Quantitative Proteome and Phosphoproteome Profiling in Magnaporthe oryzae

2021

The quality and consistency in every sample preparation procedure is crucial for any scientific output. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to have easy, economic, and robust sample preparation protocols. Here, we describe a simple and robust bottom-up proteomic sample preparation strategy for identification and label-free quantification (LFQ) of proteins and phosphoproteins. The presented workflow is designed for large-scale application and involves easy scalable and well-known robust sample preparation techniques, such as cell lysis with SDS buffer under heat, protein precipitation using methanol/chloroform, tryptic digest, and commercially available TiO2 phosphopeptide enrichment kits.…

Globalization and Female Labor Force Participation in Developing Countries: An Empirical (Re-)Assessment

2017

We investigate the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) and trade, as two measures of globalization, on female labor force participation rate in a sample of 80 developing countries over the time period 1980–2005. Contrary to the mainstream view in the literature, which is mainly based on country-case studies or simple cross-country variation, we find that both, FDI and trade have a generally negative impact on female labor force participation. While the impact is of negligible economic size, it is stronger for younger cohorts, possibly reflecting a higher return to education in open economies. We further find a large degree of cross-regional heterogeneity and that the effect of globali…

The public–private sector wage gap in Latvia

2018

This study investigates the public-private sector wage gap in Latvia using microdata from the labour force survey. The severity of public sector wage cuts employed as a response to the economic crisis and subsequent recovery provides a test bed to analyse whether and how the public-private sector wage gap has adjusted after consolidation-driven wage cuts. Findings reveal that the observed wage gap is slightly in favour of the public sector; however, once differences in individual characteristics and selection effects are considered, results point to a private sector wage premium. Findings also suggest that the private sector wage premium has increased since the pre-crisis period. A signific…

Unobserved Heterogeneity in Overeducation Models: Is Personality More Important than Ability?

2013

This paper compares the performance of selected personality aspects and ability on explaining the overeducation status of the individual. Ability is defined as the difference between the actual and the predicted income. Personality proves to be an important factor affecting the risk of overeducation. For females, personality allows to better explain mismatch than ability. For males, ability frequently, but not always, performs better than personality. Controlling for personality allows for better classification of the non-overeducated, while controlling for ability improves the classification of the overeducated. The study is done on the pooled sample of 23 European countries, as well as fo…

The Relationship Between Overeducation and Job Satisfaction Among Young Spanish Workers: The Role of Salary, Contract of Employment, and Work Experie…

2010

The increase of education in younger generations and the relative scarcity of qualified jobs available for them makes overeducation of young employees a social issue. We explored the relationships between overeducation and job satisfaction (extrinsic, intrinsic, social facet), as well as the direct and moderating role of salary, contract of employment, and work experience in these relationships using hierarchical regression analyses. Data were collected from a sample of 643 young Spanish employees. As expected, there were negative relationships between overeducation and all 3 satisfaction facets. Moreover, high work experience emerged as a moderating factor that buffered the negative effect…

Endotoxins in ophthalmic viscosurgical devices.

2003

Purpose To measure the endotoxin concentration (EC) of 25 commercially available, hyaluronic acid- and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose-based (HPMC) ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVDs). Methods The in vitro Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) assay, which indicates the presence of endotoxins originating from gram-negative bacteria, was used to determine the EC. The procedure was performed according to the European Pharmacopoeia/USP. EC including duplicate determinations, negative controls, dilution series with control standard endotoxin, dilution series with sample extract and positive sample control. Results 16 OVDs (Amvisc®, Amvisc® Plus, Biolon®, Coatel®, Healon®, Healon® GV, Healon®5, HPMC O…

Identification of major histocompatibility complex class II-associated peptides derived from freshly prepared rat Langerhans cells using MALDI-PSD an…

2000

The isolation and identification is described of MHC class II-bound peptides derived from Langerhans cells. A combination of preparative micro-HPLC, MALDI-MS, Edman degradation was used for determining the amino acid sequence of MHC-associated peptides. Sample handling was crucial because fractions containing trace amounts of material require immediate storage at −80 °C to prevent peptide losses.

Sorption of copper(II) ions in the biomass of alga Spirogyra sp.

2012

Abstract Sorption of copper ions by the alga Spirogyra sp. was investigated to determine the influence of experimental conditions and the methods of sample preparation on the process. The experiments were carried out both under the static and the dynamic conditions. Kinetics and equilibrium parameters of the sorption were evaluated. In addition, the influence was studied of the algae preparation methods on the conductivity of demineralized water in which the algae samples were immersed. The static experiments showed that the sorption of Cu2+ ions reached equilibrium in about 30 min, with approximately 90% of the ions adsorbed in the initial 15 min. The sorption capacity determined from the …

The ROSAT-ESO Flux Limited X-ray (REFLEX) Galaxy Cluster Survey. V. The cluster catalogue

2004

We present the catalogue of the REFLEX Cluster Survey providing information on the X-ray properties, redshifts, and some identification details of the clusters in the REFLEX sample. The catalogue describes a statistically complete X-ray flux-limited sample of 447 galaxy clusters above an X-ray flux of 3 10(-12) erg /s/cm**2 (0.1 to 2.4 keV) in an area of 4.24 ster in the southern sky. The cluster candidates were first selected by their X-ray emission in the ROSAT-All Sky Survey and subsequently spectroscopically identified in the frame of an ESO key programme. In addition to the cluster catalogue we also describe the complete selection criteria as a function of the sky position and the conv…
