTPN11 are the most frequent cause of NS and p.Q79R is a recurrent mutation in exon 3. Including this patient, 24 patients with molecularly confirmed NS, LEOPARD, or CFC/MGCL syndrome have been reported to dat…

Infrequent co-existence of nitric oxide synthase and parvalbumin, calbindin and calretinin immunoreactivity in rat pontine neurons.

1995

Neurons in the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (LDTg), ventrolateral dorsal tegmental nucleus (LDTgV), pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus (PPTg), lateral and medial parabrachial nuclei (LPB and MPB) were immunoreactive to brain nitric oxide synthase (NOS) or isoform I. Double-labeling experiments showed that very few NOS-containing neurons in the pons were immunoreactive to any of the three calcium-binding proteins: calbindin-D 28K (CB-IR), parvalbumin (PV-IR) and calretinin (CR-IR). These findings extend our previous observation in the neocortex and suggest that a population of central NOS-containing neurons can be neurochemically characterized as CB/CR/PV deficient.

Reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome in a patient with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura

2011

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is an autoimmune disorder characterised by fever, microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia, renal insufficiency, and thrombocytopenia. Neurological involvement, a prominent component of TTP, is characterised by a variety of brain lesions which include reversible cerebral oedema or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome (RPLS). TTP is frequently associated with deficiency of the von Willebrand factor-cleaving protease, ADAMTS13.Here, we report a case of TTP with severe acute encephalopathy. Posterior leukoencephalopathy and brainstem oedema with triventricular hydrocephalus were observed on MRI. The …

Influence of Inter- and Intra-Batch Variability on the Sample Size Required for Demonstration of Equivalent Microstructure of Semisolid Dosage Forms

2020

Inter- and intra-batch variability of the quality attributes contribute to the uncertainty for demonstrating equivalent microstructure of post-approval changes and generic/hybrids of semisolid topical products. Selecting a representative sample size to describe accurately the in vitro properties of semisolids and to reach enough statistical power to demonstrate similarity between two semisolid topical products is currently challenging. The objective of this work is to establish the number of batches and units per batch to be compared based on different inter-batch and intra-batch variability to demonstrate equivalence in the physical characteristics of the products that ensure a similar mic…

Dielectric spectroscopy as a potential technique for prediction of kiwifruit quality indices during storage

2019

Dielectric spectroscopy has been employed as a simple, low cost and a non-destructive way for prediction of some physicochemical indices of kiwifruit during storage. A parallel-plate capacitor was developed and supplied with sinusoidal voltage waves within a frequency range of 40 kHz – 20 MHz. Dielectric properties of samples were measured by the dielectric sensor. Additionally, changes associated with fruit ripening properties, including firmness, total soluble solid (TSS) and pH were determined as a function of time at 2 °C. The results showed that storage time significantly affected the quality characteristics of kiwifruit. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) were employed to develop model…

Oil whip-induced wear in journal bearings

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00170-014-5805-8 This paper investigates the effect of oil whirl and oil whip in fluid film radial bearings due to possible metallic contact. The degree of metallic contact and thereby wear and tear between rotating shafts and bearing bushes is assessed by measuring electric currents through the oil film. The current as well as the voltage varied in accordance with the contact ratio between the shaft and bush in the fluid film radial bearing. The gauge signal thus indicates the degree of metallic contact based on the thi…

Densely PEGylated polybenzofulvene brushes for potential applications in drug encapsulation

2018

The technique of grafting side chains onto a linear polymeric backbone is commonly used to confer to the new polymeric material with desired properties, such as tunable solubility, ionic charge, biocompatibility, or specific interactions with biological systems. In this paper, two new polybenzofulvene backbones were assembled by spontaneous polymerization of the appropriate benzofulvene monomers (4,6-PO-BF3k and 4&rsquo

Performance Enhancement of Alkaline Water Electrolyzer Using Nanostructured Electrodes Synthetized by Template Electrosynthesis

2018

The increase of power generation by renewable sources is causing problems in the management of the electricity grid. In order to favor the transition from the current energy production towards renewable energy sources, it is necessary to plan strategy to develop suitable energy storage systems. Certainly, the electrochemical hydrogen production can be considered as one of the most promising storage technologies. In this work, an innovative alkaline electrolyzer is presented from its design based on the use of nanostructured electrodes up to its implementation suggested by the results of tests simulating real operation. The nanostructured electrodes were fabricated by template electrosynthes…
