In recent years, epitopes of various origin have been inserted into the core protein of hepatitis B virus (HBc), allowing the formation of chimeric HBc particles. Although the C-terminus of a C-terminally truncated HBc (HBcΔ) tolerates the insertion of extended foreign sequences, the insertion capacity is still a limiting factor for the construction of multivalent vaccines. ABSTRACT Sequences in the 5′ and 3′ termini of plus-strand RNA viruses harbor cis -acting elements important for efficient translation and replication. In case of the hepatitis C virus (HCV), a plus-strand RNA virus of the family Flaviviridae , a 341-nucleotide-long nontranslated region (NTR) is located at the 5′ end of the genome. Persistent infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major cause of chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. All treatments known so far rely on the antiviral activity of interferon alfa (IFN-alpha) that is given alone or in combination with ribavirin. Unfortunately, only a fraction of the patients clear the virus during therapy and for those who do not respond there is currently no alternative treatment. AbstractHuman cytomegalovirus (HCMV) encodes four glycoproteins, termed gpUS2, gpUS3, gpUS6 and gpUS11 that interfere with MHC class I biosynthesis and antigen presentation. Despite gpUS2–11 expression, however, HCMV infection is efficiently controlled by cytolytic CD8 T lymphocytes (CTL). To address the role of gpUS2 and gpUS11 in antigen presentation during viral infection, HCMV mutants were generated that expressed either gpUS2 or gpUS11 alone without coexpression of the three other proteins. Structural and spectroscopic characterisation of 2-(2'-hydroxybenzoyl)pyrrole and its O-methyl derivative

Abstract Density functional theory calculations on the tautomeric and conformational equilibria of 2-(2′-hydroxybenzoyl)pyrrole (HBP) and 2-(2′-methoxybenzoyl)pyrrole (MBP) were performed. Moreover, the experimental IR and UV spectra of the same compounds were recorded and compared with the theoretical data. The presence of an intramolecular hydrogen bond in HBP can be related to the biological activities of some of its derivatives.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms near the Ink4/Arf locus have been associated with type-2 diabetes mellitus. Previous studies indicate a protective role of the locus in the carbohydrate metabolism derangement associated with ageing in wild-type mice. The present study demonstrates that the increased Ink4/Arf locus expression in 1-year-old mice, partially-deficient for the insulin receptor substrate (IRS)2 (Irs2 +/-SuperInk4/Arf mice) ameliorates hepatic steatosis, inflammation and insulin resistance.
